The hypotheses testing used pathanalysis. To find empirical evidence, the main hypothesis testing was done bytesting 16 sub-hypotheses. Because of recent failures in the past, the role of Board and the Board monitoring have become important. The directors are expected to be more accountable. In this study, the researcher tries to investigate the relationship between the level of board activity and firm value for firms in FMCG sector over a three-year period from 2010–2011 to 2012–2013. The primary aim of the article is to provide empirical evidence and specifically find out the impact of board activity measured by number of meetings and its impact on firm performance. The results indicate that the attendance in board meetings is significantly positively correlated with ROA. The OLS results with both the performance measures show that the point estimates of attendance at board meetings were significant indicating that attendance in such meetings is perceived to be an indicator of good monitoring activities of the board.

This paper investigates the role of monitoring mechanisms in a corporate governance structure, focusing on listed companies in a developing country, Bangladesh. Specifically, it examines whether different interrelated monitoring mechanisms - board of directors and committee, management and external auditors - affect firm performance. This research found the possibility of having a substitution or complementary links in monitoring mechanisms that explain why there is no consistent empirical evidence between individual monitoring mechanisms and firm performance. This study has policy implications for the Bangladeshi corporate environment. Progress of implementation of the guidelines appears to be reasonable. However, credibility of the reported figures and quality of implementation remain open to discussion. To what extent these status reports reflect improved governance or are largely a form of paper compliance is a debatable issue. This research also suggests that when considering any change in corporate monitoring, the Bangladeshi government should take into account the nation‟s business, social structure, culture and legal practices.

University–industry collaboration and innovation are popular topics in emerging countries. Although the main premise is that such collaboration and innovation increase firm performance, the empirical evidence is inconclusive. Drawing on a sample of 79 Turkish small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the authors find negative direct effects of innovation-based strategy and university collaboration on the profit growth of firms. However, where there is fierce market competition, they find that an innovation-based strategy increases profit growth and that collaboration with universities needs to exceed a certain level before the benefits are manifested in profit growth. These results contribute to the debate on the role of innovation and university collaboration in the profit growth of SMEs in emerging countries. For managers, the implications are that an innovation-based strategy is important in competitive markets in emerging countries, and that university collaboration needs to be taken more seriously and must involve higher levels of effort and commitment if benefits are to emerge; otherwise, companies may decide against working with universities.

Purpose Guided by the theory of dynamic capabilities and the knowledge-based view of an organization, the purpose of this paper is to examine the crucial role played by entrepreneurial orientation and absorptive capacity in the relationship between strategic flexibility and firm performance, with a specific focus on small firms. Design/methodology/approach The study uses survey data collected from owners of 272 small businesses in India and follows the linear regression method to establish the link between strategic flexibility and firm performance. It hypothesizes that the strategic flexibility of a small firm impacts entrepreneurial orientation, and subsequently its performance, while absorptive capacity further enhances this relationship. Findings The conclusions drawn from the study provide empirical evidence on the mediating role of entrepreneurial orientation in the relationship between strategic flexibility and firm performance. The findings also point out that the potential absorptive capacity of a firm strengthens the relationship between its strategic flexibility and entrepreneurial orientation. Research limitations/implications The empirical findings of the study are limited to small firms from the automotive service industry. Practical implications The study contributes to the existing knowledge on managerial practice by pointing out the importance of strategic flexibility as a dynamic capability and illustrating its impact in the case of a small firm’s performance. Originality/value As yet, there is a dearth of empirical evidence derived from large samples of small firms. The study supplements available literature on dynamic capabilities and knowledge management.

Human governance is an essential internal value that acts as a guide for a human to behave. Positive internal values can be the drivers to inspire people to work with integrity and accountability for the well-being of the businesses. Previous studies on corporate governance and firm performance show very little empirical evidence done in determining the role of human governance. The term human governance itself especially from the Western perspective is still unclearly defined. Thus, the objectives of this study are twofold. First, to investigate the characteristics of human governance from Western and Islamic perspectives. Second, to examine the factors that can improve the quality of human governance in order to mitigate the misconduct behaviour among the employees and the top management. The findings show that Western human governance emphasizes more on the good ethical values of human behaviour but Islamic human governance highlight on religiosity that build good spiritual that generates good behaviour among the Muslim people.
