The search for alternatives to chemical anthelmintics in the control of gastrointestinal nematodes in small ruminants is now an imperative. the aim of this study was to evaluate the anthelmintic activity of eight forage plants from Côte d’Ivoire, including four Leguminosae and four Moraceae against Haemonchus contortus. The egg hatching inhibition and larvae paralysis were used for the assays. The contents of phenolic compounds (tannins and flavonoids) also were determined. Of the eight hydro-methanolic extracts prepared, three showed strong anthelmintic activity. The extract of Morus mesozygia was ovicidal (% inhibition = 84.08%), while that of Ficus lutea and Albizia adianthifolia were larvicidal (% mortality = 100% and 97.42% respectively) at 2 mg/mL. Tannins and flavonoids contents ranged between 1.60 and 2.89 mg catechol equivalent/g dry matter and 2.42 and 2.89 mg quercetin equivalent/g dry matter respectively. These three forage plants may be a good alternative in the control of gastrointestinal nematodes in small ruminants farming.

Brucellosis is one of the main zoonoses affecting ruminants. Cattle and small ruminants are involved in transhumance and trade between Côte d'Ivoire and Mali. The endemic nature of the disease in both countries, connected through transhumance, poses unique challenges and requires more information to facilitate disease surveillance and the development of integrated control strategies. This study aimed to assess the main factors influencing the historical and current transborder transmission of brucellosis between Côte d'Ivoire and Mali. A literature review was conducted and data collection was performed through a participatory, transdisciplinary process by holding focus group discussions and interviews with key stakeholders. Cattle breeders, herdsmen, professionals of animal and human health, border control agents and experts took part. The data was analyzed to generate essential new knowledge for transborder brucellosis transmission factors and control strategies. From the literature, the seroprevalence of brucellosis in both countries varied from 11% (1987) to 20% (2013) and 15% (1972–1973) to 5% (2012–2014) in Mali and Côte d'Ivoire, respectively. The reduction of seroprevalence in Côte d'Ivoire was the result of the annual vaccination campaigns which lowered it from 28% (1978) to 14% (1984) after an increase due to livestock policy implemented in 1976. The meta-analysis and interviews jointly showed that the cross-border mobility was associated with the livestock development policy in Côte d'Ivoire as well as the ECOWAS act on the free movement of people and goods. This act supported the seasonal transhumance of livestock for access to pasture land in southern humid zones in Côte d'Ivoire. The seasonal mobility for grazing and trade was the main risk factor for the spread of brucellosis between pastoral zones of both countries. The existing legal health framework and border control mechanism do not achieve transborder surveillance to control brucellosis. Existing sanitary regulations should be adapted at regional scale to integrate a joint surveillance of high priority zoonotic diseases like brucellosis at border controls.

Aim: To prevent enzymatic browning during the freezing of yam slices of the Kponan variety (Dioscorea cayenensis-rotundata). Study Design: The experimental set-up was of a completely randomized design. Place and Duration of Study: Department of Food Science and Technology, Food Biochemistry and Tropical Products Technology Laboratory (BATPTL), University of Nangui Abrogoua, Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, between August and December 2018. Methodology: For this purpose, yam slices were either pretreated with a natural agent (lemon juice solution at different pH) or pretreated and blanched (85 °C for 2 min) and then packed in plastic bags and kept in the freezer at -18°C over a period of 4 weeks. Polyphenoloxidase and Peroxidase activities, Dry matter, rate of browning and sensory attributes of yam slices were determined. Results: The results showed a decrease in polyphenoloxidase and peroxidase activities regardless of the treatment. The largest decreases in activity were observed in yam slices that were both pretreated and blanched compared to the control (about 53.49% decrease in the specific activity of the PPOs and 51.46% of POD). The combination of pretreatment and blanching also resulted in lower dry matter yam slices compared to pretreated slices only. After 1 month of storage in the freezer, the lower rates of loss (browning) were recorded for the slices of yams that were both pretreated and blanched compared to the other methods which had very high losses. The pretreated and blanched slices had high dry matter content. The sensory profile of slices processed by the combined technique after one month of freezing had a good appreciation for all sensory characteristics of yam. Conclusion: In order to have a good product, the combined method is recommended for better freezer storage of yam slices.

Aims: This study evaluated the sensory properties and consumer acceptability of orange-fleshed sweet potato and local sweet potato among households of Central and Northern Côte d’Ivoire. Study Design: Selection of sweet potato cultivars, determination of nutritional properties, cooking process, and evaluation of hedonic testing and consumer acceptability. Place and Duration of Study: Bouake and Korhogo district in Central and Northern Côte d’Ivoire, for three years 2018, 2019, and 2020 (July to November). Methodology: Sensory evaluation and acceptability were performed using a nine-point hedonic scale. The relationships between the sensory attributes and the sweet potato cultivars were analyzed using a Principal Component Analysis plot. Biochemical standard methods were used to determine the dry matter, sugar, total carotenoid contents, and mineral composition of sweet potato cultivars tested by the sensory panel. Results: All twelve sweet potato cultivars were accepted based on sensory attributes with the different traits of preference. In Bouake district, white (Sanfo Figui 1 and Sanfo Figui 2) and yellow cultivars (Fatoni 2) were most preferred for their texture and yam-like taste, while in Korhogo locality, OFSP (Covington TIB-440060, CIP-199062-1 and Irene) and yellow cultivar (Gotchan) were most accepted because of their attractive appearance and their sweet taste. The OFSP cultivars recorded low dry matter and high sugar content compared to white and yellow varieties. Also, OFSP showed the highest content of carotenoid (181.70 to 351.47 µg/g dw), while local variety recorded low content. All the sweet potato cultivars tested contain mineral components. Conclusion: This study shows that the local and OFSP varieties were successfully accepted by the consumer with the different quality traits. The main quality traits that determine consumer preference are appearance, texture, and taste (none or sweet taste). Understanding consumer quality traits can increase the effectiveness of breeding programmes, increase yield and adoption of new varieties.
