A literature review and pictorial essay were developed to discuss the importance of knowing the main findings and locations of otosclerosis at multidetector computed tomography (MDCT). The authors performed a retrospective review of cases of otosclerosis diagnosed in their institution by means of high resolution multidetector computed tomography. Otosclerosis corresponds to otic capsule dysplasia characterized by metabolic derangement of its endochondral layer. Such condition constitutes a relevant cause of sensorineural hearing loss, affecting about 7% to 10% of the general population. The diagnosis is usually clinical, but imaging methods play a significant role in the anatomical detailing, differential diagnosis, surgical planning and evaluation of postoperative complications. Among such methods, the relevance of MDCT is highlighted. Radiologists should be familiar with the MDCT findings of otosclerosis, as well as with the temporal bone anatomy to assist in the appropriate clinical management of this disease.

The atrioventricular (AV) groove constitutes the anatomic space separating the atria and ventricles. The AV groove is often difficult to visualize at echocardiography, and suspected lesions can be further assessed with cardiac computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging. AV groove lesions may originate from within the AV groove or extend into this space from adjacent structures. The differential diagnosis for AV groove lesions is often wide, but a precise diagnosis can sometimes be made. This pictorial essay illustrates the magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography appearance of common and uncommon AV groove lesions, and attempts to provide a logical framework for differential diagnosis when confronted with a known or suspected lesion at cross-sectional imaging.

The recent introduction of multidetector computed tomography scanners has significantly improved computed tomography angiographic (CTA) applications, especially for the evaluation of medium- and small-arterial structures. CTA of the superior mesenteric artery has been reported previously. However, there have been few systematic and detailed reviews of the superior mesenteric artery pathologies that use CTA. The purpose of this pictorial essay is mainly to review the various superior mesenteric artery pathologies at CTA with our own experiences.

AbstractThis paper describes the abnormality of a large internal auditory meatus (LIAM). Computed tomography (CT) scans show the otic capsule to be affected by a widened, bulbar internal auditory meatus with loss of or reduction of the bony wall dividing the lateral fundus of the meatus from the cochlea. The vestibule is abnormally dilated. We report five cases of children with LIAM and profound hearing loss. Three of these children are girls and two children were boys. Three had congenital progressive hearing loss, one of these had an accompanying large vestibular aqueduct and dysplasia of the cochlea. Two patients had had meningitis resulting in profound loss.

Abstract The introduction of functional endoscopic sinus surgery in the 1980s brought about a drastic change in the treatment of patients with rhinosinusitis, improving quality of life through the removal of pathological processes or anatomical variations that obstruct the drainage pathways of the paranasal sinuses. However, despite the routine use of computed tomography in the anatomical evaluation of the paranasal sinuses, most radiological reports still do not provide sufficient information to guide the surgical planning. The objective of this pictorial essay was to demonstrate, through computed tomography, the main anatomical variations of the paranasal sinuses, the recognition of which is fundamental for preoperative planning, in order to avoid treatment failure and iatrogenic complications.
