Abscisic acid (ABA) plays an important role in regulating activities of antioxidant enzymes, hormone levels, accumulation of reactive oxygen species under stress. To understand the effects of exogenous ABA treatment on flooding tolerance at seedling stage in adzuki bean (Vigna angularis), the water-sensitive (WS) variety ‘Tianjinhong’ (TJH) and the water-tolerant (WT) variety ‘Longxiaodou 4’ (LXD 4) were foliar sprayed exogenous ABA with 20 μM, followed by flooding stress for 5 days under pot conditions. Our results revealed that under flooding stress at seedling stage, the contents of H2O2 and MDA, proline and soluble protein in adzuki bean leaves significantly increased, the contents of ABA, IAA and SA significantly increased, and the activities of SOD, POD and CAT also significantly increased. Flooding treatment for 5 days resulted in a significant decrease in single pot yield of LXD 4 by 8.40% and TJH by 9.91%. Foliar spray of 20 μM exogenous ABA could resist flooding stress, considerably increased the contents of proline and soluble protein, significantly decreased the contents of H2O2 and MDA, significantly increased the activities of SOD and POD, increased the contents of ABA and SA, and significantly inhibited the increase of IAA content in adzuki bean leaves. Spraying exogenous ABA significantly increased the yield of ‘LXD’ 4 by 6.95% after 4 days of flooding treatment, and ‘TJH’ by 4.46%. To sum up, there were significant differences in physiological stress among different varieties of adzuki bean under flooding stress, and spraying exogenous ABA could effectively alleviate the effects of flooding stress on physiology and yield of adzuki bean. The results of this study provided a theoretical basis for further studying the physiological mechanism of adzuki bean resisting flooding stress at seedling stage and improving the yield of adzuki bean under flooding stress. Thus, foliar spraying exogenous ABA effectively improved submergence tolerance by enhancing the activity of protective enzymes and osmoregulation. These results provided novel insights and were expected to aid in the development of more effective stress resistance cultivation methods in adzuki bean production.

The time-course for induction of growth, sucrose, and enzyme changes by Polaris (N,N-bis [phosphonomethyl] glycine), a commercial sugarcane ripener marketed by Monsanto Agricultural Products Company, was studied with early-juvenile sugarcane propagated by sand culture. The ripener was administered as an aqueous foliar spray containing 3000 p/m active ingredient. Plant samples were harvested just prior to treatment and from 8 h to 10 days thereafter. Acid invertase was significantly repressed within 24 hand sucrose increased in both leaf and expanding stem tissue within 48 h. The enzymes trehalase and ATP-ase declined in expanding stem tissue by the fourth and tenth day, respectively. Soluble protein was significantly repressed from the seventh day onward. Significant growth repression was first recorded at 7 days. The time-course of Polaris action is discussed in the context of spatially- and biochemically-discrete tasks to be performed within an early-juvenile model.

<p class="Abstract">The soil sickness of Adzuki bean [<em>Vigna angularis </em>(Willd.) Ohwi &amp; H. Ohashi] have been getting attention seriously under a continuously mono-cropping management-system in China. To investigate the allelopathy of rhizosphere soil and plant of Adzuki bean, culture dish and pot experiments were conducted. The compounds in the products were identified by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC).The aqueous extracts from rhizospheric soil and whole plant inhibited seed index (seed germination and seed potential) and plant growth under different degrees, and it showed concentration gradient effect on the inhibition of seed germination. Inhibition was stronger with increasment in extract concentration with the highest effect at 0.16 parts aqueous extract to 1 parts deionized water (0.16g·mL<sup>-1</sup>). The impact on growth varied among aqueous extracts from rhizospheric soil and the whole plant. Five phenolic compounds, cinnamic, phthalic, <em>p</em>-hydroxybenzoic, and isobutyricand glutaric acids, were detected from the rhizosphere soil and plant extract of Adzuki bean by HPLC method. Cinnamic, phthalic, and <em>p</em>-hydroxybenzoicacids were higher than that of the other phenolic acids. This result suggests that autotoxicity effects of phenolics on Adzuki bean probably happen in continuous mono-cropping systems.</p>

AbstractA set of 146 representative adzuki (Vigna angularis var. angularis and var. nipponensis) germplasm from six Asian countries with a tradition of adzuki bean production, together with an outgroup standard rice bean (Vigna umbellata), were analysed by amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) methodology using 12 informative primer pairs. A total of 313 unambiguous polymorphic bands were created. According to the dendrogram, using cluster analysis based on AFLP banding, 143 of the accessions were distinct and revealed enough genetic diversity for identification and classification of accessions within Vigna angularis. A neighbour-joining tree was generated using the newly developed Innan's nucleotide diversity estimate from the AFLP data. From analysis, seven distinct evolutionary groups, named ‘Chinese cultivated’, ‘Japanese cultivated’, ‘Japanese complex-Korean cultivated’, ‘Chinese wild’, ‘China Taiwan wild’, ‘Nepal- Bhutan cultivated’ and ‘Himalayan wild’, were detected. Nucleotide diversity with geographical distribution of each group is discussed, regarding the evolutionary relationships between wild and cultivated adzuki beans. The preliminary results indicated that cultivated adzuki beans have been domesticated from at least four progenitors with at least three geographical origins.
