In different crop plants, combining ability and heterosis are used as important diagnostic tools for assessing the performance of parental genotypes and their hybrids. This research aimed to evaluate heterotic and combining ability effects in the diallel crosses of melon (Cucumis melo L.) for yield- and quality-related traits. Seven melon (C. melo L.) genotypes were grown and crossed in a complete diallel fashion to produce F1 hybrids. During the 2019 crop season, 49 melon genotypes (7 parents + 42 F1 hybrids) were grown in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Observations were made for seven characters. Analysis of variance revealed significant (P ≤ 0.01) differences among the melon genotypes for harvest age, fruit flesh thickness, fruit total soluble solids, fruit length, and fruit diameter and merely significant differences (P ≤ 0.05) for fruit weight. Combining ability analysis revealed that mean squares due to general combining ability (GCA) were significant for fruit diameter but were nonsignificant for all other traits. However, mean squares due to specific combining ability (SCA) were significant for all traits. The parental genotypes PK-165, PK-464, and PK-669 exhibited the highest and desirable GCA effects for yield and quality traits. Hence, these genotypes could be used to generate high-yielding hybrid/open-pollinated cultivars. GCA:SCA ratios further revealed that the traits of harvest age, fruit flesh thickness, fruit total soluble solids, fruit length, and fruit weight were controlled by dominant gene action, whereas fruit diameter was managed by additive and dominant genes. The majority of the traits were controlled by nonadditive gene action, verifying that the said breeding material could be efficiently used for the production of hybrid cultivars on the basis of heterotic effects.

O pH do solo influenciou positivamente a produtividade tipo exportação e sólidos solúveis totais. Os altos teores de micronutrientes no solo foram prejudiciais à cultura, com exceção do Zn. unitermos: Cucumis melo L., propriedades do solo, fertirrigação  MIRANDA, N. de O.; OLIVEIRA, T. The following variables were measured: yield (export type and marketable fruits); quality (total soluble solid contents and fruit pulp firmness); fertirrigation (emitter discharge rate, elevation, distance to water inlet and applied fertilizer amount); soil chemical properties (pH, organic matter, Ca, Mg, K, Na, potential acidity, available P, Cu, Zn, Fe and Mn) and physical properties (contents of clay, sand and silt, soil density and soil moisture at 5 and 10 kPa). Data analysis was carried out through descriptive statistics, Spearman’s correlation and multiple regressions. Applied water and nutrient excess had negative influence on melon yield, whereas soil sand content favored fruit quality. Soil pH had a positive influence on export type yield and total soluble solid content. Melon yield and quality were improved by high Mg contents, which corrected an unbalanced soil K:Ca:Mg ratio. High soil micronutrient contents were harmful to the crop, except for Zn. KEYWORDS: Cucumis melo L., soil properties, fertirrigation.

ABSTRACTMelon (Cucumis melo L.), one of the high-value fruits, has been started to expand by farmers but the heterogeneity in quality may constrain the development. This study aimed to improve the quality of melon in quartz-sand soil (Quartzipsamments). A field experiment based on the split-plot design was conducted on April to June 2016 in Kotawaringin Timur Regency, Central Kalimantan Province, using two factors comprising melon varieties and on-productive-stage fertilization. The varieties consist of Rio F1 (V1), Action 434 F1 (V2), Madesta F1 (V3), Dewo F1 (V4), Gracia F1 (V5), and Okasa F1 (V6). While four fertilization packages which have different dosage on each were tested, including control (P0), low (P2), medium (P3), and high (P3). The result indicated that either varieties or fertilizing significantly affected growth, yield, and the quality of melon. There was a significant interaction between varieties and fertilizing toward yield and quality. Madesta F1 is the only varieties which showed positive response along with increasing fertilizer dosage, and the highest weight (4.55 kg) occurred on the high fertilizing level (P3). While in regard to sweetness level, Rio F1 showed a positive response until medium fertilizing dosage (P2) and resulted in the highest sweetness level by 13.05 oBrix but decreased on the higher dosage (P3). The fruit weight slightly-negative correlated with total sweetness level where the increase in weight may reduce the sweetness level. Keywords: lowland, quartz sand, sweetness levelABSTRAKMelon (Cucumis melo L.) sebagai salah satu komoditas bernilai ekonomis tinggi mulai dikembangkan banyak petani, namun terkendala dengan kualitas buah yang beragam.
