The inaugural conference of the comics studies society, held in August 2018 at the University of Illinois, Urbana, was the most professionally diverse conference I've ever attended. There were presentations by tenure-track faculty members, non-tenuretrack faculty members, graduate students, and independent scholars; by people from four-year institutions, community colleges, and high schools; by literary critics, art historians, media scholars, research librarians, and working artists. Everywhere one felt the energy of a new field of study coming together, of institutionalization in a good sense: the gathering of past work to create a critical canon, the debate over methodology, the effort to establish priorities for moving forward as a discipline. he emotional palette that this event produced, at least for me, was an odd combination of excitement and melancholy—melancholy because, at a moment when traditional humanistic disciplines are having their support cut, it's hard to imagine a new ield getting anything like the resources or hires it needs to survive, let alone thrive.

This chapter focuses on the life and accomplishments of Africanist anthropologist William Shack. Known to all as Shack, he had a career that included field research in Ethiopia and Swaziland, teaching in African universities as well as at the University of Illinois and the University of California, Berkeley. This chapter can offer hope and encouragement to graduate students of anthropology who may be in departments that are not as supportive or encouraging as they might wish, because William Shack faced major obstacles in completing his Ph.D. Despite the obstacles he faced, Shack went on to a distinguished career as an anthropologist and university administrator.

The paper will cover all aspects of the change journey: engaging with relevant stakeholders, the recruitment and retention of high quality faculty members, the review and revision of the curriculum, improving the quality and quantity of research output and publications, developing centers of research excellence, raising the level of funding for both research and teaching, expanding the number of graduate students, developing an eminent visiting professors' program, the internationalization of the university, strengthening governance and administration and raising the international profile of the university. It will set out, in detail, the strategies and processes that were developed to realize the vision, as well as the challenges and problems encountered, and steps taken to address these challenges and problems. Mistakes were made along the way and the lessons that can be learnt for any university that aims to be involved in the ranking exercises.

Technical writing required of employees in business and industry has been investigated, but the writing demands on graduate students have not been systematically surveyed. To find out what kinds of writing are required of graduate engineering students, twenty-five engineering faculty members from the Engineering College at the University of Florida listed the kinds of writing assigned to graduate classes during the academic year 1979–80. Since the faculty members were asked to rank-order the writing kinds from most frequent to least frequent, the Friedman analysis of variance and the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks test were used to test for differences in the rank ordering. The tests showed that faculty assigned examinations, quantitative problems, and reports most frequently, that they assigned homework and papers (term and publication) less frequently, and that they assigned progress reports and proposals least frequently.

The advising literature confirms the graduate student–graduate advisor relationship as the most important factor in graduate student success. To better understand the characteristics of graduate advisors that students find most helpful, we conducted a grounded theory study with a constructivist design that involved a qualitative textual analysis of Outstanding Graduate Advisor of the Year Award nominations from MD-PhD students enrolled in the Medical Scholars Program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Five major themes emerged from this analysis, and the results indicate that students perceive the following graduate-advisor characteristics to be most helpful: demonstrated care for students, accessibility, role models in professional and personal matters, individually tailored guidance, and proactive integration of students into the profession. On 17–18 April 2004, the Midwest Labor and Working-Class History Colloquium (MLWCH) met at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Formed in 1994, MLWCH is a consortium of graduate students and faculty connected to the Midwest either through research interest or institutional affiliation. MLWCH exists to foster scholarly exchange amongst the field's future and current practitioners, provide an informal setting for students to present and receive feedback on their research, and nurture the collegial relationships that are essential to the study of history. This year's colloquium brought together eighteen graduate students and featured three events: an open forum on the question “Is it Labor or Working-Class History?” two roundtable discussions on participants' research, and a faculty-led roundtable on professional development.

The collaboration described in this chapter differs somewhat from that in other chapters. A university in Texas—Sam Houston State University—established a forensic training clinic staffed by doctoral trainees in clinical psychology and supervised by faculty members. This clinic offered services to courts in the region, primarily involving the evaluation of individuals involved in the criminal justice system on issues such as competence to stand trial, sentencing for individuals committing sexual offenses, mental state at the time of the offense, and others. This yielded valuable specialized training opportunities for graduate students, strong evaluations at a reasonable rate for courts, and an opportunity to generate funding for the university and the training program. The “collaboration,” therefore, was between the university and the court system rather than a state department of mental health; however many of the developmental and operational considerations were comparable to those described in other chapters.

In order to develop programs in education, technology transfer and research to achieve these goals, a partnership between the University of Minnesota, industries and government was established. The Center for Interfacial Engineering was born and the strategic plan is shown in Figure 1. Some statistics for this year are as follows. The budget is $6.5 M of which 41% is contributed by the NSF, 25% by the University of Minnesota and 34% by 54 industrial members. Sixty four faculty members from 6 departments are involved in the Center with 18 core CIE faculty. There are 244 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, 41 undergraduates and 69 industrial researchers directly involved in center projects.

The recent theoretical turn in musicology has made the discipline more relevant, both within the university itself, and in the larger society within which it is situated. I consider what this development may mean for younger scholars, both as graduate students and as new faculty members, and explore the paradox that critical theory is often attacked for its impenetrability, yet has allowed us to communicate more easily with our colleagues in other disciplines. Finally, I argue that the primary aim for music study in the twenty-first century should be an ethical one: the creation of whole, musical human beings, literate in, and accustomed to thinking about, musics, plural, rather than Music.

In April 2008, the University of Illinois-Chicago hosted the Fifth Sloan-C Workshop on Blended Learning and Higher Education. This workshop attracted 180 educational leaders, faculty members, instructional designers and researchers who discussed, shared and considered effective practices in the design and delivery of blended learning environments. Presentations on best practices, lessons learned, and research on the phenomenon of blended learning stoked the discussion for two days.The theme of the workshop, Blending with Purpose, attempted to focus the discussions on the importanceof designing blended learning courses and programs with specific educational goals and objectives in mind. The theme developed out of a growing concern that many faculty were using the latest technology simply for the sake of the using technology without carefully considering the pedagogical benefits and “purpose”. The organizing committee for the workshop also understood that blended learning was not just a faculty-driven activity but needed support and guidance from the administration and instructional designers. As a result, three areas of focus helped organize the workshop activities namely: administration, pedagogy, and evaluation/assessment.

The purpose of this study was to examine the use of print serials by students and faculty members of a satellite campus of the University of Education, Winneba. Specifically, this study sought to determine the level of awareness and use of serials among faculty and graduate students, and how this affect their perception of the value of print serials in teaching and learning. The study made use of survey research methods through the use of questionnaires. The population of the study consisted of 165 faculty members and 97 graduate students, with an eventual return rate of 66% each, respectively. The findings of the study revealed that both faculty and graduate students were, relatively, aware of the print serial collection in the library. However, despite this awareness, they used print serials, relatively, less frequently. Again, the study established that both faculty and students have significant positive perceptions on the usefulness of print serials in their teaching, learning and research roles. We recommend to librarians to create awareness of print serial collections while updating the collection, and enhance the positive perception of print serials by demonstrating, through outcome measures, how the use of print serials can be beneficial to the academic and research community.
