مبادرة لإنشاء مراكز للتميز البحثي بجامعة أم درمان الإسلامية This paper presents an initiative to establish centers for research excellence with Omdurman Islamic University, which is one of the means developed to overcome the problem of financing the scientific research and shortage of researchers. The paper also mention the history of the scientific research in the Sudan and the obstacles facing it and presents the experience of some countries in overcoming the problem of financing the scientific research. The paper then explain the concept of centers of excellence and relevance as a means of addressing the issue of funding the scientific research. The paper then mention the goals, benefits and conditions for success of excellence centers and provides examples of some of the centers of excellence in universities. Performance indicators for such centers were then mentioned and the paper concludes by making recommendations to implement this initiative

Abstract sKuakini Medical Center (Kuakini) is establishing an interdisciplinary Hawai’i-based Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) for clinical and translational research on aging. - Specific Aim 1: Create a world class, innovative, interdisciplinary Center for Translational Research on Aging by building on the existing rare and valuable Kuakini Honolulu Heart Program (Kuakini HHP) and its related studies and research infrastructure. - Specific Aim 2: Advance the genomic, biological and clinical science of aging, and enhance the world class character of our Center, by enlisting accomplished senior scientists to mentor promising Hawaii-based new investigators in interdisciplinary aging research and career development. - Specific Aim 3: Elevate the capacity of our Center by: i) creating a state-of-the-art Clinical and Translational Core, and ii) collaborating with other Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence. This presentation will briefly introduce the Center and discuss its aims, research strategy, and future plans.

We announce the creation of a new body within the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine called the Strategic Council for Research Excellence, Integrity, and Trust, charged with advancing the overall health, quality, and effectiveness of the research enterprise across all domains that fund, execute, disseminate, and apply scientific work in the public interest. By promoting the alignment of incentives and policies, adoption of standard tools, and implementation of proven methods, the Strategic Council seeks to optimize the excellence and trustworthiness of research for the benefit of society.

The contribution examines whether systematic research assessments go hand in hand with a dedifferentiation of disciplinary cultures. The case of application for this question is the British Research Excellence Framework (REF). The analysis reveals that history departments in the upper rank groups of the REF publish first and foremost articles in high impact journals, while those departments that are not rewarded by the assessment publish mainly contributions to edited volumes. The contribution concludes that research assessments that are generically applied across disciplines and that are both symbolically and materially efficacious go hand in hand with a dedifferentiation of disciplinary cultures in terms of publication activities.

The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) mandates that its Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) and Institutional Development Award Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) institute formal mentoring programs to promote the core program objective of junior investigator development. Despite this NIGMS requirement, and the many career-related benefits associated with mentoring, few tools exist for purposes of rigorously evaluating COBRE and INBRE mentoring programs. The purpose of this project was to develop a mentoring assessment tool to aid in the evaluation of COBRE and INBRE mentoring programs. In study 1, a list of items comprising the tool was created via a multiphase item generation process based on input received from subject matter experts within the Cognitive and Neurobiological Approaches to Plasticity Center. In study 2, feedback about this tool was solicited from 78 grant directors, mentees, and mentors representing 21 unique COBRE programs and 8 unique INBRE programs from across the United States. The results provide initial evidence that this tool possesses suitable psychometric properties, is a flexible instrument with many potential uses, and represents a valuable resource for helping evaluate COBRE and INBRE mentoring programs. Having a tool for evaluating mentoring can help promote the grant success and career development of junior investigators in COBRE and INBRE programs and help program directors develop more sustainable research centers.
