International standard system of business performance indicators used by the hotel industry consists of two parts: standard financial ratios - that are accepted and used by companies regardless of industry type, and standard business ratios for the hotel industry - a part that encompasses and reflects the characteristics of the hotel business operation. When defining the indicators and building the systems of indicators, it is necessary to take into consideration that they have to be adjusted to the characteristics of hotel operation, they have to reflect the quality of the business success, they have to be measurable and complement each other, be complete and comparable with similar companies and their business branch. The aim of this paper is to emphasize the importance of the integration of Croatian hotel industry into the European and international standard system for performance measurement. To enter the standard international hotel business information and communication system, certain conditions and standards need to be fulfilled. These conditions and standards are discussed in this paper.

Despite the significant growth of information technologies investments, evidence of their influence on organization performance remains inconclusive. Nowadays it is very important to realize whether expected economic benefits of information technologies investments are being recognized in organizations. Currently organizations can no longer afford basically to lose their money in e-business initiatives without developing and using suitable metrics to measure the effectiveness of such investments and to find out the relationship between e-business and organization performance. The study describes research aimed at determining the exact nature of such e-business performance measurement systems. The basic objective of this study is to discover performance measurement system for evaluating the efficiency of e-business solutions.

This chapter investigates how organizations have been adapting their performance measurement practices in response to their adoption of e-business in their business operations. It aims to identify the features and benefits of an effective e-business performance measurement system. Twelve organizations known to have had some success in developing performance measurement systems suitable for the online environment were studied. The researchers found that these organizations adopted an incremental rather than a radical approach to changing their performance measurement system for e-business, thereby avoiding the costs and disruption associated with the introduction of more complex performance metrics. Secondly, they eschewed the use of best practice recipes (such as the balanced scorecard). The study concludes that although these results may be at odds with the prescriptive generic performance measurement literature, they may be appropriate for the current state of development of e-business.

Background: Rehabilitation hospitals, like other healthcare organizations, are under increasing pressure to apply management tools such as performance measurement systems (PMSs). PMS implementation represents a major challenge as it involves significant organizational change. This study explored how a PMS was used in a rehabilitation hospital and what were the factors explaining its use. Methods: A qualitative longitudinal study was conducted. Two data sources were used: interviews with hospital directors and organizational documents. Semi-structured interviews were conducted pre-implementation (n = 7) and 10 months post-implementation (n = 7) of the PMS. A total of 111 documents produced between 2011 and 2014 were reviewed. The Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) was used as a conceptual framework for data collection and analysis. Results: Decision makers used the PMS mostly for monitoring and accountability purposes and also for promoting their organization’s performance and enhancing the organization’s credibility. It was rarely used to trigger change management projects. Major barriers to PMS use were the lack of planning of the implementation process, available resources and the perceived quality of the developed PMS. Major facilitators for PMS implementation were related to continuous leadership engagement, specific PMS characteristics (perceived advantages, lack of complexity), quality of communications, and a perceived need for a PMS. Some key recommendations are proposed to decision makers that may enhance PMS use. Conclusions: PMS use is influenced by multiple factors, however the positive or negative influence of each factor is context dependent. Key recommendations are proposed to decision makers that may enhance PMS use.

The mixed nature of industrial and service dimension of a hotel including pure service (room service), stock management service (beverage and vendors product), and in-house processing (Food at the restaurant) crafts are a unique business setting for a hotel. In consequence, it creates a challenging task for monitoring the alignment of the strategic plan of the hotel. Hence, the performance of a hotel needs to be measured through a three-dimensional perspective which covers (i) nature of pure service, (ii) product, and (iii) service-product. The measure of the three-dimensional perspective requires empirically validated hotel-specific performance measurement system. The study reviews experts’ views on performance measurement dimensions for the hotel industry in Sri Lanka based on the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). Performance dimensions identified through literature review evaluated by a panel of experts consists of academics, seniors and middle-level management of hotels, government and travel advisory officials, and opinion leaders. The results of AHP on performance dimensions were re-confirmed by applying Content Validity Ratio (CVR) analysis. The AHP order of performance dimensions begins with Competitiveness followed by Finance, Quality, Innovation, Flexibility, Resource utilization, Environment, and Supplier Performance respective. The CVR on AHP order confirmed 6 dimensions on performance measurement for Sri Lankan hotel industry as final selection leaving out environmental and supplier performance from the list of performance dimensions.

AbstractIn this study, we investigate the effects of an enabling versus a coercive performance measurement system on how employees perceive the procedural quality of such systems. In particular, we examine the design characteristics and the development process of performance measurement systems. We hypothesize that an enabling design and an enabling development process, as compared to a coercive design and a coercive development process, lead to perceptions of greater procedural fairness and less red tape. To test our hypotheses, we conduct an experiment with two different samples (a student laboratory sample and an online sample). In general, our results indicate that an enabling performance measurement system design and an enabling system development process both independently increase procedural fairness and decrease red tape. These findings imply that organizations interested in improving the procedural quality of their performance measurement system should focus on designing and developing a system that is enabling rather than coercive.
