The occurrences of nine species of Orchidaceae belonging to six genera: Alatiglossum (2 species), Baptistonia (2), Cattleya (1), Encyclia (2), Promenaea (1) and Stelis (1) are noted here for the first time in Serra do Cipó, Minas Gerais state, Brasil. Morphological characters of the genera are briefly described. These new records highlight the importance to preserve the area.

Abstract The importance of continuously conducting botanical inventories has been questioned in recent decades, generating a lack of investment and interest in this area. However, several applied studies are only possible after obtaining the primary data from such surveys. Despite having the greatest richness of plants known in Brazil, several areas with knowledge gaps remain in Minas Gerais (MG) state. This is the case for the Serra da Mantiqueira, an important area for biodiversity conservation in the country. In this scenario, the phytophysiognomy of Seasonal Semi-deciduous Forest (SSF) deserves attention, as it is broadly distributed and has great relevance in the state, although subsampled. Therefore, this study aimed to present records of species for the flora of MG and discuss the need for floristic surveys in Brazil. These species were recorded in three of 10 studied remnants along expeditions performed between the years of 2012 and 2019 as part of a wide study performed in SSF remnants in the Serra da Mantiqueira which have a deficit of floristic data. Three species are recorded for the first time in MG, one species was rediscovered after more than two centuries from the last collection (which represents its nomenclatural type), in addition to nine other species which must be considered rare in the state. This study contributed to filling gaps in knowledge on Brazilian flora and also demonstrated the relevance of continuing new collections, mainly in specific subsampled areas in the interior of the country such as in SSF remnants.

The Drosera villosa complex is here reviewed and includes six species endemic to Brazil: D. villosa, here identified for the first time as a narrow endemic species native to the neighboring highlands of the Serra Negra and Serra do Ibitipoca, in southern Minas Gerais state; D. ascendens, rediscovered nearly 200 years after its description, narrowly endemic to the Diamantina Plateau, central Minas Gerais; D. graomogolensis, endemic to northern Minas Gerais, but here found to be more widespread than previously reported; D. latifolia, a highly polymorphic and widespread taxon, previously placed in synonymy of D. villosa and heretofore misidentified as D. ascendens, is here elevated to species rank; and two new species here described, D. riparia and D. chimaera. Furthermore, two new natural hybrids are reported: D. villosa × D. tomentosa var. glabrata and D. latifolia × D. tomentosa. The morphological characters distinguishing these taxa from each other and from similar species are discussed, together with habitat and ecological information, detailed illustrations and photographs, distribution maps, and a key to the species of the D. villosa complex is provided.

Protected areas are designed to maintain environmental conditions that favor the occurrence of a wide variety of taxa. However, few studies have devoted attention to inventories of biota in these areas. In this study, we provide a checklist of cladocerans for the poorly studied Sempre Vivas National Park, Minas Gerais state. Samples were collected in lotic and lentic environments, with a total of 27 species being recorded and the highest contribution coming from the Chydoridae family (21 spp.). Minas Gerais state is widely studied in relation to cladoceran fauna; nevertheless, the results indicate three new records. The genus Monospilus was reported for the first time in the Neotropical region.

The occurrence of the species of the genus Brycon (Characiformes: Bryconidae) in Espírito Santo State is herein reviewed. Brycon opalinus, a species formerly known only from the upper rio Paraíba do Sul and upper rio Doce basins, is recorded for the first time in the rio Itapemirim, an independent coastal basin in southern Espírito Santo State, Brazil. With the records of B. opalinus, four Brycon species are now known from Espírito Santo State: B. insignis in the rio Itabapoana basin, on the boundary between Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo, B. opalinus in the rio Itapemirim basin, B. dulcis in the rio Doce basin, and B. ferox in the rio Barra Seca, rio Itaúnas and the rio São Mateus basins. Additionally worth highlighting is that several fisherman and local inhabitants report the occurrence Brycon vermelha in the rio Cotaxé, a tributary of the rio São Mateus in Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais states, although there are no preserved specimens of B. vermelha from river basins other than the rio Mucuri, in Minas Gerais state.

Celaenorrhinus pyrrha de Nicéville, 1889, a rare species of Hesperiidae previously known to be distributed from northeastern India to Indochina, is reported from southwestern Yunnan and southwestern Chongqing, China. A 658 bp COI gene sequence of this species is published for the first time. Although Chongqing is obviously isolated from the main distribution range, morphological characters of the specimens from this locality do not indicate a subspecies differentiation. Another rare taxon, C. munda munda (Moore, 1884), is also recorded from China for the first time based upon a male specimen from Cuona County in the Tibet Autonomous Region. This is the second specimen of C. munda from China, over 100 years after the holotype of C. munda joka Evans, 1949. The genitalia of both species are illustrated and described. Some taxonomic notes and a distribution map are provided as well.

El objetivo del presente estudio fue investigar la prevalencia de infestación de ectoparásitos asociados a mamíferos pequeños del Cerrado en el Parque Nacional Serra do Cipó, Estado de Minas Gerais, Brasil. De abril a septiembre de 2007, capturamos 95 mamíferos pequeños, los cuales representaron nueve especies: seis pertenecen al Orden Rodentia: Cerradomys subflavus (Wagner 1842), Nectomys squamipes (Brants 1827), Thrichomys apereoides (Lund,1939), Rhipidomys mastacalis (Lund 1840), Necromys lasiurus (Lund 1841), Oligoryzomys nigripes Olfers 1818, y tres al Orden Didelphimorphia: Gracilinanus agilis (Burmeister 1854), Marmosops incanus (Lund 1840) y Didelphis albiventris (Lund,1841). Identificamos ectoparásitos de cinco órdenes: Ixodida, Gamasida, Phthiraptera, Siphonaptera y Diptera y varias especies de ectoparasitos como: Amblyomma sp, Laelaps paulistanensis Fonseca 1936, Laelaps differens Fonseca 1936, Laelaps manguinhosi Fonseca 1936, Tur lativentralis (Fonseca 1936), Gigantolaelaps goyanensis Fonseca 1939, Gigantolaelaps vitzthumi Fonseca 1939, Androlaelaps (Haemolaelaps) fahrenholzi (Berleze 1911), Eubrachylaelaps rotundus (Fonseca1936), Mysolaelaps parvispinosus Fonseca 1936, Ctenophthirus cercomydis Ferris1922, Hoplopleura imparata Linardi 1984, Eogyropus lenti lenti Werneck 1936, Tunga penetrans (Linnaeus 1758) y Poligenes tripus (Jordania 1933). This note extends the geographical distribution of two rare species of Mantispidae (Neuroptera) in Minas Gerais state, Brazil. This is the first record of Gerst­aeckerella irrorata and the second record of Plega zikani for the state.

The mammals of the Cerrado (Brazilian Savanna Biome) are still poorly known; only a few localities have been properly surveyed and studied. Hereby, we present a survey of the mammals of Serra do Cipó National Park, a protected area of Cerrado in Minas Gerais State, southeastern Brazil. A total of 55 species from eight orders were listed, which have been captured, observed or recorded in the literature. Some mammals are endemic or listed as threatened either by IUCN’s red list or by the national and regional red lists. Serra do Cipó National Park is an important site for scientific research and conservation of Minas Gerais’ biodiversity, though there is little information on mammal diversity and distribution in the park. We hope our study can help us fill this gap and improve the effectiveness of this national park in protecting Cerrado mammals and other vertebrates.

In this paper a new species of Cryptachaea Archer, 1946 based on males and females is described from Brazilian caves: Cryptachaea pilar Santanna & Rodrigues, new species from the states of Minas Gerais and São Paulo. The females of Cryptachaea parana (Levi, 1963) and C. schneirlai (Levi, 1959) are described and illustrated for the first time. Cryptachaea uviana (Levi, 1963) is synonymized with C. migrans (Keyserling, 1884). The species Cryptachaea alacris (Keyserling, 1884), C. benivia Rodrigues & Poeta, 2015, C. parana (Levi, 1963) and C. schneirlai (Levi, 1959) are recorded for the first from Brazil; and C. migrans for the first time from Bolivia. Additionally, new records from Brazilian caves are provided for Cryptachaea parana, from the states of Tocantins, Goiás, Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso do Sul and São Paulo; C. schneirlai and C. alacris from the state of Pará; C. dea (Buckup & Marques, 2006) and C. rioensis (Levi, 1963) from Pará and Minas Gerais, C. jequirituba (Levi, 1963) from Minas Gerais and C. benivia from São Paulo.

Hyphessobrycon uaiso is described from the upper rio Paraná basin, rio Grande drainage, Minas Gerais State. The new species differs from its congeners by the short anal fin with 12-17 branched rays, and dorsal fin with ii,7-8 rays. Besides, it can be distinguished by the presence of i,5-6 pelvic fin rays, and by the coloration of the eyes (in life), slightly blue on the lower half and blackish on the upper half. New records of Hyphessobryconare recognized for the upper rio Paraná basin: H. eilyos Lima & Moreira, H. guarani Mahnert & Géry, and H. herbertaxelrodi Géry. The knowledge status about the ichthyofauna from the upper rio Paraná basin and comments about the type material of some species of Hyphessobrycon are briefly discussed.
