AbstractThe intervertebral disc is a complex hierarchical structure composed of the annulus fibrosus and nucleus pulposus which are anchored to the vertebral bodies by cartilaginous endplates. The hierarchical structure of the collagenous components of the intervertebral disc is characterized using optical microscope techniques. In the lamellae of the annulus, collagen fibers exhibit a planar crimped morphology similar to that seen in other collagenous tissues. A model of the intervertebral disc has been developed that incorporates the structure of the collagen fibers on the macro- and microscopic scales.Mechanical testing in load-deflection, stress relaxation, and creep modes reveals the response at each level of organization to compression. These mechanical data are analyzed with models that reflect the hierarchical composite structure.

The annulus fibrosus (AF) of the intervertebral disc (IVD) consists of a set of concentric layers composed of a primary circumferential collagen fibers arranged in an alternating oblique orientation. Moreover, there exists an additional secondary set of radial translamellar collagen fibers which connects the concentric layers, creating an interconnected fiber network. The aim of this study was to investigate the mechanical role of the radial fiber network. Toward that goal, a three-dimensional (3D) finite element model of the L3–L4 spinal segment was generated and calibrated to axial compression and pure moment loading. The AF model explicitly recognizes the two heterogeneous networks of fibers. The presence of radial fibers demonstrated a pronounced effect on the local disc responses under lateral bending, flexion, and extension modes. In these modes, the radial fibers were in a tensile state in the disc region that subjected to compression. In addition, the circumferential fibers, on the opposite side of the IVD, were also under tension. The local stress in the matrix was decreased in up to 9% in the radial fibers presence. This implies an active fiber network acting collectively to reduce the stresses and strains in the AF lamellae. Moreover, a reduction of 26.6% in the matrix sideways expansion was seen in the presence of the radial fibers near the neutral bending axis of the disc. The proposed biomechanical model provided a new insight into the mechanical role of the radial collagen fibers in the AF structure. This model can assist in the design of future IVD substitutes.

In general, the modern literature pays attention to the issues of spine pathology and intervertebral discs. A significant percentage of vertebral disorders - scoliosis, osteochondrosis, spinal disc herniation, etc., occur as a result of exposure to various factors and manifest in changes of the intervertebral discs. The aim of our work was to study at the ultrastructural level the features of pathomorphological manifestations in the structural components of the intervertebral disc at the end of the seventh and fourteenth days of experimental opioid exposure. Materials and methods of research. The objects of the study were 32 sexually mature, white, male rats, weighing 92 - 103 g, aged 4.5 months. Animals were injected with nalbupine intramuscularly once daily (at 10-11 a.m.) for 14 days. The initial dose of nalbuphine was 8 mg/kg during the first week, 15 mg/kg during the second week. It created the conditions of chronic opioid exposure. Before sampling, the animals were withdrawn from the experiment using dibutyl ether. Intervertebral discs of rats were used as a material for ultrastructural study. Ultrastructural specimens were prepared according to the accepted methods. The results of the study. As a result of the sampling after 7 days of opioid exposure we found inhomogeneous osmiophilicity and compaction of the nucleus pulposus matrix in which intensively accumulated osmiophilic grains of glycogen proteoglycans, increased the number of collagen fibers, some of them were heterogeneous. It was also noted the development of moderate degenerative changes in some notochondral cells, which was accompanied by increased vacuolization of the cytoplasm by inhomogeneous compaction of the nucleus and an increase of heterochromatin there. After 14 days necrotic changes in the cells of the nucleus pulposus, as well as the destruction of collagen fibers of the annulus fibrosus were found. In particular, an increase in the amount of heterochromatin in the nucleui of notochondral cells, which was accompanied by a decrease in the volume of the nucleui and inhomogeneous swelling of the cytoplasm. Active fibroblasts were often visualized in the annulus fibrosus. Intense osmiophilicity and thickening of collagen fibers of the annulus fibrosus were observed in some areas of the fibrous ring. Focal destruction of collagen fibers was also noted. In the areas of destruction the fibrils of collagen fibers disintegrated into an inhomogeneous fine-grained stratified mass and were located loosely. Conclusions. At the end of the first week we found that the cytoplasmic processes of chondrocytes decreased in volume, shortened, underwent fragmentation and destruction, some of them detached from the surface of the plasmolemma. At the end of the second week signs of opioid exposure progressed and manifested by an increase in the destruction of cytoplasmic processes in chondrocytes. Also focal destruction of collagen fibers was noted.

AbstractThe following paper depicts the history of Saint Simeon Stylites Uniate Parish in Rachanie since it became known in historical sources until 1811- that is the time it ceased to be an independent church unit. The introduction of the article contains the geographical location of the parish, its size and the position within the hierarchical structure of the Church. Having analysed post-visit inspection protocols left by Chelm Bishops, the appearance as well as fittings and ancillary equipment of the church in Rachanie in that particular period are reported. Moreover, the list of 4 local clergymen is recreated and their benefice is determined. As far as possible, both the number of worshipers and the number of Holy Communion receivers is determined.

Representation systems based on inheritance networks are founded on the hierarchical structure of knowledge. Such representation is composed of a set of objects and a set of is-a links between nodes. Objects are generally defined by means of a set of properties. An inheritance mechanism enables us to share properties across the hierarchy, called an inheritance graph. It is often difficult, even impossible to define classes by means of a set of necessary and sufficient conditions. For this reason, exceptions must be allowed and they induce nonmonotonic reasoning. Many researchers have used default logic to give them formal semantics and to define sound inferences. In this paper, we propose a survey of the different models of nonmonotonic inheritance systems by means of default logic. A comparison between default theories and inheritance mechanisms is made. In conclusion, the ability of default logic to take some inheritance mechanisms into account is discussed.
