Irish science fiction is a relatively unexplored area for Irish Studies, a situation partially rectified by the publication of Jack Fennell's Irish Science Fiction in 2014. This article aims to continue the conversation begun by Fennell's intervention by analysing the work of Belfast science fiction author Ian McDonald, in particular King of Morning, Queen of Day (1991), the first novel in what McDonald calls his Irish trilogy. The article explores how McDonald's text interrogates the intersection between science, politics, and religion, as well as the cultural movement that was informing a growing sense of a continuous Irish national identity. It draws from the discipline of Science Studies, in particular the work of Nicholas Whyte, who writes of the ways in which science and colonialism interacted in late nineteenth and early twentieth-century Ireland.

The mindful elite attracted new high-status sympathizers in targeted organizations by using their professional symbolic power, social status, and social skill to build legitimacy for meditation and other contemplative practices. In this chapter the author builds upon scholarship on legitimation by identifying the various kinds of legitimation the contemplatives are able to secure. These different kinds of legitimacy are interrelated and build upon each other over time, creating a cultural movement that is increasingly difficult to derail. However, in building their base among a privileged coterie of social, economic, and intellectual elites, the contemplatives risk losing touch with ordinary people and the issues of inequality that affect them. This weakens the contemplatives’ ability to stand by and implement direct social reforms to influence root causes of the issues they care about, such as rising inequality, greed, and materialism.

AbstractAdult comics are a new medium in the Arab world. This article is the first in-depth study of their emergence and role within Arab societies. Focused on Egypt, it shows how adult comics have boldly addressed political and social questions. Seeing them as part of a broader cultural efflorescence in Egypt, I argue that, against patriarchal authoritarianism, adult comics have expressed an alternative ideology of tolerance, civic rights and duties, individualism, creativity, and criticism of power. Specifically, they present a damning critique of Egypt's authoritarian order, as well as of the marginalization of women and broader gender dynamics in Egyptian society. Through frank humor, a playful style, and explicit graphics, they give voice to the concerns of young Egyptians. Connecting comics to other art forms such as music, graffiti, and political cartoons, I situate them within a critical cultural movement that came to the fore with the Egyptian uprising of 2011.

This paper examines the dynamics within the encounter between identity formation of a minority group living in West Java, Indonesia and the arrival of modern tourism in the area. It studies whether an indigenous group endowed by various amazing tourism resources engages with tourism as a tactics to deal with policies excluding them for years. Contrasting to Friedman’s study on the early Hawaiian cultural movement which was anti-tourism, Kasepuhan Banten Kidul community living on Cipta gelar, an enclave area under Halimun-Salak National Park’s control,takes tourism as the opportunity to resist various dominations and to strengthen its cultural identity. Findings from participant’s observations and indepth interview show some changes are also inevitable. Engaging with modern tourism means the readiness to accommodate the arrival of various outside elements. However, the strategy has led local government to declare the area as part of major tourism destination in 2007. It means Sunda Wiwitan, an indigenous religion practiced by the community which is not officially recognized as a legal religion in Indonesia can be freely practiced in order to promote tourism. In this case, tourism is seen as one opportunity to establish a form of social movement in resisting dominations. Borrowing De Certeu, the community might have produced silent productivity to deal with larger authorities, including with its consequences in various ways.
