Territorial marketing and great events marketing is generally considered by academics and professionals as a discipline with dynamic and not fully distinct fields. This study aims to develop research in these fields, examining the impacts of territorial marketing on a tourism destination during a great event. Data collected from tourists in Cortina d’Ampezzo (Italy) demonstrates that this destination became famous following territorial marketing used for the Olympic Games in 1956 and its attractiveness is still alive, so much so that it has been chosen once again to host the 2026 Winter Olympic Games. This study underlines how territorial marketing has created a tourism destination that can attract tourists regardless of the great event.

The Paralympic Games are one of the world’s most important multisport events, maybe second only to the Olympic Games. However, research conducted to date shows that the media do not devote as much space to them as would accordingly be expected. This article proposes, through a case study, a new way of approaching this hypothetical discrimination by comparing the attention that the London Paralympic Games received from the Spanish print press with the attention that other sports received (football, basketball, tennis, cycling, motor sports and other minority sports) while those Games were being held. The main finding of our study is that over the period analysed, the Spanish press devoted less space to the Paralympic Games than to any other sport.

This study concerns research related to mega events, such as the Olympic Games, to determine whether the economic impact of the Olympic Games on the host countries is significant. This study uses two methods, panel data analysis and event study, to test hypotheses based on the data from 15 countries that have hosted 24 summer and winter Olympic Games. The results indicate that the economic impact of the Olympic Games on the host countries is only significant in terms of certain parameters (i.e., gross domestic product performance and unemployment) in the short term. These findings provide decision makers with comprehensive and multidimensional knowledge about the economic impact of hosting a mega event and about whether their objectives can be realized as expected.

ObjectiveThis paper aims to describe the medical service of two polyclinics of the PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games and to analyse the injury and illness of athletes who visited the polyclinics during the oilympic period in order to provide some insight with respect to the future construction and operation of polyclinics in mass gathering events such as the Olympic Games.MethodsThe PyeongChang Olympic Village was located near the Olympic Stadium for snow sports athletes and the Gangneung Olympic Village was located near the ice venues for ice sports athletes. During the Olympic Games, polyclinics were consisted of emergency service and outpatient clinics. We retrospectively analysed the electronic medical record data of athletes who visiting polyclinics between 9 February 2018 and 25 February 2018.ResultsDuring the Olympics, there were 1639 athlete encounters in both polyclinics. Among those, injuries of athletes were 237 (14% of all athlete encounters) in total, and the most common injured site was knee joint. Upper respiratory infection was the most frequent case in diseases of athlete encounters. Total 223 cases of image study were done, MRI was 44 cases.ConclusionThe PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games had the highest number of participants in the history of Winter Olympic Games. Overall 48% of athletes encountered polyclinics due to disease during the Games period. Upper respiratory infection and other seasonal diseases were more frequent this Olympic Games than before. Polyclinics were managed healthcare of athletes as well as injury and illness of athletes. In winter sports, a polyclinic and similar medical facilities should be prepare for diseases considering geography, weather as well as injuries and endemic diseases when planning future mass gathering events.

Residents’ support for hosting the Olympic Games is crucial for a bid to succeed in the Olympic host-city selection process. Because of the vital role of the media in framing public perceptions of Olympic bids, the purpose of this study was to examine media coverage of hosting the Olympic Games during the Olympic host-city bid process. A quantitative content analysis was conducted on newspaper articles about Pyeongchang, Korea. Pyeongchang was a candidate city for 3 consecutive bids for the Winter Olympic Games, and it finally won its latest bid to host the 2018 Games. Six hundred Korean newspaper articles were collected for analysis. The results indicated that positive, nationwide discussions of hosting the Olympic Games were presented during the successful bid. Infrastructure legacy was mentioned frequently and dominantly for both successful and unsuccessful bid periods, whereas the presence of sport-development and sociocultural-legacy themes increased in the latest, successful, bid. In addition, extensive coverage related to celebrity endorsement was found during the successful bid.

This study aims to propose a text mining framework suitable for destination image (DI) research based on UGC (User Generated Content), which combines the LDA (Latent Dirichlet Allocation) model and sentiment analysis method based on custom rules and lexicon to identify and analyze the DI in the emerging ski market. The ski resorts in the host city of the 2022 Winter Olympic Games are selected as a case study. The findings reveal that (1) 9 image attributes, out of which two image attributes have not been identified before in winter destination studies, namely beginner suitability and ticketing service. (2) In the past seven snow seasons, the negative sentiment of tourists has shown a continuous downward trend. The positive sentiment has exhibited a slow upward trend. (3) For tourists from destination countries affected by the Winter Olympic Games, the destination image will be improved when the destination meets their expectations. When the destination cannot meet their expectations, the tourists still believe that the holding of the Winter Olympic will enhance the destination’s situation. The theoretical and managerial implications of these findings are discussed.
