Eight plants of Lamiaceae under subfamily Nepetoideae found in Manipur, India were selected for estimation of their polyphenolic compounds and free radical scavenging activity which is expressed on dry weight basis. In this present study, the total phenol and flavonoid contents as well as the free radical scavenging activity were studied using spectrophotometric method. The total phenol content was determined based on Folin-Ciocalteau reagent, flavonoid was determined by aluminium chloride spectrophotometric method and tannin by Folin Dennis Method. The free radical scavenging activity was determined by using DPPH radical which is expressed as IC50 (μg/ml). The total phenolic content varied from 21.39±0.927 to 46.28±0.543 mg/g, flavonoids content in the selected samples varied from 13.30±0.684 to 26.03±0.217 mg/g and tannin content varied from 8.72±0.160 to 17.04±0.206 mg/g. The free radical scavenging activity among the selected samples varied from 11.67±0.221 to 38.29±0.532 μg/ml. The correlation between the free radical scavenging activity with total phenol content (R2=0.511), with flavonoids (R2=0.241) and with tannin (R2=0.690) was calculated and maximum correlation value was found between tannin content and the free radical scavenging activity of the plant samples. The result supports that tannins were more responsible for free radical scavenging activity in the presently selected plants.

Abstract Cordia myxa is one of the important underutilized fruit plants suitable for arid and semi-arid regions of India having potential for commercial exploitation in vegetable and pickle industry. Fruits of four improved genotypes of Cordia myxa were analyzed for nutritional value, total phenol content and free radical scavenging activity. Acetone extracts from dried fruit samples were prepared to determine total phenol content and free radical scavenging activity using DPPH essay. The fruits harvested at 20 or 30 days after fruit set recorded higher crude fibre and crude protein as compared to at full ripening stage. The total phenol content was found highest in fruits harvested earliest irrespective of genotypes. The correlation coefficient between total phenol content and free radical scavenging activity of fruit extract was found positive and significant. The results suggest that the fruits of Cordia myxa should be harvested at 20 to 30 days after fruit set to get maximum benefits of its anti-oxidant and other nutritional properties.

Abstract Free Radical Scavenging Activity and Reducing Power of Akway (Drimys piperita Hook. f.) Bark ExtractsAkway (Drimys piperita Hook. f) was a woody and aromatic plant of winteraceae. This plant was used as traditional medical plant to heal malaria and to enhance vitality of body. Some studies were done to know bioactivity potency of akway extracts. D. piperita bark extract contains alkaloid, saponin, tanin, flavonoid, terpenoid and glycoside. The bark essential oil of the plant consists of lynalool, β-pinene, α-pinene, nerolidol and terpineol. Those compounds were exhibited high antioxidant activity. The objectives of this research were to determine total phenol and flavonoid of the extracts and its antioxidant capacity which was compared to antioxidant capacity of vitamin C. The assay of antioxidant capacity comprised of total phenol and flavonoid content, free radical scavenging activity, and reducing power. The aspiring prospect for bioactive metabolites has guided this very study to screen for antioxidant, antibacterial and cytotoxic activities of leaf, and bark extracts of Sundarbans mangrove plant, Sarcolobus globosus that might lead to novel drug, agrochemicals and neutraceuticals. Methanolic bark extract of S. globosus revealed the highest antioxidant properties among all the extracts in DPPH free radical scavenging activity (IC50:26.04 µg/ml), reducing efficiency (EC50:77.72 µg/ml), total phenolic content (47.25 ± 0.002mg GAE/g of extract), total flavonoid content (101 ± 0.003 mg GAE/g of extract) and total tannin content (93.5 ± 0.007 mg GAE/g of extract). Free radical scavenging activity and reducing power are significantly correlated with total phenol, flavonoid and tannin content. For evaluation of antibacterial activity, Gram positive bacteria (Bacillus megaterium, Staphylococcus aureus, and Micrococcus sp.) and Gram negative bacteria (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella typhi, Vibrio cholerae, Salmonella paratyphi, Pseudomonas sp., and Proteus sp.) were used in disc diffusion bioassay. Both extracts possessed significant (P < 0.05) inhibition competency against most of the bacteria. Test for cytotoxic activity was carried out by means of brine shrimp lethality bioassay and the chloroformic bark extract demonstrated greater cytotoxicity (LC5019.487 µg/ml) than standard vincristine sulphate (LC50 26.68 µg/ml). Further exploration is required focusing especially the bark extract that could be utilized as source and template for the synthesis of new potential pharma and agrochemicals.
