Character association in forty eight genotypes of lentil was studied for nine different agro-morphological characters in normal and late sown conditions. Normal sown condition was taken into consideration as optimum environment and late sown as heat stressed environment. The correlation study revealed consistent positive significant character association (at genotypic and phenotypic levels) of pods per plant with seed yield per plant in both sowing conditions. So this character may be considered for yield improvement. From path coefficient analysis study it was revealed that pods per plant showed consistently positive direct effect on seed yield/plant for both sowing conditions.

The extent of genetic variability, heritability, correlation coefficient and path analysis were analyzed for opium yield, seed yield and eight component traits in a group of 101 germplasm lines of different ecogeographical origin. Heritability was high for all the characters except capsules/plant. High heritability coupled with high genetic advance and coefficient of variability was noticed for capsule weight/plant, capsule area, husk yield/plant, seed yield/plant, opium yield/plant and leaves/plant. Opium yield, seed yield, husk yield and capsule weight exhibited positively significant correlation among themselves and these four characters had also positive significant genotypic correlation with plant height, branches/plant, capsules/plant, capsule area and leaves/plant. Path coefficient analysis indicated that capsule weight/plant had highest direct path towards opium yield (2.267) followed by capsules/plant (0.291), capsule area (0.203), plant height (0.155) and leaves/plant (0.101). Considering the direct and indirect selection of major contributors, a plant type in opium poppy (Papaver somniferum L.) based on multiple selection index has been discussed to enhance opium yield on one hand and dual purpose varieties (opium and seed yield) on the other hand.

Background: Fenugreek is grown under various agro-climatic conditions of the world as well as in India. However, overall yield and quality depends upon various quantitative characters that exist during crop growth period. Therefore, this study aimed to find out the character association and path coefficient analysis among the seed yield and yield contributing characters in fenugreek genotype. Methods: Thirty genotypes were sown with three replications under two environments namely normal (E1) and limited (E2) irrigation conditions during Rabi season 2019-20. The experiment was laid down in RBD. Result: The genotypic and phenotypic correlations were exhibited significantly positive for number of pods per plant (0.765, 0.725 and 0.670, 0.651), number of seeds per pod (0.705, 0.650 and 0.666, 0.640) and pod length (0.376, 0.348 and 0.351, 0.327) with seed yield per plant in both the environments i.e. E1 and E2. The highest direct effect on seed yield per plant was observed for number of pods per plant (0.693, 0.602 and 1.030, 0.754), number of seed per pod (0.396, 0.378 and 0.490, 0.421) and test weight (0.338, 0.304 and 0.405, 0.368) at genotypic and phenotypic levels in both environments i.e. E1 and E2.

Background: Assessment of genetic variability and inter-relationship between the characters can be used in the breeding programme to evolve new varieties with wide genetic diversity to maximize the yield potential in crop improvement programmes. Eighty-four field pea genotypes were evaluated in an augmented block design for thirteen quantitative traits to study variance components, heritability, genetic advance and inter-relationship between the yield and yield contributing traits. Methods: The extent of phenotypic and genotypic variation that exist in a character was calculated by the formula suggested by Burton and de Vane (1953). Heritability in broad sense and genetic advance as per cent of mean for each character was computed using the formula suggested by Hanson et al. (1956) and Johnson et al. (1955), respectively. Correlation coefficient was calculated by method suggested by Searle (1961) and path coefficient analysis done as per method of Wright (1921) and elaborated by Dewey and Lu (1959).Result: Significant differences observed among the genotypes tested for the yield characters indicated the presence of variability. High heritability coupled with high genetic advance as percent of mean was observed for the traits viz., plant height, effective pods plant-1, harvest index and seed yield plant-1 were governed by additive gene effects which will aid in effective selection. Correlation coefficient analysis revealed that seed yield plant-1 had highly significant and positive correlation with biological yield plant-1, effective pods plant-1, harvest index, seeds pods-1 and effective nodes plant-1, indicating that these traits are strongly associated with seed yield in field pea. Path coefficient analysis identified biological yield plant-1 followed by harvest index, seed pod-1, effective nodes plant-1, 100-seed weight and day to 50% flowering as highly desirable components with great direct effects on seed yield.

Opium poppy (Papaver somniferum L.) is an important medicinal plant of pharmacopoel uses. Opium latex and its derivatives are used in different medicines as analgesic, narcotic, sedative, sudorific, hyponitic, antispasmodic, ant diarrhea and cough etc. Genetic improvement in opium and seed yield, component breeding is important and selection based on multiple characters is more beneficial in developing desired plant types. Therefore the present study was made on group of 22 strains of opium poppy to find out variability and suitable selection indices for opium and seed yield. Heritability in broad sense was high for capsule weight/plant, plant height, capsule length, stem diameter and opium yield. The discriminant functions based on single character were less efficient while on the basis of combination it was in general more efficient. The comparison of different functions revealed that capsule weight/plant, capsule length, plant height are major yield component and thus practicing selection for attainment of high opium and seed yield lines, maximum weight age could be given to these characters. The positive association of opium yield and seed yield suggested that by adopting suitable component breeding and selection, a dual-purpose variety (opium and seed yield) may be developed.
