The development of an efficient procedure for 3d modeling and finite element simulation of metal foams is one of the greatest challenges for engineer researchers nowadays. Creating 3d CAD model is alone a demanding engineering task due to its extremely complex geometry, and the proper finite element analysis process is still in the center of the research. The increasingly widespread application of the metal foams, e.g. in vehicle and medical industry, requires this knowledge in the design phase. A closed-cell metal foam is studied using different analyzing methods where the aim is to collect information about the composition and geometry (structure) that is satisfactory for the later research. Using statistical methods microscopic, X-ray and surface analyzing studies on the specimens produced according to the concerning standard are evaluated. The main goal of this part of the project is to obtain structural information and to determine the homogeneity or the in-homogeneity property of the metal foam specimens taken from different locations.

Abstract The finite element method, which is a numerical discretization technique for obtaining approximate solutions to complex physical problems, is accepted in many industries as the primary tool for structural analysis. Computer graphics is an essential ingredient of the finite element analysis process. The use of interactive graphics techniques for analysis of tires is discussed in this presentation. The features and capabilities of the program used for pre- and post-processing for finite element analysis at GenCorp are included.

AbstractThis work presents a regularized eigenstrain formulation around the slip plane of dislocations and the resultant non-singular solutions for various dislocation configurations. Moreover, we derive the generalized Eshelby stress tensor of the configurational force theory in the context of the proposed dislocation model. Based on the non-singular finite element solutions and the generalized configurational force formulation, we calculate the driving force on dislocations of various configurations, including single edge/screw dislocation, dislocation loop, interaction between a vacancy dislocation loop and an edge dislocation, as well as a dislocation cluster. The non-singular solutions and the driving force results are well benchmarked for different cases. The proposed formulation and the numerical scheme can be applied to any general dislocation configuration with complex geometry and loading conditions.

The interaction between adjacent asperities is a typical characteristic of the grinding process and plays an important role in the material removal mechanism. Therefore, in order to systematically investigate the formation mechanism of the subsurface damage, a precision grinding contact model between the diamond particle and optical glass with adjacent asperities is proposed in our research. The initiation and propagation mechanism of median/lateral cracks under residual stress, the propagation rules of the stress waves on the subsurface, and the interaction between the subsurface damage under stress superposition effect are fully investigated by a theoretical analysis and finite element simulation. The simulation results of the precision grinding model are verified by experiments, which show that the proposed numerical analysis model is reasonable and the finite element analysis process is feasible.

This study focuses on the thermal analysis and comparing a lattice model and an optimized model of open-cell metal foams manufactured thanks to a metal casting process. The topological optimization defines the complex geometry through thermal criteria and a plaster mold reproduces it in 3D printing to be used in casting. The study of the thermal behavior conducted on the two open foam metal structures is performed based on several measurements, as well as numerical simulations. It is observed that the optimized metal foam presented less and non-homogenous local temperature than the lattice model with the gap of about 10 °C between both models. The pore size and porosity significantly affect the heat transfer through the metal foam. The comparison between numerical simulations and experimental results regarding the temperature fields shows a good agreement allowing the validation of the developed three-dimensional model based on the finite element method.

Woven polymer matrix composites (PMCs) are leveraged in aerospace applications for their desirable specific properties, yet they are vulnerable to high residual stresses during manufacturing and their complex geometry makes experimental results difficult to observe. Process modeling is needed to characterize the effects of the curing and predict end stress states. Finite element software can be used to model woven architectures, however accurate representation of processing conditions remains a challenge when it comes to selecting boundary conditions. The effect of BCs on process-induced stress within woven PMCs is studied. The commercial Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software Abaqus is coupled with user-written subroutines in a process modeling framework. A two-dimensionally (2D) woven PMC repeating unit cell (RUC) is modeled with TexGen and Abaqus. Virtual curing is imposed on the bulk matrix. The BC study is conducted with Free, Periodic, Flat, and Flat-Free configurations. Results show that the end stress state is sensitive to the boundary condition assumptions. Flat BC results show great agreement with Periodic BCs. Residual stress results from process modeling are then compared with a linear-elastic thermal cooldown analysis in Abaqus. Cooldown results indicate an overestimation in matrix stresses compared with process modeling.

Dynamic response of ALPORAS aluminium foam has been investigated experimentally and numerically. The dynamic response is quantified by the force produced as the foam deforms as a function of time. Quasi-static tests are conducted to determine the quasi-static properties of the foam. In the impact test, the aluminium foams are fired towards a rigid load-cell and the force signals developed are recorded. Experimental dynamic stress is also compared with theoretical prediction using existing theory. Finite element model is constructed using LS-DYNA to simulate the impact test. Results from the experiment, finite element analysis and theoretical prediction are in acceptable agreement. Finally, parametric studies have been conducted using the verified model to investigate the effect of impact velocity and relative density towards the dynamic response of the foam projectile. It is found that the dynamic response of the foam is more sensitive towards impact velocity as compare with the foam relative density.

With the advancement of technology, aiming for achieving a greater lightness and smaller size of 3C products, parts processing technology not only needs to explore the basic scientific theory of materials but also needs to discuss the process of deep drawing numerical and the plastic deformation. This study is based on the square shape of the deep drawing numerical simulation, and aluminum alloy plastic flow stress was input into the finite element method for simulation of plastic deformation in the aluminum alloy friction, mold clamping force, and frequency, as well as amplitude in the influence of forming mechanism and the drawing ratio of aluminum alloy. Finite element analysis software has the function of grid automatic rebuild, which can rebuild the broken grid in the analysis into a complete grid shape, which can avoid the divergence caused by numerical calculation in the analysis process. The greater the obtained error value, the best plastic parameters can be found.

The dynamic characteristics analysis about the jet pipe electro-hydraulic servo valve based on experience and mathematical derivation was difficult and not so precise. So we have analysed the armature feedback components, torque motor and jet pipe receiver in electrohydraulic servo valve by sophisticated finite element analysis tools respectively and have got physical meaning data on these parts. Then the data were fitted by Matlab and the mathematical relationships among them were calculated. We have done the dynamic multi-physical fields’ Simulink co-simulation using above mathematical relationship, and have got the input-output relationship of the overall valve, the frequency response and step response. This work can show the actual working condition accurately. At the same time, we have considered the materials and the impact of the critical design dimensions in the finite element analysis process. It provides some new ideas to the overall design of jet pipe electro-hydraulic servo valve.

This paper focuses on discussing the application of FEA theory and method in calculation of composite structure strength between engine cylinder head and head gasket. Based on finite element analysis software, the integrated system of 3D CAD/CAE application software was developed for the finite-element analysis of the composite structure consisting of engine cylinder head and head gasket. By using the software system, several jobs, such as working condition analysis from preloading to outburst operation, structural analysis and steady-state thermal analysis, and thermo-structure coupling analysis, were carried out. The results studied in this paper provide a new idea and method for the finite element analysis of composite structure between engine cylinder head and head gasket.
