Abstract Aim We aimed to characterize the structure of the phytoplankton community and identify the main environmental factors driving the community in five reservoirs constructed in the region of the high Paraná River. Methods The phytoplankton and environmental variables were collected at the lacustrine region of the reservoir, between November 2013 and November 2014, with interval between collections ranged from 3 to 6 months. The richness and biomass of the phytoplankton community were measured as a response to the spatial and temporal environmental variability. Data from environmental variables was analyzed by Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Non-Metric Multidimensional Scaling Analyzes (NMDS) were performed on the richness and biomass data of the phytoplankton community. Results We identified 80 taxa distributed in 11 taxonomic classes, from which Cyanobacteria and Chlorophyceae were best represented. We did not observe significant temporal variation for either environmental variables or attributes of the phytoplankton community, which may be related to the prolonged drought in this period in the Brazilian Southwest. Higher phytoplankton richness and biomass were found in the Três Irmãos (Tiete River), reservoir located in the most anthropized basin in the country. Cyanobacteria and dinoflagellates dominated the biomass in all reservoirs during the studied period. The Ilha Solteira, Jupiá and Porto Primavera reservoirs showed a tendency to decrease in the values of phytoplankton richness and biomass, and the reservoirs built in series in the Paraná River probably have strong interdependence, according to the CRCC concept. Conclusions Spatial variation in phytoplankton attributes was influenced mainly by the position occupied by the reservoir in the hydrographic basin, water retention time (RT) and nutrient concentrations in each reservoir.

ABREU, P. A. S.; HERNANDEZ, F. B. T. NORMAL AND SEQUENTIAL CLIMATOLOGICAL WATER BALANCE IN THE MUNICIPALITY OF PEREIRA BARRETO - SP AS AID FOR THE PLANNING OF IRRIGATED AGRICULTURE     2 ABSTRACT   This work aimed to generate a normal and sequential climatological water balance (BHC) for the municipality of Pereira Barreto, SP to identify the periods of the year with surplus and deficit of water in the soil. Two BHCs were carried out for the municipality determined by the method of Thorthwaite and Mather (1955), based on data from the automatic agro-meteorological stations Bonança and Santa Adélia, belonging to the Northwest Agro-meteorological Network of the Northwest, operated by Unesp of Ilha Solteira. The average annual precipitation is 1214 mm and the evapotranspiration is 1340 mm for the Bonança Station, while for the Santa Adélia Station, the average annual precipitation is 1204 mm and evapotranspiration is 1574 mm. With the available Water Storage (CAD) of 40 mm, the BHCs found seven months of water deficit in the soil, between March and October in the Bonança Station, located on the banks of the Tietê River and from April to November in the Santa Adélia Station, located in the northwest portion of the municipality. Excess water in the soil in the Bonança Station occurred between the months of November and February and in the Santa Adélia Station, between January and March. BHC showed a high risk of crop failure with annual crops in the municipality without the use of irrigation.   Keywords: evapotranspiration, water deficit, irrigation, agrometeorology, Northwest Paulista.

Urocleidoides spp. are reported from the gills of 20 specimens of Parodon nasus (standard length 8.5–12 cm), from the Indiana stream, Tietê River, Upper Paraná River basin, municipality of Botucatu, São Paulo State, Brazil. Urocleoidoides tenuis and two new species were found. Urocleidoides indianensis n. sp. differs from its congeners mainly by the morphology of the vaginal sclerite that is robust, sickle-shaped, and forked at the distal end; and by the bulbous-shaped accessory piece of the male copulatory complex. Urocleidoides parodoni n. sp. resembles U. tenuis by presenting male copulatory organ with approximately 7 ½ counterclockwise rings, but differs by the morphology of the accessory piece (lobate with a small hook-like projection versus pincer-shaped), vaginal sclerite (thumb-like subterminal projection vs. presence of a distal hook), vaginal tube (conspicuously sclerotized vs. slightly sclerotized), shape of the ventral bar (bowed vs. wide V-shaped), ventral and dorsal anchors (robust base and short shaft vs. considerably less robust base and long shaft), and hooks (slender shank with a weakly sclerotized subunit at base vs. dilated shank). Sequences of the partial 28S rDNA gene of the dactylogyrids found in this study are provided. Phylogenetic analyses showed Urocledoides spp. from Parodontidae clustering together with strong support values. This study increases the number of valid Urocleidoides species to 39, and the number of species described from parodontid hosts to four.

Projections of surface temperature in the hydrographic basin of the Tietê river - SP for the end of the 21st century A B S T R A C TThe hydrographic basin of the Tietê river has been affected by changes in its use and land cover, mainly on its banks, which directly influence the surface temperature (Ts). In this context, the objective of the work is to seasonally characterize the Ts in the referred basin and present projections of this variable obtained with the ETA model in high resolution (5 km), under the scenarios RCP4.5 and RCP8.5, and considering 3-time slices: 2006-2040, 2040-2070, 2070-2100. Some calculations (such as climatological averages and bias) were necessary to understand the magnitude of the changes that have occurred and those that may occur. By the end of the 21st century, some areas of the Tietê river basin, as well as its mouth region, may show an increase of up to 5º C (8º C) in the period between 2070 - 2100 of the RCP4.5 (8.5) scenario, which may impact both economic activities and the daily lives of the population. Keywords: Climate Change; Hydrographic Basin; Sao Paulo

Abstract This study intended to characterize the fee-fishing ponds located in Guarapiranga's sub-basin both in terms of structure and environmental conditions. The studied region was mapped and 15 out of 24 georeferenced fee-fishing ponds had their owners interviewed through semi-structured questionnaires. In addition to that, samples were collected from the seven fee-fishing ponds closest to the reservoir throughout a seasonal cycle divided in four sample collections carried out between November 2013 and August 2014, aiming at measuring the following variables in situ: water flow rates, pH, turbidity, electrical conductivity and dissolved oxygen concentration in affluents and effluents. Other samples were taken in order to assess total phosphorus (TP) and total nitrogen (TN) concentrations. Our results show a decrease in dissolved oxygen concentration along with an increase in TP and TN concentration in effluents, as compared to affluents. TP e TN concentrations exceeded the permitted values established by CONAMA 357/2005 – Class II resolution in all effluents at least during part of the year. High nutrient levels were observed in affluents, condition with which basins that have been affected by population growth are commonly met. It was verified, by interviewing the owners regarding venture management and by analyzing the collected samples, that there is significant correlation between the daily feeding and the TP and TN levels (p=0.021 and p=0.045, respectively), with the ponds where feeding is more intense having showed the highest nutrient levels in their effluents. The results highlight the importance of mitigation measures such as educating the owners on proper water management, the installation of pond aerators in conjunction with tanks the filters of which shall be composed of aquatic macrophytes in their effluents, as well as awareness campaigns aiming to reduce the usage of dough by fishermen in order to minimize detrimental impacts on Guarapiranga’s sub-basin.

SummaryThe present study aimed to evaluate two different methods of artificial reproduction induction, and characterize the embryonic development of Salminus hilarii. Different than observed for other tropical fish species, artificial reproduction induction followed by hand-stripping of gametes was considered unfeasible for S. hilarii, as no gamete fertilization was observed. However, females that were induced and spawned naturally presented a fertilization rate of 65.64 ± 0.54%. With a mean temperature of 26.20 ± 0.90ºC it was possible to clearly distinguish a large perivitelline space at 14 min after fertilization (AF) and at 49 min AF more than 50% of the embryos presented two blastomeres, and these cleavages occurred until 1 h 54 min AF. The gastrula phase was characterized at 3 h 56 min AF, and blastopore closure was observed at 8 h 31 min AF. At 9 h 1 min, organogenesis started, with a clear distinction of the yolk mass, embryonic axis, cephalic and caudal regions; at 11 h 51 min AF the embryos already had advanced segmentation and a free tail. Total hatching occurred at 21 h 17 min and after opening the mouth, which occurred at 33 h 9 min, the larvae of S. hilarii presented a strong and characteristic cannibalism. This information can be considered fundamental to improving S. hilarii production in captivity and for collaboration with a conservation programme in the upper Tietê river basin.
