Achieving and sustaining competitive advantage is a goal among firms, but it is increasingly challenging in a rapid changing and sophisticated environment. Most of the environmental management undertaken by firms in developing countries are not able to increase the competitive advantage of the product. Hence, this study investigates proactive capabilities that need to be developed in a dynamic environment where it involves green product innovation, environmental proactivity, alliance pro-activeness, and knowledge-based dynamic capabilities that impact on competitive advantage performance. This study involved a survey of 157 manufacturing firms with ISO 14001 certification throughout Malaysia. By implementing structural equation modelling approach, the results provided evidence of positive and significant direct effects of green product innovation and environmental pro-activity on firm’s competitive advantage. The relationship of alliance pro-activeness was fully mediated by the presence of knowledge-based dynamic capabilities as a condition to survive and prosper in a competitive market.

Firms are finding it increasingly important to leverage social media to facilitate knowledge access, get valuable feedback, and improve innovations to cater for emerging markets. However, using social media without integrating other key factors does not seem to add value to innovation efforts. Therefore, this study investigates the potential of social media usage (SMU) in enhancing green product innovation (GPI) and how two types of environmental collaboration may affect that relationship, which is a subject that has been under-explored. First, the literature on the expansion of the use of social media in enhancing GPI was reviewed to develop the theoretical framework and hypotheses. Then, data collected from 211 manufacturing firms were analysed using structural equation modelling to examine the proposed relationship. The results revealed that SMU does not directly influence GPI. Rather, internal environmental collaboration (IEC) and environmental collaboration with suppliers (ECS) fully mediate the relationship between SMU and GPI. The results further disclosed a positive relationship between IEC and ECS, where both types of environmental collaboration seem to be key factors in improving GPI. Hence, this study highlights the importance of knowledge sharing through environmental collaborations for the generation of ideas to improve products in order to remain competitive in the market.

This paper examines the relationship between green product innovation, green process innovation, competitive advantage of product and market performance in the SMEs Ciwaringin batik Cirebon West Java. A survey of 93 SMEs batik provides the basis for the empirical investigation. The relationships between the green innovation product, competitive advantage of product and market performance are examined using stepwise regression.The findings show that green product innovation not contributes positively to competitive advantage of product and market performance. Another findings of this study is that the impact of green process innovation contributes positively to competitive advantage of product but not to market performance in the SMEs Ciwaringin batik. Competitive advantage of product has impact to market performance. This paper also discusses the recomendations of the results.

The paper argued that the challenges experienced in Nigerian textile manufacturing firms resulted from weak strategic entrepreneurship leading to alarming decline in the industry’s performance. Thus, investigated competitive advantage nexus with strategic entrepreneurship (strategic flexibility, adaptability, innovation, strategic leadership, risk taking and dynamic capabilities) as proxies in Lagos State, Nigeria. A cross-sectional survey research design was used and primary data collected. The adapted questionnaire validity was established through confirmatory factor analysis while the reliability was ascertained through internal consistency test. The population consists of 253 senior management staff and total enumeration was used. A total of 253 copies of the questionnaire were administered but 237 copies reverted. Descriptive statistics, exploratory analysis and structural equation model were utilized to analyse the data.

PurposeGreen product innovation is a global industrial concern. This research examines the possible impact of green product innovation on firms' competitive advantage in industrial enterprises operating in qualified industrial zones (QIZs).Design/methodology/approachThis research follows a descriptive analytical methodology, testing two hypotheses formulated based on the reviewed literature among chemical industrial plants of the three Jordanian QIZs (Amman, Zarqa and Irbid) in Jordan. Following a preliminary scoping study of all 219 Jordanian chemical manufacturers, a quantitative five-point Likert scale questionnaire was administered to firms applying green product activities.FindingsIn total, 20 firms were found to be utilizing green product innovation, representing only 9.13% of the overall population. The hypothesis testing results indicated that green product innovation has a statistically significant positive impact on competitive advantage. The results also showed that the factor “firm resources” has a statistically significant positive moderation effect on the relationship between green product innovation and competitive advantage.Research limitations/implicationsThe vast majority of Jordanian chemical manufacturers were not implementing green innovation or practices; further study is needed to identify barriers. Findings are limited to managers of chemical industrial plants in Jordan, excluding the demand side (e.g. plant customers who purchase final products), which leaves a different research angle to be explored.Originality/valueThis is a pioneering study of green product innovation implications for firm competitive advantage in manufacturing enterprises, especially in QIZs of Jordan (which offer tax exemptions to foreign and local investors and sell products to regional and international markets).
