The first data are presented about the Sciomyzidae of Iturup, the largest of the Kuril Islands. A total of ten species are recorded. Limnia setosa Yano is recorded for the first time from Russia; Tetanocera montana Day and T. phyllophora Melander are recorded for the first time from the Kuril Islands. Photographs, comments on diagnostic characters and adult habitats of poorly known species are given.

Results of cherry salmon juveniles rearing at Reidovo fish farm on Iturup Island during two annual cycles of cultivation are analyzed. Different variants of the breeders selection, feeding, preventive treatment, and release were tested. The breeders were caught in the river mouth and near the fish farm. Mass mortality of young fish in the first and second years was avoided by decreasing of their density and other preventive measures. Minced fish was used as a food for them that is less expensive in compare with a combined fodder. The best diet for the second year of rearing was the minced pink salmon with the daily ration of 2 % of the juveniles body weight; it provided a significant decrease of mortality and enhanced their growth. After 2-year rearing, percentage of females, anadromous males, and dwarf males was 42.1, 36.3, and 21.6 %, respectively. Their weights were similar, though a group of fast-growing males was found among the dwarfs. The mass of ovaries varied from 13 to 46 mg in close dependence on females’ body weight (r = 0.81). Before the release, the ovaries of all females contained oocytes of similar size (varied in 2–4 times) at the final stage of previtellogenesis. Number of the oocytes per transverse section varied from 4.7 to 32.3, on average for 5 cuts and their diameter varied from 164.3 to 279.2 mm and did not correlate with the females body weight. The mass of dwarf males’ testes varied from 14 to 488 mg in dependence on their body weight (r = 0.78). The elder oocytes of females would mature in a year, and majority of dwarf males would reach the maturity in autumn of the current year.

The article presents new petrogeochemical data on the Middle Miocene-Pliocene volcanic rocks from central part of Iturup Island (Great Kurile Chain). It is shown that volcanism of the Middle Miocene-Early Pliocene age in the central part of the Iturup Island took place in a suprasubduction setting. The distribution of high field strength elements (HFSE) and their ratio in the basaltoids indicate their formation upon partial melting of the depleted upper mantle, while the enrichment of rocks with large ionic lithophilic elements (LILE) indicates both a fluid mantle additive introduced into the melts during the evolution of primary magma and the participation of a low-temperature suprasubduction fluid. The established differences in the composition of the basaltoids of the frontal and rear zones due to the limited number of analyzed samples are considered preliminary. Thus, basaltoids in the rear zone are distinguished by higher concentrations of Th, Pb, HFSE (Nb, Zr, Y, Hf), relative enrichment in LREE, pronounced negative Zr and Hf anomalies, and positive Eu.

A plant-collecting expedition to Iturup and Sakhalin Islands, Russian Federation, occurred between 21 July and 12 Sept. 2003. Actinidia, Rubus, Ribes, and Vaccinium, as well as seven accessions of strawberries, Fragaria L., were collected. Among them, a wild strawberry, Fragaria iturupensis Staudt, was collected on the eastern slope of Atsonupuri Volcano, Iturup Island, at 630 and 650 m elevation. This species was similar in habit, leaf color and overall appearance to the American strawberry species F. virginiana Mill. Fruits were bright red, oblate spherical, about 1.4 cm in diameter, and had exerted achenes. The native distribution of this species was limited to the middle elevation of the slope of this volcano, and only on Iturup Island. Chromosome counts indicated that these plants were octoploid. Initial DNA fingerprinting aligned this sample with other octoploid species. In addition to this species, samples of F. yezoensis H. Hara (syn. F. nipponica Makino) were collected on Kuibyshewskii Bay of Cape Otlivnoy, Iturup, and near Ujno-Sakhalinsk City, Sakhalin Island. F. iinumae Makino was observed in Ogon'ki Village, Sakhalin Island. This report confirmed the existence of F. iturupensis, the only known native Asian octoploid strawberry, and documented its limited range. Seeds of these strawberry species are available for research by request from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, National Clonal Germplasm Repository in Corvallis.
