It is now a common refrain among liberals that Christian Right pastors and television pundits have hijacked evangelical Christianity for partisan gain. This book challenges this notion, arguing that the hijacking metaphor paints a fundamentally distorted picture of how evangelical churches have become politicized. The book reveals how the powerful coalition between evangelicals and the Republican Party is not merely a creation of political elites who have framed conservative issues in religious language, but is anchored in the lives of local congregations. Drawing on research at evangelical churches near the U.S. border with Canada, this book compares how American and Canadian evangelicals talk about politics in congregational settings. While Canadian evangelicals share the same theology and conservative moral attitudes as their American counterparts, their politics are quite different. On the U.S. side of the border, political conservatism is woven into the very fabric of everyday religious practice. The book shows how subtle partisan cues emerge in small group interactions as members define how “we Christians” should relate to others in the broader civic arena, while liberals are cast in the role of adversaries. It explains how the most explicit partisan cues come not from clergy but rather from lay opinion leaders who help their less politically engaged peers to link evangelical identity to conservative politics. This book demonstrates how deep the ties remain between political conservatism and evangelical Christianity in America.

AbstractThe Cariri region is the most isolated and poor part of the rural zone of the diocese of Campina Grande in the Paraiba state of Brazil. The Catholic Church has been present here for a relatively short time: 335 years. Moreover the region has an isolated context and this favors conservatism so that only fundamental changes have an impact. These facts make the Cariri an interesting region for a case study about how Catholicism develops. I distinguish five periods, which are described with religious key words and situated in the socio-cultural context. This classification is a schematization: different types of Catholicism often exist together. It is obvious that the dominant features of Catholicism change with time, but in the mainstream of the fifth period we see a small revolution. Now there are not only influences in the socio cultural context and factors in the Church itself that cause changes, but there are also influences of powerful newcomers, the evangelical churches. Their main impact is that many people have left the Catholic Church and are going to live their old faith in a new form. The Catholic Church is searching for adequate ways to respond to this phenomenon.

Within contemporary culture, events dominate our leisure activities, and churches are not exempt from this trend. In the context of a study of church youth events, this research focuses on the wellbeing aspects of three growing churches and their youth events activities. In exploring the conceptualization of the eventization of faith, the research considers aspects of youth development, including wellbeing, from a Christian perspective. The aim of the paper is to identify and consider the influences of wellbeing in the purposes, content and outcomes of such faith events and their contribution to wellbeing in these temporary youthful church communities. It examines the concept of wellbeing through the cultural medium of events, focusing on case studies of the youth events of three independent, non-denominational, evangelical churches in the United Kingdom.

The literature on the single male suggests that singleness is psychologically unhealthy and possibly even damaging. The California Psychological Inventory (CPI) and the Dean Alienation Scale were administered to single and married populations of seven evangelical churches in the Los Angeles area. The 233 subjects were all from 25–34 years of age and divided into four groups based on sex and marital status. The single men were found to report significantly less dominance, social presence, self-acceptance, communality, and intellectual efficiency than the married men. The single men did not significantly differ from the single women on any of the scales. It was concluded that while married men are more well-adjusted than single men, there is no difference between the adjustment of single men and women.

Grupos de OraçãoAbstractDaily religious manifestations are observed in different places and occasions - schools, parties, people wearing clothes or symbols that expose their beliefs. Moreover, issues related to religion, religiosity and religious belonging have been constantly debated in different media, such as journal articles, television programs, books. Then some questions arose: how is this demonstration presented in an university environment? How do religious manifestations interfere with the educational process? To answer these questions an investigation was carried out whose purpose is to observe how faith demonstration is presented in a secular and scientific environment. This Communication aims to present some ways that expose youth and experience their faith within university environments and propose interdisciplinary debates on religious intolerance that has been manifested in school environments. State University of Londrina – UEL was used as a research field and limited our sample to participating GOU prayer’s students groups – the Catholic side - and the Pocket - whose members belong to evangelical churches - which meet weekly at UEL’s environments. As preliminary results, it is pointed out that religion is present in College students’ everyday, which promotes the reconciliation betweenreligion and science. Keywords: University.
