This work presented the inventory of ferns and lycophytes of Jaú, São Paulo state. Sixty-eight species of ferns and one of lycophyte were recorded, distributed in 16 families and 32 genera. The richest families were Pteridaceae and Thelypteridaceae with 15 species each, Polypodiaceae (7spp.), Blechnaceae and Dryopteridaceae (5 spp. each). The most common guild of life form was terrestrial herbs with 57 species, followed by epiphytes (6 spp.), arborescent, aquatic and lithophytes (2 spp. each) and hemiepiphytes and scandents with one species each. The analysis of the geographical distribution showed that 46% of the species (32 spp.) occur in the Neotropics, 20 species occurs in Southern America, eight are endemic of Brazil, five pantropical and four are exotic. This study can further collaborate in the protection and preservation of the few remnants which represent probably the last areas where some species of these groups of plants occurring in the municipality.

We present the floristic survey of ferns and lycophytes from the “Parque Estadual Turístico do Alto Ribeira” (PETAR), a remnant of Atlantic Rain Forest of Southeastern Brazil, in São Paulo state. Besides a complete list of species, we also provide information on habit, geographic distribution, and conservation status. Among the 237 taxa, there are 235 species, one variety and one hybrid, distributed in 29 families and 74 genera. Ferns are represented by 223 taxa, whereas the lycophytes were represented by 14. The most representative families are Polypodiaceae (31 spp.), Pteridaceae (29 spp.) and Dryopteridaceae (28 spp.). The most diverse genera are Thelypteris (23 spp.), Asplenium (19 spp.), Elaphoglossum and Blechnum (10 spp. each). Noteworthy is the presence of Ctenitis anniesii, Dicksonia sellowiana, Elaphoglossum iguapense, E. prestonii, E. strictum, Thelypteris concinna, T. araucariensis and T. hatschbachii, all of them considered as endangered species in São Paulo state.

Heimbra bicolor Subba Rao, 1978 (Hymenoptera, Eurytomidae) was previously known in Mexico, Argentina, Paraguay, and Brazil, with records in Federal District and Rio Grande do Norte, Minas Gerais, and Santa Catarina states. Here, we newly report this species from the state of São Paulo based on three females collected at Estação Ecológica de Jataí, in the municipality of Luiz Antônio, São Paulo state, Brazil. Additionally, we provide a map with the geographical distribution of the species based on the new record and literature. This record increases the number of species of Heimbra known in São Paulo state to two species.

This paper describes the recent expansion of the geographical distribution of Limnoperna fortunei (Dunker, 1857) in the Tietê River watershed, São Paulo State, Brazil. Estimations related to the velocity of invasion and its causes are presented. Ecological implications related to biodiversity and possible changes in the food chain are discussed.

The genus Parapentaneura was established in 2006 and is composed of a single species, Parapentaneura bentogomensis, originally from Mato Grosso State. This species was collected in São Paulo State and is thus redescribed. The specimens from both localities were compared, adding new characters to the description of the species and emending the genus diagnosis. The new record increases considerably the geographical distribution of Parapentaneura.

We present the first record of Gomesa leinigii (Pabst) M.W. Chase & N.H. Williams in São Paulo state, Brazil, previously known only in the state of Paraná, extended its geographical distribution. We also document newly discovered populations of Macradenia paraensis Barb.Rodr. and Peperomia psilostachya C.DC. in São Paulo state, Brazil. Description, comments, conservation status, photographic figures and a distribution map of these species are presented.

The taxonomy and ecology of the cyclopoid copepod genus Thermocyclops were studied. Samples were collected in 207 water bodies located in the 22 hydrographic basins of São Paulo State, Brazil, including large reservoirs, small and shallow lakes, and ponds and rivers. The genus Thermocyclops inhabits mainly water bodies within a limnetic region. Four species were found, of which one is new: Thermocyclops iguapensis, which occurred in the reservoirs of the Ribeira do Iguape and Paraíba do Sul basins. The description of the new species and the geographical distribution of all four species in São Paulo State are presented. Thermocyclops decipiens was the most frequent species, occurring in 71% of the water bodies within a limnetic region. This species is characteristic of eutrophic environments where it can occur in great abundance, whereas Thermocyclops minutus is characteristic in oligotrophic systems. Thermocyclops inversus and Thermocyclops iguapensis n. sp. were not common but can occur together with Thermocyclops decipiens.

ABSTRACT: The woodwasp Sirex noctilio (Fabricius) (Hymenoptera: Siricidae) is one of the main pests of Pinus plantations in South America. The aim of this study is to report the occurrence of S. noctilio in Pinus taeda in Botucatu, São Paulo, Brazil. The surveys were carried out in the arboretum of Faculdade de Ciências Agronômicas (FCA) da Universidade Estadual Paulista “Júlio de Mesquita Filho” (UNESP), campus Botucatu, SP where six species of Pinus are distributed in blocks of 100 trees. Resin beads were observed on the trunks and stems of Pinus species. In post-flight evaluation it was reported that 8.77% of P. taeda trees showed symptoms of oviposition by S. noctilio. A female S. noctilio was found performing oviposition. Sirex noctilio is present in Botucatu, increasing the geographical distribution of the pest in São Paulo State.
