This case study focuses on a large-scale change faced by SOMOS, the largest K-12 educational platform in Brazil. In 2015, the company acquired Saraiva, a traditional family-owned publishing house with a strong portfolio of services in the K-12 sector as well as a significant share of the higher education market sector. The authors have chosen an episodic narrative to describe two relevant events within organizational change. Six episodes of change were presented, each focusing on specific and related points. They document and map the process of integration of the two organizations, describing the main challenges, critical milestones, and outcomes from each episode. They reflect on whether the evidence-based approach, used to develop the organizational change interventions, was successful in bringing people together during this critical transition.

Purpose Misophonia is a sound tolerance disorder condition in certain sounds that trigger intense emotional or physiological responses. While some persons may experience misophonia, a few patients suffer from misophonia. However, there is a dearth of literature on audiological assessment and management of persons with misophonia. The purpose of this report is to discuss the assessment of misophonia and highlight the management option that helped a patient with misophonia. Method A case study of a 26-year-old woman with the complaint of decreased tolerance to specific sounds affecting quality of life is reported. Audiological assessment differentiated misophonia from hyperacusis. Management included retraining counseling as well as desensitization and habituation therapy based on the principles described by P. J. Jastreboff and Jastreboff (2014). A misophonia questionnaire was administered at regular intervals to monitor the effectiveness of therapy. Results A detailed case history and audiological evaluations including pure-tone audiogram and Johnson Hyperacusis Index revealed the presence of misophonia. The patient benefitted from intervention, and the scores of the misophonia questionnaire indicated a decrease in the severity of the problem. Conclusions It is important to differentially diagnose misophonia and hyperacusis in persons with sound tolerance disorders. Retraining counseling as well as desensitization and habituation therapy can help patients who suffer from misophonia.

In the world of K–12 education, the growing numbers of dropouts are a major concern. This article examines the dropout rates of Chinese and Vietnamese high school students. Using logistic regression analysis, this article examines the influence of ethnicity, gender, and socioeconomic status (SES) on dropout rates. The distinct contribution of this analysis lies within the intraethnic comparisons within the Asian American student population and its use of longitudinal data. The results of the study support existing research that gender and SES are related to dropout rates. Moreover, an interesting interaction between ethnicity and SES exists.

AbstractSTEM disciplines are the dominant culture in K-12 education. With its study of organs and diseases that afflict patients’ bodies, Western evidence-based medicine is seen and understood in the modern cultural paradigm as a science and as the practice in which a subject, the doctor, acts on an object; the patient’s body—a dominant culture in the patient’s journey. However, with the continually evolving high-technological and medical knowledge, life-saving therapeutic options are life-changing. They can range from changes in the diet, requiring structural and cultural changes in family life, to changes related to the experiences of learning to live tethered to a machine that is partly inside and partly outside one’s body or with somebody else’s heart. In this article, we show how competing needs to personalize care for the patient as a person forcefully emerge in response to evidence-based medicine’s global cultural dominance. We highlight two fundamental issues emerging in decision-making processes: (1) Framing evidence-based knowledge, uncertainties of the course of the disease and options, and (2) working with different, equally important, and often at odds conceptions of time in the care for the Other. Through the longitudinal analysis of moment-to-moment interactions in high-tech medicine encounters of a patient, his family, and the team caring for them, we show how framing and different conceptions of time emerge as issues, are profoundly interconnected, and are addressed by participants to care for a patient confronting existential decisions.

Validation of the EBD-SIM (evidence-based design-simulation) framework, a conceptual framework developed to integrate the use of lighting simulation in the EBD process, suggested that EBD’s post-occupancy evaluation (POE) should be conducted more frequently. A follow-up field study was designed for subjective–objective results implementation in the EBD process using lighting simulation tools. In this real-time case study, the visual comfort of the occupants was evaluated. The visual comfort analysis data were collected via simulations and questionnaires for subjective visual comfort perceptions. The follow-up study, conducted in June, confirmed the results of the original study, conducted in October, but additionally found correlations with annual performance metrics. This study shows that, at least for the variables related to daylight, a POE needs to be conducted at different times of the year to obtain a more comprehensive insight into the users’ perception of the lit environment.

This work proposes a procedure for simultaneous parameters identifiability and estimation in metabolic networks in order to overcome difficulties associated with lack of experimental data and large number of parameters, a common scenario in the modeling of such systems. As case study, the complex real problem of parameters identifiability of theEscherichia coliK-12 W3110 dynamic model was investigated, composed by 18 differential ordinary equations and 35 kinetic rates, containing 125 parameters. With the procedure, model fit was improved for most of the measured metabolites, achieving 58 parameters estimated, including 5 unknown initial conditions. The results indicate that simultaneous parameters identifiability and estimation approach in metabolic networks is appealing, since model fit to the most of measured metabolites was possible even when important measures of intracellular metabolites and good initial estimates of parameters are not available.
