<p>In autumn the prevailing wind in the middle atmosphere at mid and high latitudes changes from summer easterly to winter westerly.  This process is not smooth but interrupted by the Hiccup of the fall transition with characteristics similar to a mini sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) which occurs in fall even though the zonal mean zonal wind does not reverse to easterly again. Combining global reanalysis data and satellite observations we improve our knowledge and understanding of the dynamics of the Hiccup of the fall transition in the middle atmosphere. The introduction of a new definition for the onset of the Hiccup focusing now on its core region in the lower mesosphere allows us the automatic detection of a Hiccup in almost every year and thus a deeper insight into its dynamics. For example, we found a latitudinal and altitudinal shift in the zonal wind regime during the Hiccup. We also investigate its 3D-structure and compare the characteristics of the Hiccup in the Northern hemisphere with those in the Southern hemisphere. We found that the latitudinal and altitudinal shift of the zonal wind regime occurs in both hemispheres but is more pronounced in the Northern hemisphere and smoother in the Southern hemisphere.  Additionally, we discuss the possible impact of the Hiccup on the D-region.</p>

Abstract The dissolved oxygen (DO) is one of the most important parameters in lakes ecosystem. Variability of DO in lakes is associated with the absorption of oxygen due to the decomposition of organic matter and chemical reactions and the release of oxygen as a result of photosynthesis. The DO concentration also depends on seasonal changes in water temperature and mixing regime. The aim of this work is to assess the influence of seasonal thermal and density stratification on the DO stratification in a small mesotrophic lake and to develop a regression DO model, with water temperature and density and characteristics of wind regime as independent variables. Long-term measurements of water temperature and DO in small Karelian Lake Vendyurskoe in 2007-2020 were used. At the stage of spring-summer heating, three periods are considered when the water column was in the state of homothermy (May 15-June 15), weak stratification (July 15-August 15), and strong stratification (July 15-August 15). The wind load (number of days with wind speed more than 3 m/s for each period) was analysed based on the weather station Petrozavodsk data. As a result of multiple regression analysis, taking into account the wind load, dependences of DO stratification on water temperature stratification (R2 = 0.51) and water density stratification (R2 = 0.61) are found. Obtained regression DO models can be used for solving various environmental tasks.

This research presents a validation methodology for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) assessments of rooftop wind regime in urban environments. A case study is carried out at the Donadeo Innovation Centre for Engineering building at the University of Alberta campus. A numerical assessment of rooftop wind regime around buildings of the University of Alberta North campus has been performed by using 3D steady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations, on a large-scale high-resolution grid using the ANSYS CFX code. Two methods of standard deviation (SDM) and average (AM) were introduced to compare the numerical results with the corresponding measurements. The standard deviation method showed slightly better agreements between the numerical results and measurements compared to the average method, by showing the average wind speed errors of 10.8% and 17.7%, and wind direction deviation of 8.4° and 12.3°, for incident winds from East and South, respectively. However, the average error between simulated and measured wind speeds of the North and West incidents were 51.2% and 24.6%, respectively. Considering the fact that the upstream geometry was not modeled in detail for the North and West directions, the validation methodology presented in this paper is deemed as acceptable, as good agreement between the numerical and experimental results of East and South incidents were achieved.

The ability of different marine species to use acoustic cues to locate reefs is known, but the maximal propagation distance of coral reef sounds is still unknown. Using drifting antennas (made of a floater and an autonomous recorder connected to a hydrophone), six transects were realized from the reef crest up to 10 km in the open ocean on Moorea island (French Polynesia). Benthic invertebrates were the major contributors to the ambient noise, producing acoustic mass phenomena (3.5–5.5 kHz) that could propagate at more than 90 km under flat/calm sea conditions and more than 50 km with an average wind regime of 6 knots. However, fish choruses, with frequencies mainly between 200 and 500 Hz would not propagate at distances greater than 2 km. These distances decreased with increasing wind or ship traffic. Using audiograms of different taxa, we estimated that fish post-larvae and invertebrates likely hear the reef at distances up to 0.5 km and some cetaceans would be able to detect reefs up to more than 17 km. These results are an empirically based validation from an example reef and are essential to understanding the effect of soundscape degradation on different zoological groups.

Purpose. The paper is aimed at studying the relationship between the wind regime and the wind stress curl in the Black Sea, on the one hand, and the long-term changes in the sea level pressure fields in winter months, on the other. Methods and Results. The data on wind speed and sea level pressure in January – February from the NCEP/NСAR reanalysis for 1948–2018 are used. Based on the 6-hour data, the synoptic conditions accompanied by high and low values of the wind stress curl in the sea were determined. The synoptic situations in which a vast anticyclone is located north and northeast of the sea, and the area of low pressure – to the southwest of the sea in the Mediterranean region, are accompanied by the northeast and east winds, and by the cyclonic curl predominance. On the contrary, passing of the cyclones to the north of the sea and increase of pressure to the southwest are followed by the westerly and southwesterly winds, and by the anticyclonic curl predominance. Extremely high monthly mean values of the cyclonic curl were observed in those years, when the area occupied by the Siberian anticyclone increased and expanded westward, so that the Black Sea was on the southwestern periphery of its spur. Extremely low values of the anticyclonic curl were noted when the Azores anticyclone area expanded to the Mediterranean region. The wind stress curl changes on the multidecadal scales have shown its relation to the global changes in the field of the sea level pressure and the sign of the pressure anomalies at the low latitudes. Conclusions. The opposite sign of the surface pressure anomalies taking place to the northeast and southwest of the sea is accompanied by the highest values of the wind stress curl.
