The book examines rum in anglophone Atlantic literature between 1945 and 1973, the period of decolonization, and explains the adaptation of these images for the era of globalization. Rum’s alcoholic nature links it to stereotypes (e.g., piracy, demon rum, Caribbean tourism) that have constrained serious analysis in the field of colonial commodities. Insights from anthropology, history, and commodity theory yield new understandings of rum’s role in containing the paradox of a postcolonial world still riddled with the legacies of colonialism. The association of rum with slavery causes slippage between its specific role in economic exploitation and moral attitudes about the consequences of drinking. These attitudes mask history that enables continued sexual, environmental, and political exploitation of Caribbean people and spaces. Gendered and racialized drinking taboos transfer blame to individuals and cultures rather than international structures, as seen in examinations of works by V. S. Naipaul, Hunter S. Thompson, Jean Rhys, and Sylvia Townsend Warner. More broadly, these stereotypes and taboos threaten understanding West Indian nationalism in works by Earl Lovelace, George Lamming, and Sylvia Wynter. The conclusion articulates the popular force of rum’s image by addressing the relationship between a meme from the "Pirates of the Caribbean" films and rhetoric during the 2016 election year.

Researchers have speculated that religious traditions influence an individual's moral attitude and care toward robots. They propose that differences in moral care could be explained by values motivated by religion, anthropocentrism and animism. Here, we empirically examined how moral care for robots is influenced by religious belief and attendance with US and Japanese samples, cultures that are Abrahamic and Shinto-Buddhist traditions respectively (N = 3781). Moral care was higher in Japan and participants with higher religious beliefs had less moral care for robots only in the US. Further, participants who scored low on anthropocentrism and high on animism were more likely to attribute moral care for robots. Anthropocentrism in the US and Animism in Japan had a larger effect compared to the other country. The finding demonstrates how religion could influence moral attitudes for robots, and might suggest the realm of moral consideration could be shaped by cultural traditions.

The article is devoted to the study of the specifics of the receptive influence of the moral and psychological novel by F. Dostoevskys on the development of the Russian historiosophical novel of the XXth century. The relevance of the problem is in the identification of an ideological dominant connected with the key problems associated with the moral attitudes of Dostoevsky's novelistics. The novelty of this study lies in considering, taking into account new ideological assessments of the role and status of a historical person, a historical novel about the narodovoltsy of the 50-60s of the ХХth century. The novels about the narodovoltsy of the 50-60s of ХХth century were chosen as an object of research to reflect the ideological concept of F. Dostoevsky in the receptive field of the searches of the XXth century writers and as a determinant of the moral coordinates of modern phenomena of reality. It is proved that the development of the moral and psychological historical novel in the 60-70s takes place under the strongest influence of the tradition of F. Dostoevsky. The receptive correlation of the genre coordinate system, subjective organization, historiosophical ideologism of the XXth century with the traditions of the moral and psychological historiosophy of Dostoevskys contextual field, on the one hand, forms a new Tynyanov-Forsh tradition, and on the other, develops the traditions of the writer's polyphonic ideological novel on a new level and determines the expansion of the moral polyphonism of the historical novel in its value and psychoanalytic orientation, when the principle of internal ethics begins to dominate the ideological and political fields.

Annotation. The level of subjective control may vary in different regions depending on social and economic living conditions, moral attitudes and level of education of the population. Circumstances such as age, gender and constitutional variability in the locus of control cannot be ruled out (although there is very little research on this issue). The purpose of the study is to conduct a comparative study of the typological delineation of the emotional-dynamic pattern in practically healthy Ukrainian women without and taking into account the somatotype. Primary anthropo-somatotypological and personality indicators of practically healthy Ukrainian women aged 21 to 35 of different somatotypes were selected from the database of materials of the research center of National Pirogov Memorial Medical University, Vinnytsya. Determination of the components of internality by J. Rotter in the modification of E. F. Bazhin, S. O. Golinkina and O. M. Etkind included the definition (sten): indicator of the scale of general internality of the level of subjective control, indicators of the level of subjective control in the industry achievements, failures, family relationships, educational (professional) relationships, interpersonal relationships, health and disease. Statistical processing of the results was performed in the license package “Statistica 5.5” using non-parametric evaluation methods. The reliability of the difference between the values between the independent quantitative values was determined using the U-Mann-Whitney test. There was a lower level of general internality and subjective control in the field of achievement in mesomorphic women compared to women without taking into account somatotype and women of other somatotypes. According to the scale of internality in the field of failures in women without taking into account somatotype, endo-mesomorphs and representatives of the middle intermediate somatotype, the most developed sense of control over negative situations and the tendency to blame themselves for trouble compared to mesomorphic women. It is characteristic that in the sphere of family relations this image emerges especially clearly in mesomorphic women; they consider their partner, not themselves, to be more responsible for the events of family life. Women of intermediate somatotype compared to women without somatotype and women mesomorphs and ectomorphs have a higher level of internality in the field of interpersonal relationships. The level of subjective health and disease control in endo-mesomorphic women is significantly lower than in ectomorphic women. Thus, the level and various parameters of subjective control can be used as personal markers of the studied somatotype, which will create optimal and most individualized recommendations for psychological support, adaptation and coping strategies.

The article deals with the issue of common elements between expansion of criminal law regulations and state intervention in the economy. Taking the perspective of individualism, the author assumes that the paternalism behind these phenomena is difficult to accept. In a liberal state, the law should not be used to impose certain moral attitudes on citizens.

This essay focuses on ideal moral attitudes in close personal relationships, respect for persons as human beings and as particular individuals, beneficence or “caring,” and appreciation that is distinct from both respect and beneficent caring for another’s happiness and well-being. In good friendships, for example, one not only respects the friend but appreciates good things about the friend and in the friend’s life. Appreciation is not the same as gratitude, though to be grateful is in part to appreciate the evident good will of another person. The essay notes several merits of supplementing standard accounts by including appreciation as an ideal.

Moral differences contribute to social and political conflicts. Against this backdrop, colleges and universities have been criticized for promoting liberal moral attitudes. However, direct evidence for these claims is sparse, and suggestive evidence from studies of political attitudes is inconclusive. Using four waves of data from the National Study of Youth and Religion, we examine the effects of higher education on attitudes related to three dimensions of morality that have been identified as central to conflict: moral relativism, concern for others, and concern for social order. Our results indicate that higher education liberalizes moral concerns for most students, but it also departs from the standard liberal profile by promoting moral absolutism rather than relativism. These effects are strongest for individuals majoring in the humanities, arts, or social sciences, and for students pursuing graduate studies. We conclude with a discussion of the implications of our results for work on political conflict and moral socialization.

The article is a polemics with those conceptions of the nature of morality which, based on an inquiry into the evolutionary origins of morality, locate its meaning in a society’s cooperation (backed by rules) for the purpose of joint success. I offer several counterexamples (cases of supererogation, moral attitudes towards animals) and use them to show the significance of construing morality independently of 1) the requirement of pro-sociality and 2) the objective (external) purpose that morality is supposed to fulfil.
