In traditional settlements in Southwest China, there are many timber historical buildings and residential buildings, which feature a low fire resistance rating. The preservation and inheritance of these timber buildings are mainly threatened by fire. However, the existing research has not explored the deep correlation between the spatial structure of settlements and fire. To make up for the gap, this paper aims to find the ideas and measures that effectively prevent the fire from occurring in timber buildings of traditional settlements in Southwest China, based on fractal and seepage theory. Firstly, the fractal features were extracted from the spatial structure of these settlements. Then, the authors identified the factors affecting the spread of fire in buildings, and analyzed the mechanism of fire propagation between the timber buildings of traditional settlements. On this basis, a fire prevention scheme was proposed, which integrates the “targeted control of overall structure” with “comprehensive synergy between multiple local elements”. The research results provide a reference for applying fractal and seepage theory in the fire prevention of other buildings with special structures.

Subject of research: visualization of the wind regime of residential buildings on the slope area in the Arctic. Goals: the purpose of the study is to identify the problems of visualization of the wind regime on the slopes and the analysis of patterns of airflow around the sloping territories, affecting the comfort of pedestrians. Materials and methods: airflow patterns of slope areas with different characteristics and comfort assessment for humans are analyzed in the course of work. Geotechnical methods are presented in solving the problems of wind erosion and the stability of hillsides and complex terrain within the city limits. Results: The importance and novelty of the research in studying the relationship of slope geometry and environmental quality, as a decrease in comfort inevitably leads to a decrease in the development of nearby urban areas in settlements on the coast of the Arctic Ocean, problems with climate and local climate, as well as a decrease in the quality of life of people. The article considers the relationship of plastic relief with the aeration regime of the territory, the dependence of aerodynamic roughness on their height, features of aeration of the slope and hilly terrain, factors affecting the direction and speed of the wind and methods for studying the aeration regime of slope areas. Findings: The possibilities of applying existing approaches to research and visualization for slope areas are demonstrated. The direction of development of the technique for visualization of slope areas has been determined.

Fire-resistance performance experiments with static loading-fire are investigated about two carbon fiber sheet (CFS) shear strengthened reinforced concrete (RC) beams exposed to the ISO834 standard fire. Shear strengthened RC beams are wrapped with fire insulation material- thick painted fire retardant coatings. Relationship between measure points’ temperature and time are achieved. The results suggest that: the ratio of shear-span is the main factor to fire-resistance rating and failure modes of CFS shear strengthened RC beams in fire; shear-failure fire-resistance rating are increased by thickening fire insulation to shear strengthened RC beams. A computer program is developed to calculate the temperature fields of fire insulated concrete beams shear strengthened with CFS coated thick fireproof material. This program is validated comparing with experimental results. Researches can give a supplement to produce overall fire-resistance factors of CFS shear strengthened reinforced concrete beams at high temperatures.

Distribution of goods in urban areas is one of the most important factors affecting the operation of the region but the management of these services is often overlooked by transport policy makers in Polish cities. Historical buildings create additional difficulties because they make the infrastructure development impossible. It is estimated that in large European cities approximately 25% of CO2 emissions, 30% of nitrogen oxides and 50% of particulates from transport are emitted by trucks and vans. The doctoral thesis presents methods used to optimize distribution processes in cities with historic buildings in Europe and around the world. It also presents the results of a research carried out in the Old Town of Gdańsk and proposes a method to optimize distribution processes for the area, which was the main objective of the work. The hypothesis of the trial has been formulated as follows: locating Urban Consolidation Center not far away from the center of the City of Gdańsk would bring tangible benefits for the city and all users of the urban space. The study used a method of analysis and criticism of literature; detailed study of a particular case and the method of observation. According to the design model, the proposed solution will bring tangible benefits to all users of space – residents, businesses and city authorities. The results of tests carried out on account of this thesis were provided to the city authorities.

The settlement of the immigrants, especially foreign immigrants in different cities and city areas has a major influence in shaping and changing socio-spatial structure of these areas. Mashhad has been the target of a large number of Afghan refugees in the past decades (160 thousand people). The initial settlement of immigrants in marginal areas of the city and residential mobility in the early settlement has obvious consequences on the social and spatial structure of different areas targeted by the immigrants. This study aimed to analyze the factors affecting the residential mobility of Afghan refugees residing in districts 4, 5 and 6 of Mashhad- Iran. The research was a survey type and the required data were gathered by field studies using questionnaires and library. The results of this study suggests that a major portion Afghan immigrant (86%) have been settled at the beginning of their arrival to Mashhad in marginal areas and slums including, Golshahr, Panj-tan, Ghaleh Sakhteman and Tollab. In the initial settlement of immigrants in the mentioned places factors such as proximity to fellow coreligionists and affordable rental housing prices are crucial. In terms of residential mobility, 45.7% of immigrant families have changed their location at least once in Mashhad. The highest residential mobility has taken place in the Golshahr areas (28.1%) and Panj-tan (28.1%). Family residential mobility between regions existed in smaller and restricted scale. The stated reasons and motives in relation to residential mobility of immigrants are different in the later stages after primary residence. Generally the factors of insecurity and lack of resources and utilities, improved financial condition and ability to buy a better house, ethnics and religion inconsonance and the tenant conditions are among the reasons stated by the refugees for changing their residence.
