ABSTRACTThis investigation studied the effects of Ho3+ and Er3+ on the luminescence of the blue emitting phosphor yttrium silicate, (Y1-mCem)2SiO5. Yttrium silicate has a large emission tail that extends into the red portion of the visual spectrum. To improve the chromaticity of this phosphor to give it a more saturated blue color, the emission intensity of the tail needs to be decreased. Photoluminscence and low-voltage cathodoluminescence measurements were performed on yttrium silicate phosphors with varying concentrations of Gd3+, Ho3+ and Er3+. It was found that when co-doping with Ho3+ and Er3+, the relative intensity of the emission tail was decreased, but so to was the overall luminescence intensity of this phosphor.

AbstractYttrium silicate activated with Ce3+, (Y1−xCex)2SiO5, has been found to be an efficient phosphor that can potentially be used as the blue-emitting component in field emission flat panel displays. This highly refractory powder can be synthesized by combustion synthesis, a low cost technique used to fabricate multicomponent oxide powders in a single step process. The effect of activator concentration and post-synthesis annealing was examined on the fluorescent properties. The powders were found to be monoclinic space group P21/c in the as-synthesized state, and transformed to monoclinic space group C2/c after annealing. The maximum luminous emission intensity was reached after a one hour anneal at 1350°C for x=0.0075, with the peak Ce3+ emission wavelength between 420 and 450 nm. When co-doped with Gd3+, no increase in the emission intensity was observed.

Thirty-seven coelenterazine analogues were synthesized and incorporated into apo-aequorin, yielding 30 semi-synthetic aequorins that have the capacity to emit a significant amount of light in the presence of Ca2+. The properties of resultant photoproteins were investigated. The most prominent feature of those photoproteins was the wide range in their sensitivities to Ca2+ concentration. The relative intensity of Ca2+-triggered luminescence of the photoproteins ranged from 0.01 to 190 when compared with natural aequorin (relative intensity 1.0) at pCa 6 for the cases where the relative intensity is less than 1 and at pCa 7 for the cases where the relative intensity is higher than 1. Eight of the semi-synthetic aequorins belonged to the class of e-aequorin. With two of those photoproteins, the degree of dependence of the luminescence intensity ratio I400/I465 on pCa was greater than that with e-aequorin, suggesting that these two photoproteins are possibly superior to e-aequorin in measuring Ca2+ concentration by the ratio method.

Yb3+and Er3+co-doped BaF2phosphors were prepared by high temperature solid reaction method. Effects of mol content ratios of Yb3+ion to Er3+ion (CYb3+∶CEr3+) and charge compensation agent Na2SiF6 contents on the up-conversion luminescence of the samples were studied. The XRD and PL were carried out to investigate the phases and the up-conversion luminescence. Three up-conversion emissions were observed with peaks at 460nm, 548nm and 660nm respectively. The up-conversion luminescence intensity increases firstly, and then decreases with increasing CYb3+∶CEr3+ and the optimal ratio was found to be at 12:2 with fixed Er3+contents 2mol%. The up-conversion emission intensity was enhanced by introducing Na2SiF6 as the charge compensation agents and its optimal content was found to be 2mol%.

The emission intensity of Ba0.985Sr0.985Al2SiO7:0.03Eu2+ is enhanced due to the incorporation of Dy3+. The emission intensity of Ba0.975Sr0.975Al2SiO7:0.03Eu2+, 0.02Dy3+ was about 350% that of the Ba0.985Sr0.985Al2SiO7:0.03Eu2+ phosphor.

To improve the Tb3+ upconversion emission intensity, a new approach, i.e. Mn2+ co-doping, has been proposed and verified in this work. The significant enhancement of the emission intensity as a result of the introduction of Mn2+ ions was observed.

ABSTRACTCe3+ luminescence in yttrium cerium aluminium borates was studied. A substantial red shift in photoluminescence and low-voltage cathodoluminescence spectra was found to be induced by Ce concentration increase. Complicated concentration dependence of emission intensity and strong influence of cerium content on emission wavelength suggest strong activator-host interaction in rare earth borates.

ABSTRACTThe present study aims at investigating the effect of co-doping on the photoluminescence(PL) property of Zn2SiO4:Mn phosphor. Experimental data were interpreted by the first principles embedded-cluster discrete variational (DV)-Xα method.
