ABSTRACTMelon (Cucumis melo L.), one of the high-value fruits, has been started to expand by farmers but the heterogeneity in quality may constrain the development. This study aimed to improve the quality of melon in quartz-sand soil (Quartzipsamments). A field experiment based on the split-plot design was conducted on April to June 2016 in Kotawaringin Timur Regency, Central Kalimantan Province, using two factors comprising melon varieties and on-productive-stage fertilization. The varieties consist of Rio F1 (V1), Action 434 F1 (V2), Madesta F1 (V3), Dewo F1 (V4), Gracia F1 (V5), and Okasa F1 (V6). While four fertilization packages which have different dosage on each were tested, including control (P0), low (P2), medium (P3), and high (P3). The result indicated that either varieties or fertilizing significantly affected growth, yield, and the quality of melon. There was a significant interaction between varieties and fertilizing toward yield and quality. Madesta F1 is the only varieties which showed positive response along with increasing fertilizer dosage, and the highest weight (4.55 kg) occurred on the high fertilizing level (P3). While in regard to sweetness level, Rio F1 showed a positive response until medium fertilizing dosage (P2) and resulted in the highest sweetness level by 13.05 oBrix but decreased on the higher dosage (P3). The fruit weight slightly-negative correlated with total sweetness level where the increase in weight may reduce the sweetness level. Keywords: lowland, quartz sand, sweetness levelABSTRAKMelon (Cucumis melo L.) sebagai salah satu komoditas bernilai ekonomis tinggi mulai dikembangkan banyak petani, namun terkendala dengan kualitas buah yang beragam.

In agricultural production, nitrogen loss leads to economic loss and is a high environmental risk affecting plant growth, yield, and quality. Use of the N fertilizer with a urease inhibitor is thus necessary to minimize N losses and increase the efficiency of N. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of N-(n-butyl) Thiophosphoric Triamide (NBPT) on the growth, yield, and quality of pineapple. The experiment involved two foliar fertilizer treatments: 1% (w/v) urea solution with NBPT (2.25 mL kg−1 urea) was treated as NLU (NBPT Liquid Urea), and the same concentration of urea without NBPT served as the control. Both were applied 12 times, starting 1 month after planting (MAP) and continuing once a month for 12 months. The application of urea with NBPT notably increased the above-ground dry biomass per plant (20% and 10% at 8 and 12 MAP, respectively), leaf area per plant (23% and 15% at 8 and 12 MAP, respectively), N accumulation per plant (10%), PFPN (Partial Factor Productivity) (13%), and average fruit weight (15%) compared to the treatment with urea alone (control). The analysis of quality parameters indicated that urea with NBPT improves TSS (Total Soluble Solids) (19%), ascorbic acid (10%), and sucrose (14%) but reduces the total organic acid content (21%) in pineapple. When using urea with a urease inhibitor (NBPT), there was a significant improvement in growth, yield, quality, and nitrogen use efficiency, with the additional benefit of reduced nitrogen losses, in combination with easy handling. Hence, urea with a urease inhibitor can be used as a viable alternative for increasing pineapple yield by boosting growth with better fruit quality.

A study was conducted during 2010-2015 at Central Institute of Agricultural Engineering, Bhopal, to find out effect of irrigation and fertigation scheduling on growth, yield and quality of guava (Psidium guajava ). The ex-periments were laid out in factorial randomized block design with six treatment combinations which include three irrigation level (100, 80 and 60 %) along with two fertigation level (100 and 75 % water soluble fertilizers) and repli-cated thrice. The nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers were applied through fertigation as well as soil ap-plication to test various attributes of five six old guava cv. L-49. The investigation indicated that the maximum plant height, Periphery of rootstock, yield per plant (kg/plant) and yield (t/ha) were higher under D1F1 (100 % irrigation with 100 % fertigation) followed by D2F1 (80 % irrigation with 100 % fertigation) and minimum under D3F2 (60 % irrigation with 75 % fertigation). Interaction effect was non-significant at 0.05 % level due to plant height (3.90 m) and Periphery of rootstock (26.26 cm) but significantly influenced by yield per plant (27.65 kg/plant) and yield (7.65 t/ha). Physico-chemical properties like fruit diameter (6.76 cm), fruit weight (182.10 g) and pulp weight (134.38 g) were significantly at 0.05 % due to different irrigation and fertigation level as well as interaction effects but fruit length (7.45 cm), TSS (13.22 %) and ascorbic acid (54.32 mg/100 g pulp) were non-significant due to different level of irri-gation and fertigation as well as interaction effect.

ABSTRACT An experiment was conducted to study the effect of organic and inorganic nitrogen in the form of urea and castor cake on the growth, yielding and fruit quality of sapota trees. Nitrogen in the form of urea significantly influenced the vegetative growth of the trees. The greatest tree height (7.26 m), tree spread (8.11 m in N-S and 8.13 m in E-W directions), fruit weight (63.65 g), the number of fruit per tree (2627.56) and fruit yield per tree (163.30 kg) were obtained with the application of 900 g N/tree in the form of urea. However, that was found on a par with the application of 900 g N/tree in which 50% N was from urea and 50% from castor cake. Total sugars and reducing sugars content in fruit was found the highest in the 900 g N/tree treatment in which 25% N was from urea and 75% N from castor cake.

The investigation was carried out At Navsari Agricultural University, Waghai during 2018-19 to evaluate the effect of foliar application of Zn and Fe on growth, yield and quality of strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) cv. Winter Dawn. The ZnSO4,7H2O and FeSO4,7H2O were used as a source for Zn and Fe, respectively and applied as foliar sprays individually (0.2 % and 0.4%) as well as in combination to the strawberry plants at 30, 60 and 75 days after planting of uniform runners. The plants which received no spraying were treated as control. The results indicated that foliar spraying of 0.4 % ZnSO4,7H2O + 0.2 %FeSO4,7H2O significantly increased the plant spread, number of leaves, number of crowns, leaf area, length of petiole, number of runners, number of flowers, number of fruits, fruit weight, marketable fruit percentage, marketable and total fruit yield over control plants. However, fruits with significantly the highest total soluble solid, acidity and anthocyanin content were recorded with the foliar application of 0.4 % ZnSO4,7H2O + 0.4 % FeSO4,7H2O. However, the micronutrient treatments failed to influence any significant effect on days taken to 50.0 % flowering, fruit firmness and acidity content of the strawberry fruits. All the parameters were recorded minimum in plants which received no spraying.
