The Chingandzha flora comes from the volcanic-sedimentary deposits of the Chingandzha Formation (the Okhotsk-Chukotka volcanic belt, North-East of Russia). The main localities of the Chingandzha flora are situated in the Omsukchan district of the Magadan Region: on the Tap River (basin of the middle course of the Viliga River), on the Kananyga River, near the mouth of the Rond Creek, and in the middle reaches of the Chingandzha River (basin of the Tumany River). The Chingandzha flora includes 23 genera and 33 species. Two new species (Taxodium viligense Golovn. and Cupressinocladus shelikhovii Golovn.) are described, and two new combinations (Arctopteris ochotica (Samyl.) Golovn. and Dalembia kryshtofovichii (Samyl.) Golovn.) are created. The Chingandzha flora consists of liverworts, horsetails, ferns, seed ferns, ginkgoaleans, conifers, and angiosperms. The main genera are Arctop teris, Osmunda, Coniopteris, Cladophlebis, Ginkgo, Sagenoptepis, Sequoia, Taxodium, Metasequoia, Cupressinocladus, Protophyllocladus, Pseudoprotophyllum, Trochodendroides, Dalembia, Menispermites, Araliaephyllum, Quereuxia. The Chingandzha flora is distinct from other floras of the Okhotsk-Chukotka volcanic belt (OCVB) in predominance of flowering plants and in absence of the Early Cretaceous relicts such as Podozamites, Phoenicopsis and cycadophytes. According to its systematic composition and palaeoecological features, the Chingandzha flora is similar to the Coniacian Kaivayam and Tylpegyrgynay floras of the North-East of Russia, which were distributed at coastal lowlands east of the mountain ridges of the OCVB. Therefore, the age of the Chingandzha flora is determined as the Coniacian. This flora is assigned to the Kaivayam phase of the flora evolution and to the Anadyr Province of the Siberian-Canadian floristic realm. The Chingandzha flora is correlated with the Coniacian Aleeky flora from the Viliga-Tumany interfluve area and with other Coniacian floras of the OCVB: the Chaun flora of the Central Chukotka, the Kholchan flora of the Magadan Region and the Ul’ya flora of the Ul’ya Depression.

An exploratory examination has been made of three different kinds of hardpans found in humus podzols (Humods and Aquods) of the coastal lowlands of southern Queensland, by means of slaking tests, a reactive aluminium test, acid oxalate and pyrophosphate extractions and electron microscopy. Samples from three indurated layers exposed by erosion or sand-mining in large coastal dunes were included for comparison. The investigation confirmed that, a pan in a bleached A2 (albic E) horizon is most likely caused by particle packing and that a pan in a black B2h (spodic) horizon is cemented by an aluminium-organic complex. Yellow-brown pans underlying black organic pans (spodic horizons) were found to be cemented by both a proto-imogolite/allophane complex and an organic substance. An inorganic reactive Al complex differing from the proto-imogolite allophane recorded in the overlying giant podzols appeared to be main cement of three indurated layers in the nearby coastal sand dunes. Mechanical disturbance of the pans, e.g. ripping, is unlikely to improve drainage and effective soil depth in the long term, because the disturbed zones are expected to be re-sealed by packed particles or by the aluminium-organic complex cement.

This study aimed to assess the economic and commercial performance of the Mangalarga Marchador horse breeding, and production costs in the Rio de Janeiro. Data was collected from the ABCCMM archives and from associated breeders, selected through stratified sampling by the mesoregions of the State of Rio de Janeiro. The main means of marketing the animals is selling on the farm. The average of horse’s sale per stud farm in the Rio de Janeiro is 14.92/year with the average of R$16,628.46/horse, generating an estimated sale at the farms of around R$192,026,783.88/year. The sale of mating (8.77 mating/year) and weaned foals (5.44 foals/year) contributed to the largest volume of sales at the stud farms. Donor mares (R$57,318,908.50) and mares (R$42,958,357.20) represented the highest in terms of market value throughout the Rio de Janeiro. The Coastal Lowlands mesoregion had the highest average of animals sold per stud farm/year (40.57 animals) and the Central Fluminense mesoregion had the lowest average (25.39 animals). The average commercialization per farm/year corresponds to R$385,667.90 and the average total value traded in the Rio de Janeiro is R$465,880,252.32/year. The average is 6.52 hired employees, which is equivalent to an average monthly labor gross cost of R$11,286.00. Rio de Janeiro employs around 5,584 people directly, the greatest numbers in the Metropolitan mesoregion (1,833 employees), and the lowest concentration in the Northern Fluminense mesoregion (530 employees). Together with the production costs, Mangalarga Marchador horse’s business turns over more than R$650 million per year in the Rio de Janeiro.

Abstract. In the Houston, Texas region, groundwater use is regulated by the Harris-Galveston Subsidence District (District) because of historical regional subsidence from groundwater development. The District regulates groundwater production in the Coastal Lowlands Aquifer System (CLAS) to mitigate subsidence through the implementation of District Groundwater Regulatory Plan. The District has successfully reduced groundwater pumping as a percent of demand regionally while controlling subsidence through the implementation of alternative water supplies. Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) is an alternative water supply strategy that provides a means to store water underground and increase water supply more cost effectively than traditional storage expansion strategies. Groundwater users in the District are interested in the many potential benefits of ASR as a water supply strategy. Little is known about the potential effects on compaction and land surface subsidence resulting from ASR operations. Recognizing this, the District funded research on the potential subsidence risk associated with ASR. Two hypothetical, though representative, ASR projects were developed and analysed: (1) an industrial ASR project meant to provide water supply during a drought of record (DOR), and (2) a municipal ASR project designed to provide an annual municipal summer peaking water supply. Simulations of groundwater hydraulics and subsidence were performed at three potential locations within the CLAS to provide insight into variability associated with location and aquifer depth. Theoretical simulations confirmed the potential for subsidence associated with the application of ASR in the CLAS, although operating an ASR for summer peaking needs has less potential risk of subsidence than the DOR scenario in the scenarios simulated. The study simulations provide insight into how an ASR project may be designed and operated to minimize compaction and potential subsidence. Based on this study, ASR operated to address summer peaking showed the greatest potential to reduce additional compaction verses sourcing all water from groundwater. This theoretical study provides a basis for future research on subsidence associated with ASR and provides a framework for consideration for the regulation of ASR within the District.

Objetivo: Analisar a assistência ao parto das mulheres assistidas em um hospital público da baixada litorânea do Rio de Janeiro. Métodos: Trata-se de um estudo descritivo, de natureza quantitativa, de delineamento transversal, que utilizou a técnica documental retrospectiva. Os dados da pesquisa são relativos aos partos que ocorrem na instituição durante o período de janeiro a junho de 2015. Resultados: Dos 796 partos, 352 (44,22%) ocorreram por via vaginal e 444 (55,77%) por via abdominal. Constatou-se que as primíparas e as mulheres com mais de 35 anos foram submetidas com maior frequência a cesárea. Das 352 parturientes que tiveram parto vaginal, 164 (46,59%) tiveram a episiotomia realizada. Conclusão: A instituição apresenta alto índice de partos cirúrgicos e realização de intervenções obstétricas, tais como a episiotomia, sendo realizada de forma rotineira e sem indicação adequada. A assistência encontra-se desumanizada e em desacordo com as atuais recomendações e evidências cientificas.
