Aim. To clarify the specific influence of an adhesive system («Single Bond Universal») on contents, physical and chemical parameters of oral liquid to confirm its safety for use in common dental practice. Methods. A series of in vitro experiments of 5 and 20 seconds of 3 ml oral liquid photopolymerization of 23 dentally and generally healthy subjects aged 18-25 years were performed. Salivary acidity (pH), redox potential, structure, absorption specters, membrane toxicity parameters were assessed. Results. An adhesive system shifted the pH to 6.02±0.21, changed the balance of oxidized and reduced substances with redox potential shift without influencing on salivary structuring. «Filtek Ultimate» and «Filtek Bulk Fill» nanocomposites did not altered the acid-base balance, pH was stable and within the control ranges, redox potential was significantly reduced, mainly by «Filtek Ultimate» (3.6 times lower compared to control parameters), it has also increased the oral liquid structuring by 22,7%. Adhesive and nanocomposites had different effect on the contents of nucleated cells materials (nucleotides, nucleosides, purine catabolites) in oral fluid, decreasing the contents of thymine, cytosine nucleotides and their derivatives, confirmed by absorption characteristics of oral fluid after the incubation. It was found that «Single Bond Universal» adhesive system, «Filtek Ultimate» and «Filtek Bulk Fill» nanocomposites also change the physical and chemical parameters of oral liquid and have a membrane-toxic effect on red blood cells. Conclusion. Biotesting of specified stomatologic materials showed that they are not completely bioinert.

Abstract Background This in-vitro study aimed to investigate the effect of two different antibacterial disinfectants on the microleakage performance of newly developed bulk-fill composite, bonded to different tooth structures. Methods Class V cavities were prepared in 30 sound premolar teeth, with enamel occlusal margins (OM) and dentin cervical margins (CM). Two disinfectants, 2% chlorhexidine gluconate (CHX) and Listerine Miswak (ListM), were used. Teeth were divided into three groups (n = 10): G1, Control; G2, CHX; and G3, ListM. Disinfectants were applied to the cavity preparation walls after they were etched with 35% phosphoric acid. The Single Bond Universal adhesive system was then used, and teeth were restored with Filtek One Bulk Fill composite. Samples were examined, after thermocycling aging, by stereomicroscopy for the evaluation of marginal dye penetration. Results The highest mean microleakage score was reported in the CM of G1 (2.60 ± 1.174), which was significant compared with that of G2 only (p = 0.02). OM in G1 showed no microleakage, with no significant differences found among groups (χ2 = 1.39, p = 0.50). No significant differences were reported between G2 and G3 (p = 0.45 OM; p = 0.17 CM). Conclusions Cavity pretreatment with CHX is not significantly different to pretreatment with CHX. In contrast, CHX improved the cervical marginal seal as compare to the control group (G1).

The aim of this study was to evaluate the shear bond strength (SBS) of two universal adhesives (Universal Single Bond and All Bond Universal) and a two-step self-etch adhesive system (Clearfil SE Bond) to dentine at various temperatures. Materials and Methods: One hundred and twenty dentin specimens were divided randomly to 12 groups, according to adhesive systems (Universal Single Bond and All Bond Universal, Clearfil SE Bond)  and temperature  ( 4ºC, 20 ºC, 36ºC, 55ºC) used. Dentin specimens were prepared (n :10, adhesives were applied, and composite cylinders were polymerized. Statistical analysis of the SBS data was performed using Two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey’s Honestly Significant Differences post-hoc test. Results: The Clearfil SE Bond was shown to have higher SBS than the universal adhesives at all temperatures; however, there was no statistically significant difference (P>0.05). In both groups, the lowest SBS values were observed in the samples at 4°C while the highest SBS values were observed in the samples at 55°C. In this case, there was a statistically significant difference (P<0.05). Conclusions: The results suggest that the effectiveness of an adhesive may increase if it is preheated at 36°C or above before use instead of being used immediately after removal from the refrigerator or at room temperature.

The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate quantitatively the microleakage in class V cavities restored with one-bottle and self-etching adhesive systems with and without previous acid etching. Two one-bottle adhesive systems (Single Bond and Prime & Bond 2.1) and one self-etching adhesive system (Clearfil Mega Bond) were used in this study. One hundred and twenty sound human premolar teeth were randomly divided into 6 groups, and 20 class V restorations were prepared in the root dentin to test each bonding system. Each bonding system was used with and without acid etching. Specimens were prepared, dyed with 2% methylene blue, sectioned, triturated, and evaluated with an absorbance spectrophotometer test in order to quantify the infiltrated dye. Results were statistically evaluated by ANOVA and Tukey-Kramer test. No statistically significant differences were found among the adhesive systems when no etching agent was used. However, the Single Bond adhesive system showed statistically significant lower microleakage means than Clearfil Mega Bond and Prime & Bond 2.1 when 37% phosphoric acid was used. Single Bond and Clearfil Mega Bond adhesive systems presented similar behavior when the manufacturers' instructions were followed.
