Lipid was extracted from the lipid containing muscle of Liner silver grunter (Pomadasys hasta) by solvent extraction and then purified by standard method. The physico-chemical properties of lipid sample were determined and compared with those of other standard fats and oils. Fatty acid composition of the lipid sample was investigated by Thin Layer Chromatographic (TLC) examination. Gas Liquid Chromatographic (GLC) examination was performed by the methyl esters mixture prepared from the lipid sample. The de-oiled muscle of the fish was studied for the determination of ash content, fiber content, moisture content and protein content. The lipid containing selected muscle was analyzed quantitatively for the determination of percentages of protein, cholesterol and minerals (N, P, K, Ca, and Na). The lipid containing muscle was also analyzed for the determination of the amount of eleven metals by using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometric method. The lipid sample was evaluated by microbial activity (bacterial activity against nine bacteria and fungal activity against seven fungi).

Abstract A rapid gas-liquid chromatographic (GLC) procedure has been developed for the determination of docosenoic acids in fats and oils. The method involves conversion of a known weight of oil to methyl esters using sodium methoxide-methanol, with a known weight of methyl tetracosanoate used as an internal standard. After acidification and extraction into hexane, esters are analyzed by GLC on a diethylene glycol succinate column. The percentage of docosenoic acids is calculated from the docosenoate and internal standard peak areas. The method is particularly suited to the determination of low levels (<5%) of docosenoic acids.

Abstract A procedure is described for the isolation and cleanup of hexachlorobenzene (HCB) and mirex in fats and oils for gas-liquid chromatographic (GLC) analysis. The fat or oil is distributed on unactivated Florisil, and the HCB and mirex are eluted with acetonitrile. The pesticides are then partitioned into petroleum ether. Elution through activated Florisil with methylene chloride-hexane (20+80) is used for the final cleanup. HCB and mirex are then measured by GLC, using the appropriate electron capture conditions with a 15% OV-210 column for HCB and a 3% OV-101 column for mirex. The method demonstrates recoveries greater than 90% for HCB and mirex and allows screening at or below the 0.1 ppm level in fats with a 3 mg fat injection.

Soil pit digging and their precise study is a decision making tool to assess history and future of soil management of a particular area. Thus, the present study was carried out to differentiate soil physico-chemical properties in the different layers of excavated pit of the National Maize Research Program, Rampur, Chitwan, Nepal. Eight pits were dug randomly from three blocks at a depth of 0 to 100 cm. The soil parameters were determined in-situ, and in laboratory for texture, pH, OM, N, P (as P2O5), K (as K2O), Ca, Mg, S, B, Fe, Zn, Cu and Mn of collected soils samples of different layers following standard analytical methods at Soil Science Division, Khumaltar. The result revealed that soil structure was sub-angular in majority of the layers, whereas bottom layer was single grained. The value and chrome of colour was increasing in order from surface to bottom in the majority pits. Similarly, the texture was sandy loam in majority layers of the pits. Moreover, four types of consistence (loose to firm) were observed. Furthermore, mottles and gravels were absent in the majority layers. Likewise, soil was very to moderately acidic in observed layers of majority pits, except bottom layer of agronomy block was slightly acidic. Regarding fertility parameters (OM, macro and micronutrients), some were increasing and vice-versa, while others were intermittent also. Therefore, a single layer is not dominant for particular soil physico-chemical parameters in the farm. In overall, surface layer is more fertile than rest of the layers in all the pits.

This study’s aim was to evaluate the biocompatibility and bioabsorption of a new membrane for guided bone regeneration (polylactic-co-glycolic acid associated with hydroxyapatite and β-tricalcium phosphate) with three thicknesses (200, 500, and 700 µm) implanted in mice subcutaneously. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and the quantification of carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen were used to characterize the physico-chemical properties. One hundred Balb-C mice were divided into 5 experimental groups: Group 1—Sham (without implantation); Group 2—200 μm; Group 3—500 μm; Group 4—700 μm; and Group 5—Pratix®. Each group was subdivided into four experimental periods (7, 30, 60 and 90 days). Samples were collected and processed for histological and histomorphometrical evaluation. The membranes showed no moderate or severe tissue reactions during the experimental periods studied. The 500-μm membrane showed no tissue reaction during any experimental period. The 200-μm membrane began to exhibit fragmentation after 30 days, while the 500-μm and 700-µm membranes began fragmentation at 90 days. All membranes studied were biocompatible and the 500 µm membrane showed the best results for absorption and tissue reaction, indicating its potential for clinical guided bone regeneration.

Abstract A capillary gas chromatographic (CGC) method is described for the determination of cis,cis-methylene interrupted polyunsaturated fatty acids (cis-PUFA) in fats and oils. The sample is saponified and the liberated fatty acids are esterified to the corresponding methyl esters. The latter are analyzed by CGC using a 60M SP2340 capillary column. Area percent values for 9,12-cis,cis-C18:2 and 9,12,15-cis,cis,cis-C18:3 fatty acid methyl esters are summed to give the total cis-PUFA content. Gas chromatographic results agreed well with those obtained by an enzymatic lipoxygenase method at the 31-48% cis-PUFA levels with a correlation coefficient of 0.98. The method has a precision (relative standard deviation) of 0.33% at a 44.4% cis-PUFA level in margarine oil.

The determination of a range of boron concentration in the soil solution, evaluation of the effect of physico-chemical soil properties on boron concentration in the soil solution as well verification whether boron quantity in the soil solution is sufficient for nutritional needs of selected plants cultivated in Poland were comprised. Average boron concentration in the soil solution of Poland&rsquo;s cultivated soils ranges from 0.59 to 5.07 &micro;mol/L and is differentiated by physico-chemical properties of soil. Taking into account decreasing effects of soil properties on the increase of boron concentration in the soil solution, the soil properties can be arranged as follows: organic C &gt;<br />soil abundance in available boron &gt; soil texture &gt; soil pH. The minimum boron quantity observed in the soil solution of Poland&rsquo;s cultivated soils was not sufficient to fulfil nutritional needs of the plants. The maximum boron quantity observed secured nutritional needs of cereals and potatoes but not those of rape plants and sugar beets. Based on the study it can be concluded that the measurement of the concentration of boron in the soil solution can be used in the diagnosis of deficiency of this element for crops.
