Awareness and Usage of Environmental Waste Management Practices (EWMP) of Contractors on construction sites.

Construction wastes pose challenges to contractors and clients of construction projects globally, with significant negative consequences on the environment. This study investigates the environmental waste management practices (EWMPs) of contractors on construction sites. The objectives are to determine the level of awareness and adoption of EWMPs. The population of the study was construction professionals on sites in Lagos State, Nigeria. Random sampling technique was used to select 63 companies out of the 126 construction companies in categories C, D and E of firms registered with Lagos State Public Procurement Agency. The targeted respondents were construction professionals in the selected companies. Questionnaires were used to collect data from respondents. Descriptive statistics tools, including mean, percentage and frequency were used for analysis. The study's findings reveal that contractors are aware of about 28 out of the 47 EWMPs identified from literature. These include good site materials storage, ordering exact amount of materials and checking deliveries properly. It also reveals the strategies that are not used as belonging to material exchange/recyclers' association, polluter pays principle, usage of self-contained mini or mobile concrete crusher. It is concluded that although contractors are aware of 28 EWMPs, 26 EWMPs are used on construction sites which are 60% and 55%, respectively. It implies that awareness determines the usage of the EWMPs. The implication is that if the awareness of EWMPs is increased, the implementation among construction contractors will be improved. It is therefore recommended that professionals should increase their awareness and usage of neglected EWMPs. This can be achieved through construction firms, governments and institutions sponsoring training of professionals on EWMPs. Additionally, polluter pays principle and recyclers’ association should be enforced in project implementations. This can be achieved through government legislation and government regulatory policies for project procurements.Keywords: Awareness; Best practices; Construction sites; Nigeria; Waste management.

This paper examines the influence of population growth on waste generation in Lagos metropolis, African’s most populous urban conglomeration. Using both quantitative and qualitative methods, the study analyses the pattern of household waste disposal, collection and transportation in Lagos State. It also examines the public-private partnership strategy adopted in waste management. The findings show that population growth significantly influences waste generation and management in Lagos metropolis. As the population increased, the volume of waste generated also increased in each LGA of Lagos State. The public-private partnership strategy has been effective in managing waste, but the Lagos State Waste Management Authority oversight was adjudged as less than satisfactory. The paper concludes that intervention is needed in terms of educating the growing population of the Lagos metropolis on the best waste management practices. It highlights the need for a more efficient and effective publicprivate partnership collaboration to solve this perennial social problem.

Indiscriminate disposal of solid waste pollutes the environment and poses a health risk to the public. This study therefore examined the attitude and pattern of solid waste management practices among the residents of Oshodi-Isolo Local Government area, Lagos State. The study employed a descriptive cross-sectional design. A Multi-stage sampling technique was used to select 600 respondents for the study. A validated semi-structured interviewer administered questionnaire was used for data collection. Descriptive and inferential statistics were conducted to give statistical responses to the research questions and hypotheses using SPSS version 23. The mean age of respondents was 38.28±12.48years. More than half (51%) of the respondents were male. Majority (91%) of the respondents had positive attitude towards solid waste management. More (61.8%) of the respondents’ reported that they had waste bins in their houses. Less than half 247(41.2%) of the respondents did not separate their wet and dry waste before they disposal. Few (15.8%) of the respondents’ burned their waste. There is a significant relationship between resident’s attitude (r =0.14, p=0.00) and their solid waste disposal practice. Most of the respondents had a positive attitude towards proper waste management and poor practice of solid waste management. It is recommended that the government through the federal and state ministries of Health and Environment should create awareness via seminars, radio, televisions, and social media to teach best practices in waste management.

This study aims to investigate factors contributing to healthcare waste management practices among Libyan public hospitals. The organizational culture and structure are proposed to have their effect upon hospital organizational units in charge of healthcare waste production by a theoretical review to develop two main hypotheses. Hence, this study used the stratified random sampling technique to select respondents such as top management officials, heads of departments, and administrators who work in all the hospitals located in the south of Libya, from whom data was collected. The data for the study was gathered via a survey questionnaire from Libyan public hospitals in the country’s southern region. A total of 210 questionnaires were distributed and 171 usable responses were received, yielding a 70% response rate. Though the findings of the study show some inconsistency, the two dimensions of the culture examined in this study are found to have a positive relationship and significant influence on the management practices of health waste. Besides, it shows the positive relationship between organizational structure and healthcare waste management practices (HWMP). However, the findings of this study suggested that nurses and cleaners’ practices should critically consider structure dimensions such as formalization as well as moderating variables such as hospital location and type of services supplied on the interactions to improve the management of healthcare waste in Libya’s public hospitals.

Waste generated in the construction industry is a major environmental problem but its research is rather limited. Thus, this research was conducted to assess the waste disposal practices of construction companies at the Airport Hills and Sakumono areas in Accra, Ghana. These areas were chosen because of the increasing and fast development of housing projects there. A convenience sampling technique was used in choosing the companies to achieve the research goal. Questionnaires and field observations were used to gather information about the construction companies and their waste management practices. Forty construction companies were identified in both study areas. Majority of the companies recorded a total of 60-80 cubic meters of material waste per month. Eleven companies stated amounts of between USD 250 - 350 as cost of material waste management per month. Several reusable materials were identified at construction sites. Twenty-six companies practised sorting and recovery of waste before final disposal. It was revealed that there was no statistically significant relationship between the educational levels of waste management teams of the construction companies and their practice of proper waste management methods. A significant relationship however existed between the educational level of waste management teams and their use of waste management plans. It is recommended that waste management training programmes are developed by the Environmental Protection Agency of Ghana for construction companies to curb the problem of poor construction waste management.


This research paper focused on awareness about the management of solid waste among the public. The research is descriptive in nature. The study has gone through in Thanjavur District with 240 public as respondents. The researcher adopts a convenience sampling technique. The researcher used factor analysis, multiple regression and One-way anova statistical tools be used to assessed the data using IBM 21 SPSS package. The study result would be the baseline information about solid waste management in the research area. The results would help the municipalities to know the current position also needs of the community concerning solid waste management practices.

Background. The rapid growth of urban populations has led to a dramatic increase in urban waste generation with environmental and public health problems associated with water contamination, emission of toxic and noxious fumes, soil contamination and introduction of disease vector populations. Objectives. The aim of the present study was to assess solid waste disposal practices and challenges of solid waste management in Woldia town, northeastern Ethiopia. Methods. A descriptive research design was employed, using a survey method and naturalistic observational methods. A total of 236 households were surveyed, including waste collectors and cleaners, waste pickers, and 20 students and ten teachers from Woldia secondary and preparatory schools. A purposive sampling technique (made up of municipal officers, scavengers (waste pickers), waste collectors and cleaners and a simple random sampling technique (of teachers, students and kebeles of the study area) was employed, then proportional allocation was made for each randomly selected kebeles based on population size to determine the sample. Finally, survey questionnaire, interview, focus group discussion and observation were used as data collecting tools. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were also employed. Results. The current study revealed that educational status (AOR = 10.92, 95% CI = (3.12–38.27)), occupational status (AOR = 8.08, 95% CI = (2.08–31.31)), monthly income (AOR = 5.72, 95% CI = (1.55–21.13)), and age (AOR = 2.53, 95% CI = (1.04–6.19)) were found to be the major factors associated with solid waste management practices. Additionally, shortage of storage materials, lack of alternative waste disposal options, household attitudes, and lack of awareness were the major challenges for low performance of solid waste management practices of the local government and households. The focus group individuals and interviewed participants indicated that solid waste management practices were poor. Conclusions. The present study revealed that solid waste management practices in Woldia town remain inadequate. Therefore, efforts by the municipality and other stakeholders are needed to mitigate the problem of waste management and disposal practices. Participant Consent. Obtained Ethics Approval.
