<p>The deterioration of environmental quality in the Sinos River basin is directly associated with the impacts of intense industrialization and urbanization. An integrated environmental assessment (IEA) was conducted in July and September of 2012, in areas along the sources of the EstânciaVelha/Portão, Pampa and Schmidt streams using physical, chemical and biological methods. The water in the three sampling sites was not proper for human consumption, presented a low toxic contamination index (TCI) and mesotrophic characteristics. One site was included in Class 4, and two, in Class 3, according to current legislation. The rapid assessment protocol (RAP) indicated a natural environmental condition for habitat diversity and environmental impact in the three sites. The <italic>Tradescantia pallida</italic> (Rose) D.R. Hunt var. <italic>purpurea</italic> Boom biomarker showed water genotoxicity in two of the sites. The integrated diagnosis of water quality in these streams is fundamentally important to ensure the sustainable management of water resources and their multiple uses, as well to estimate their contribution to pollution in this river basin.</p>

Abstract The Guandu River Basin is extremely important to state of Rio de Janeiro, as a water supplier of several municipalities. However, the malacological knowledge and environmental status is not well known to this basin. The aim of this paper is to present an inventory of freshwater mollusks, as well as an environmental assessment through a Rapid Assessment Protocol, of ten sampling sites at Guandu River basin in six municipalities (Piraí, Paracambi, Japeri, Seropédica, Queimados and Nova Iguaçu). Thirteen species of molusks were found, eight native (Pomacea maculata, Biomphalaria tenagophila, Gundlachia ticaga, Gundlachia radiata, Omalonyx matheroni, Diplodon ellipticus, Anodontites trapesialis and Eupera bahiensis) and five exotics (Melanoides tuberculata, Ferrissia fragilis, Physa acuta, Corbicula fluminea and Corbicula largillierti). The environmental analysis ranked most sites as “modified”. The expansion of exotic species with their associated negative effects, as well the gap in knowledge of native species calls attention to the need of future studies of biology and ecology of the species found.

Plan for the use and occupation of a watershed is essential to the proper use of water resources. The objective is to evaluate the environmental impacts on stream Estiva - Betim (MG), between July and September 2014 the implementation of the Rapid Assessment Protocol of Habitat Diversity in Excerpts from Watershed was performed, proposed by Callisto et al. (2002), adapted by the authors. This technique offers conditions to raise the environmental impact on stretches of waterways by evaluating some parameters. The 1,34Km studied were sectored into five sections and the data obtained with the Callisto Protocol, applied the Kruskal-Wallis test. The result of the sum of scores assigned to individual parameters reflects the stream preservation level. There was a significant difference in the median and weather condition testing, observed different impacts, such as: absence of riparian vegetation, erosion, presence of animal disease vectors, fires and illegal disposal of solid waste and wastewater in 1,34Km the stream Estiva.

ABSTRACT Water bodies located in coastal areas are subject to human pressures and the loss of environmental quality. The objective of this study was to evaluate the environmental quality of the river Papaquara through water quality and river landscape, using the Trophic Index (TRIX) and Rapid Assessment Protocol (RAP). The study was developed in the watershed located in the north of the island of Santa Catarina, Florianópolis – SC, whose population increase in the summer is around 280%. The Trophic Index and the Rapid Assessment Protocol were evaluated in the pre-summer period, summer and after-summer in seven sample points along the inner areas (higher population density), median and outside the Papaquara river, plus two points in affluent. The river Papaquara showed up in great stress state, is classified as eutrophic, 77% of the samples and changed in 50% of the sampled area, as the TRIX index and RAP, respectively. The internal area registered up eutrophic and impacted in all periods analyzed. The median area and the outer decreased their water quality, due to summer activity, while there was no change in environmental quality by RAP. A significant correlation between the indices used indicated that the RAP should be used with caution to describe the condition of water quality. This analysis has submitted be more appropriate when used in river scale as a whole, but not isolated segments.

Across Europe, Greenways upcycle disused railway infrastructure into non-motorised public infrastructure, often with limited consideration to potential ecological synergies. Pre-development, disused transport corridors become relatively undisturbed and potentially host diverse semi-natural habitats. The study objectives were 1) to produce a highly detailed and accurate dataset using remote sensing with rapid assessment techniques for ground truthing and 2) subsequently examine habitat diversity existing along a proposed Greenway. A 7000 ha study corridor was based on a disused railway proposed as a transfrontier Greenway connecting the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom. The study applied a rapid-assessment virtual validation techniquealongside remote sensing and accuracy assessment. Inter-relationship between seminatural habitat diversity and land-use intensification was examined. Remote sensing accuracies of 89% and 99% for a real and linear habitat classification were obtained. Degrees of land-use intensification were observed throughout the corridor, highlighting the importance of maintaining and enhancing remaining semi-natural habitat that exists along the proposed Greenway route. Through understanding the landscape matrix composition and semi-natural habitat diversity, European Greenwayscan achieve multi-functionality for ecosystem conservation, forming integral components of Green Infrastructure.

Traditionally, flood management has concentrated on providing protection against floods using technical measures, but there is currently an international shift towards a more integrated system of flood risk management, whereby flood risk is defined as the probability of flooding multiplied by the potential consequences. Climate change is a great challenge to sustainable development and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in Thailand. The main purpose of this paper is to highlight the challenges associated with the current situation and projected impacts of climate change on the disasters and the human environment in Thailand, to review and explore the potential of Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA), and to propose SEA in making informed decisions relevant to the implementation of the new adaptation framework in a flood management plan. Thus, current measures on how Thailand is responding to the recent impacts of climate change in river basin planning are presented. It is imperative that an appropriate environmental assessment tool, such as SEA be employed in making rational decisions regarding adaptation frameworks. SEA offers a structured and proactive environmental tool for integrating of climate change adaption into formulating Policies, Plans, and Programs (PPPs) among relevant sectors.
