 Objective: The present study attempts to estimate the total flavonoid and phenolic content and to evaluate the free radical scavenging activity of the roots of Glycyrrhiza glabra Leguminosae family.Methods: The various extracts, namely, petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate, aqueous, and methanol of G. glabra root were evaluated by 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH), hydroxyl radicals, superoxide, 2,2’-azino-bis-3-ethyl benzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid (ABTS), and non-radicals such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and nitric oxide (NO) and assays. Total flavonoid and phenol contents were estimated as per the standard procedure.Results: The effect of the methanolic extract of G. glabra root was found to be more in scavenging the free radicals such as DPPH, hydroxyl, H2O2, superoxide, NO, and ABTS when compared to other extracts. The presence of flavonoids and phenol in the plant is responsible for the free radical scavenging effects.Conclusion: This in vitro assessment of the antioxidant properties of the various extracts of G. glabra roots validates and confirms its free-radical scavenging activity. Thus, the present data suggest that the G. glabra root extract can be used as a good source of natural antioxidants for health benefits.

Moringa oleifera (M. oleifera) has been known as a medicinal plant. The objectives of this study is to identify the chemical compositions of M. oleifera pods extracts and to evaluate its total phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant activity. The methodology of this study began with the collection of the pod's sample, drying and grinding the pods into powdered form. M. oleifera pods extracts were prepared by using methanol (MeOH), hexane, dichloromethane (DCM), and ethyl acetate (EtOAc) solvent which yielded respective residues. All extracts were subjected to Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) to identify its chemical compositions. Major compound found in hexane, DCM, EtOAc, and MeOH extracts were nonanoic acid (30.94 %), diisooctyl phthalate (89.45 %), benzoic acid, 4-hydroxy- (37.57 %) and octanoic acid (19.19 %), respectively. The TPC quantification was done via Folin-Ciocalteu method showed that EtOAc extract has the highest phenols content with 500.05 mg GAE/g. Generally, all extract contain moderate phenolic content. M. oleifera pods extracts were screened for the antioxidant activity via 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical. Hexane, DCM and EtOAc extracts exhibited good free radical scavenging activity with IC50 of 65.79 μg/mL, 74.93 μg/mL and 82.83 μg/mL, respectively. MeOH showed the lowest free radical scavenging activity with IC50 529.6 μg/mL. However, antioxidant activity of all extracts was low compared to standard, ascorbic acid (AA) with IC50 of 19.57 μg/mL. The presence of various bioactive constituents in the M. oleifera pods extracts might contributed to the antioxidant activity of the plant.

Several wild honey samples collected from seven different regions in Indonesia were investigated to determine their total phenolic content, flavonoid content, and free radical scavenging activity by analyzing the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DDPH) radical and phenolic profile. Rutin, (+)-catechin, ferulic acid, and galangin were found to be the major phenolic compounds of Indonesia wild honey. The total phenolic content significantly correlated with the total flavonoid content (p=0.000) and the percentage of DPPH radical scavenging activity (p=0.000). Results indicated that there are different polyphenol profiles among the different regions.

The present study was designed to investigate the phytochemical screening, the free radical scavenging activity and to determine the total phenolic content of methanolic extract and different solvent soluble fractions of Averrhoa bilimbi Linn. (Oxalidiaceae) fruits. The free radical scavenging activity was evaluated by analyzing the bleaching rate of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), and total phenolic content was determined by using Folin-Ciocalteau reagent, which results were expressed in gallic acid equivalent (mg of GAE/g of sample). The phytochemical screening revealed the potent source of different phytochemical constituents on different extractives including, phenol, flavonoid, tannin that are responsible for antioxidant action. In the determination of total phenolic content, different extractives showed a significant content of phenolic compounds ranging from 50.23-68.67 mg of GAE/g of extractive. The plant sample displayed significant DPPH free radical scavenging activity with highest IC50 value in crude methanolic extract (30.365 ?g/ml) followed by chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, pet-ether and aqueous soluble fractions having value of 32.852 ?g/ml, 36.708 ?g/ml, 50.35 ?g/ml, and 79.918 ?g/ml, respectively as opposed to that of the scavenging effects of BHT of 19.656 ?g/ml.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/icpj.v2i4.14058 International Current Pharmaceutical Journal, March 2013, 2(4): 92-96
