AbstractA series of new sulfur-nitrogen ring systems with a neutral radical center were designed for incorporation into liquid crystal molecules and formation of discotic and calamitic phases. It is expected that these materials will display unusual magnetic properties associated with partially oriented bulk liquid crystal structures. Synthetic progress toward new radicals and the first discogen with nr-delocalized neutral radical is described.

We present the method for coherence length measurement using coherence meter based on hybrid liquid crystal structures doped with gold nanoparticles. The results indicate that the method is able to determine the coherence length of coherent light sources with precision of 0.01 m at wavelength range from 200 to 800 nm for wide range of initial beam powers starting from 1 mW. Given the increasing use of laser technology in industry, military, or medicine, our research may open up a possible route for the development of improved techniques of coherent diagnostic light sources.

This article reports on the Dielectric Relaxation Studies of two Liquid Crystalline compounds - 7O.4 and 7O.6 - doped with dodecanethiol capped Silver Nanoparticles. The liquid crystal molecules are aligned homeotropically using CTAB. The low frequency relaxation process occurring above 1 MHz is fitted to Cole-Cole formula using the software Dielectric Spectra fit. The effect of the Silver Nanoparticles on the molecular dipole dynamics are discussed in terms of the fitted relaxation times, Cole-Cole distribution parameter and activation energy. The study indicate a local molecular rearrangement of the liquid crystal molecules without affecting the order of the bulk liquid crystal molecules but these local molecules surrounding the Silver Nanoparticles do not contribute to the relaxation process in the studied frequency range. The observed effect on activation energy suggests a change in interaction between the nanoparticles/liquid crystal molecules.

Basing on Landau–de Gennes theory, this study investigated the chiral configurations of nematic liquid crystals confined to cylindrical capillaries with homeotropic anchoring on the cylinder walls. When the elastic anisotropy (L2/L1) is large enough, a new structure results from the convergence of two opposite escape directions of the heterochiral twist and escape radial (TER) configurations. The new defect presents when L2/L1≥7 and disappears when L2/L1<7. The new structure possesses a heterochiral hyperbolic defect at the center and two homochiral radial defects on both sides. The two radial defects show different chiralities.
