In the state of Veracruz, Mexico, around 22000 ha of rice are sown annually; the average of yield is about 3.5 t/ha and it is mainly due to drought problems, which favours the presence of the fungi Pyricularia oryzae Cav. (rice blast) and Cercospora oryzae Miyake (narrow spot). In order to know the behavior of new fungicides, the effectiveness of Azoxystrobin on the control of these fungi was evaluated. The experiment was established in the municipality of Tres Valles, Veracruz, at the beginning of the 1999 rainy season. Seed of the rice variety Milagro Filipino Depurado was used. The experimental design was a Randomized Complete Block design with four replications. The evaluated treatments were: Azoxystrobin at 0.2, 0.4 and 0.6 l/ha vs Tecto60 at 0.5 kg/ha and a non-treated control. These treatments were applied when the first symptoms of rice blast and/or narrow spot were noticed. Factors being evaluate were: incidence, number of lesions in 20 plants, intensity index, phytotoxicity and grain yield. Azoxystrobin controlled both diseases better than Tecto 60; on the other hand, rice plants treated with Tecto 60 had significantly less lesions than the non-treated plants. The best control of P. oryzae and C. oryzae and the highest grain yield (4432 kg/ha) were obtained when Azoxystrobin was applied at 0.6 l/ha, although a good control of both diseases was also attained at 0.2 and 0.4 l/ha. None of the fungicides caused toxicity to rice.

An experiment was carried out in the Entomology Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh to determine the efficacy of six botanicals and four chemical insecticides for controlling rice hispa, Dicladispa armigera during the period of July to December 2013. In conducting the experiment BR11 rice variety was selected where ten treatments namely six botanicals such as Neem oil, Mahogany oil, Mixture of Neem and Mahogany oil, Bishkatali leaf extract, Pitraj leaf extract and Mixture of Bishkatali and Pitraj leaf extract and four chemical insecticides Sevin85SP, Advantage20EC, Cup50EC, Kinalux 25EC  were laid out in the Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). Overall leaf infestation by rice hispa and infestation by adults and grubs separately were recorded at different time intervals. In addition to these, overall effect of pest infestation on the grain yield of rice was also examined. Among the six botanicals, Neem oil was most effective in controlling rice hispa, as overall leaf infestation was 21.20% and the infestation by adults and grubs were 14.43% and12.57%. On the other hand, among chemical insecticides, maximum efficacy was found under the treatment of Sevin 85SP where minimum leaf infestation was 9.22%, infestation by adults and grubs were 5.88% and 5.00% respectively. In case of yield, Sevin 85SP (4.62 ton/ha) showed the best efficacy in comparison to other treatments. Therefore, application of Sevin 85SP (3.46ml/L) and Neem oil (2ml/100ml) were examined as the best options in controlling rice hispa. So, it could be recommended to use Sevin 85 SP and Neem oil for the management of rice hispa.Progressive Agriculture 28 (2): 64-72, 2017

A field experiment was conducted at the Agrotechnology Field Laboratory of Khulna University during the boro season to evaluate the effect of planting density on the performance of rice variety BRRI dhan28. The experiment received twelve treatments, which were divided into two distinct patterns - single row and paired row. The single row had four treatments and paired row had eight treatments. Planting densities were 40, 27, 20 and 16 hills m-2. The experiment was arranged in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Standard management practices were followed in raising crops. Results revealed that closer spacing produced higher yields where 40 hills m-2 produced the most (4.81 t ha-1), which was statistically similar with that of 27 hills   m-2. Paired row planting showed better performance than single row planting. Plant height, grains panicle-1, sterile spikelets panicle-1, 1000-grain weight, grain yield were found better in paired row planting. Paired row planting at a spacing of (35 cm + 15 cm) × 10 cm  i.e row to row distance is 35 cm & 15 cm and hill to hill distance is 10 cm; found the highest grain yield (4.81 t ha-1) and the lowest yield (2.97 t ha-1) was found in single row using a spacing of 25 cm × 25 cm.Bangladesh Agron. Evaluation of different fungicides against rice blast was carried out in research plot of the Agronomy farm of IAAS, Prithu Technical College, Lamahi Municpality, Dang district of the Lumbini Province, inner terai region of Nepal during June to November, 2017. The objective of the experiment was to evaluate the efficiency of different chemical fungicides against rice blast. The experiment was conducted in Randomized Complete Block Design with the use of susceptible variety ‘Mansuli’. Different fungicides like Hexaconazole 5% SC (Udaan), Propiconazole 25% EC (Tilt), Captan 70% + Hexaconazole 5% WP, Validamycin 3% L, Tricyclazole 75% WP (TRIP) and Biomycin (Kasugamycin 3% S.L.) were applied five times at weekly interval with the doses of 2mL/L of H2O, 1.5mL/L of H2O, 2g/L of H2O, 2mL/L of H2O, 2g/L of H2O and 2mL/L of H2O respectively. From the result, it was concluded that all the fungicides were effective in controlling leaf blast but Tricyclazole 75% WP (TRIP) was more effective among other fungicides and untreated control plots with least leaf blast severity (27.85%), least incidence (35.5%), least mean AUDPC (64.64%) and highest grain yield (3.93 t ha-1) followed by Biomycin. It is thus concluded that fungicide Tricyclazole 75% WP should be sprayed five times at weekly interval for the management of leaf blast in rice.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the behavior of forage sorghum when intercropped with piatã grass and cultivated in eucalyptus sub-forest. The experiment was carried out at the Embrapa Gado de Corte, in Campo Grande - MS. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design with three replications. The main treatments were: monoculture (single sorghum); intercropping (simultaneous sowing of sorghum + piatã grass). The secondary treatments were composed by the sampling sites, with five sites equidistant between the rows of eucalyptus trees (CLFI), with full sun as a control (CLI). The percentage of shading was always higher than 30% in the sub-forest, and the overall average of the system with 63% shade, even after 50% thinning of eucalyptus trees. The intercropping with the grass, an interesting fact, did not affect sorghum grain yield, since it validates the potential of forage sorghum for use in intercropping with perennial grasses, with average grain yield of 2,404.63 kg ha-1. Regarding the sampling sites, it was observed a higher yield in the full sun with 3,283 kg ha-1. The weight of 100 grains was higher for sorghum in monoculture. On the other hand, the upper W1000 was observed at sites A and C. The weight of 1000 grains is considered stable, being affected only under conditions of stress during grain formation. The sorghum intercropped with the piatã grass did not influence the harvest index (HI), while in the shaded environment there was an increase in the harvest index in relation to the full sun.

The emergence of biodegradable pesticides as safe option has reduced the problems that result from the use of synthetic insecticides, thus creating a renewed interest in their development and use in integrated pest management of crops. The objective of this study was to investigate the insecticidal properties of the chloroform (CETC), ethanol (EETC), petroleum ether (PEETC) and ethyl acetate (EAETC) extracts of Tinospora crispa on small mottled millow moth (Spodoptera exigua) infesting spinach (Spinacia oleracea). The stem of the plants used in the experiment were collected from the locality, washed, shade dried, grind into powder and exhaustively extracted with four different solvents; starting with petroleum ether, followed by chloroform, ethanol, and ethyl acetate. A commercial pesticide, Cyperin (CCP) was included in the treatments as a standard check alongside the untreated (control). The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with six treatments and four replicates. The efficacy of the treatments was based on reduction in Spodoptera exigua and percentage reduction in population of the pests. The results showed that EETC and PEETC significantly (p < 0.05) reduced the population of Spodoptera exigua at 61.2% and 51.6% respectively. Though the other two; CETC and EAETC were not significant in reducing the population of the pests, they were better than the control. All the extracts of Tinospora crispa tested were not as effective as the commercial pesticide, Cyperin, CCP (91.5%) in reducing Spodoptera exigua population. Among the tested extracts, EETC was found to be more effective, hence its use by resource poor farmers is recommended in the protection of Spinacia oleracea against the infestation of Spodoptera exigua.

The experiment was carried out during the period from January to May, 2018 at Professor Purnendu Gain Field Laboratory of Agrotechnology Discipline, Khulna University to evaluate the effect of phosphorous (P) on yield and yield attributes of BRRI dhan28. The experiment was consisted of seven P doses viz. T0 = without phosphorus (P), T1 = 9 kg P ha-1, T2 = 12 kg P ha-1, T3 = 15 kg P ha-1, T4 = 18 kg P ha-1, T5 = 21 kg P ha-1 and T6 = 24 kg P ha-1 as treatments. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Only the grain yield and biological yield showed significant variations due to the effect of different rates of phosphorous. Others growth and yield attributes varied insignificantly. The result of this experiment showed that the highest grain yield (3.82 t ha-1) and biological yield (10.87 t ha-1) was obtained from 21 kg P ha-1 (T5). There was an increasing trend of grain yield with the increase of phosphorous level up to 21 kg P ha-1 and then it declined. From the result of this experiment it could be revealed that 21 kg P ha-1 gives better result regarding grain yield of HYV rice variety BRRI dhan28 at Batiaghta upazila of southwestern Bangladesh. The objective of this experiment was to estimate the magnitude of genotype X environment interaction on grain yield and yield related traits. Twelve varieties of food barley were included in the study planted in randomized complete block design with three replications. The ANOVA of combined and individual location revealed significant differences among the food barley genotypes for grain yield and other traits. The results of ANOVA for grain yield showed highly significant (p≤0.01) differences among genotypes evaluated for grain yield at Maychew and significant (p≤0.05) differences in Korem, Alage and Mugulat. The ANOVA over locations showed a highly significant (p≤0.01) variation for the genotype effect, environment effects, genotype X environment interaction (GEI) effect and significant (p≤0.05) variation for GEI effect of yield and for most of the yield related traits of food barley genotypes. Haftysene, Yidogit, Estayish and Basso were the genotypes with relatively high mean grain yield across all locations and they are highly performing genotypes to the area. Among locations, the highest mean grain yield was recorded at Korem and it was a suited environment to all the genotypes whereas Mugulat is unfavoured one.
