The epidemiology of dementia in Canada is not known. However, we report figures on the frequency of dementia in institutions in Ontario based upon the use of a multidimensional observation scale for the assessment of the elderly. These findings on institutionalized patients can be extrapolated to the whole elderly population, but the procedure is clearly too conservative by comparison with findings in other countries and in the light of the known occurrence of numbers of demented patients outside institutions. Ratios in different sutidies for the numbers of patients with dementia outside institutions and within institutions range from 1:1 to 6:1. Using a ratio of 2:1 and applying it to age specific population figures, a prevalence of dementia in Canada of 222,324 for those over 65 is obtained with a rate of 9.4% in that age group. When the figures projected in this way are compared with five epidemiological studies for the rate of dementia elsewhere, the Canadian figure which we have obtained ranks fourth out of six. This estimate provides potential figures on which to base the planning of services, provided that the inferential nature of the estimates is fully recognized.

ABSTRACTBackgroundDementia, a significant cause of disability and dependency among older adults. The growing population of the elderly in the Philippines is expected to increase the prevalence of dementia in the country.PurposeThis study aims to determine the prevalence of dementia in the elderly population of Barangay Bangkal, Makati City.MethodsDescriptive cross-sectional community-based study was conducted to determine the prevalence of dementia in the elderly population of Barangay Bangkal, Makati City, aged 60 years and above over one month from mid-October to mid-November 2019. Data was collected with help of Mini-Mental State Examination – Philippines version (MMSE-P) to determine the cognitive status and diagnose dementia in elderly population.ResultsA total of 266 elderly adults participated in the study. Representatives of the study population were male (59.0%), married (68.0%), with an income of less than 5,000 peso (51.1%), working (64.3%), and with high school education (42.1%). The average age of the study population was 68.02 (+ 6.76) years. The average MMSE score of the participants was 27.05 (+ 3.94). The prevalence of dementia in the sample was 18.8%. Age, income, and level of education were associated with the MMSE score (r□ = - 0.26, n = 266, p < 0.001, r□ = 0.23, n = 266, p < 0.001, and rs = 0.19, n = 266, p = 0.002, respectively). The findings for statistical significance do resonate with clinical significance as evident during administration of MMSE score.ConclusionAdvancing age increases the risk for cognitive decline while higher income and education level prevent or delays the onset of dementia. Collaborative management between the medical education faculty & students, researchers, and local state health officials might address dementia in the region.

Abstract. This study examines the psychometric properties of the IQCODE and its applicability in the Iranian elderly population. A group of 95 elderly patients with at least 4 years of formal education who fulfilled the criteria of DSM-IV-TR for dementia were examined by the MMSE and the AMTs. The Farsi version of the IQCODE was subsequently administered to their primary caregivers. Results showed a significant correlation ( p = .01) between the score of the questionnaire and the results of the MMSE ( r = −0.647) and AMTs ( r = −0.641). A high internal reliability of the questionnaire was confirmed by Cronbach’s alpha coefficient (α = 0.927) and test-retest reliability by correlation coefficient ( r = 0.81). This study found that the IQCODE has acceptable psychometric properties and can be used for evaluating the cognitive state in the elderly population of Iran.

Sacral insufficiency fractures (SIFs) are a cause of debilitating low back pain that is often difficult to diagnosis and manage. The diagnosis of SIF is often delayed due to inaccurately attributing symptoms to spondylosis, which is a commonly present in the elderly population where SIFs are most prevalent. Historically, treatment consisted of medical management and open reduction internal fixation reserved for severe cases. However, percutaneous sacroplasty has emerged as a minimally invasive treatment option which provides early pain relief without significant complications. The objective of this article is to raise awareness of SIFs and percutaneous sacroplasty as an effective and safe treatment method.

Geriatric syndromes consist of common clinical conditions affecting the elderly population. They lead to multiple, interacting medical and social deficits that increase the risk of adverse health outcomes, including dependence, institutionalization and also death. Research over the last few decades, in this area of medicine, has led to evolution of newer syndromes that pose a greater challenge to the physician. The present review aims to provide a synopsis of some of the newer syndromes like frailty, osteosarcopenia, sleep disorders and oropharyngeal dysphagia that have emerged in geriatric literature in recent times.
