This study aims to assess using a smartphone app (DecibelX), as a noise measuring alternative to the more costly traditional use of measuring noise levels with a Sound Level Meter (SLM). The study compares the accuracy of the app to readings taken with a SLM and dosimeter, and also evaluates the app’s performance for pure tone and narrow band noise. And a usability study identifies strengths and weaknesses related to usability of the app.

AbstractPurpose:To determine the decibel sound pressure levels generated during extracorporeal lithotripsy for salivary stones, and if such lithotriptor noise levels have the potential for acoustic trauma.Patients and materials:Minilith SL-1 salivary gland lithotriptor, sound level meter; five patient survey.Methods:Decibel measurements were conducted on the lithotripter-generated sounds, using a sound level meter at specific distances from the active element. In addition, a patient survey was conducted as a cross-reference, to enable comparison of predicted results with actual human perception of sound levels.Results:Sound levels ranged between 68 and 80 dB during treatment sessions, for both the lithotriptor operator and the patient.Conclusion:During routine use, no acoustic trauma is incurred by either the lithotriptor operator or the patient.

Abstract: Noise is all unwanted sounds that can cause discomfort feeling or hearing disturb-ance if be exposed for long enough. Moreover, it can disturb the surrounding environment due to the generated noise. In Manado, many public transportation have audio system to play high volume music, therefore, causing noise. This study was aimed to determine the level of noise in public transportation of Teling to Manado downtown track. This was a descriptive and observational study with a cross sectional design. Samples were 100 vehicles of Teling to Manado downtown track. Noise measurement was performed by using a sound level meter. Data were analyzed by using Microsoft Office Excel. The results obtained 56 vehicles with audio systems and 44 vehicles without audio systems. Among 56 vehicles with audio systems, there were 47 vehicles that had noise levels above the noise threshold value which was 86.05-114.15 dB with exposure time about 8-16 hours. Meanwhile, among 44 vehicles without audio system, there were only 2 vehicles that had noise levels above threshold value which was 88.05-91.8 dB with exposure time about 10-12 hours. In conclusion, there were 49% of public vehicles had noise level above the threshold value.Keywords: noise; public transportation Abstrak: Kebisingan adalah semua bunyi yang tidak dikehendaki yang dapat menimbulkan ketidaknyamanan atau gangguan pendengaran jika terpapar lama. Selain itu kebisingan dapat juga mengganggu lingkungan sekitar. Di Kota Manado, banyak angkutan umum yang menggunakan sistem audio untuk memutar musik dengan volume yang tinggi sehingga menimbulkan kebisingan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui tingkat kebisingan pada angkutan umum jalur Teling-Pusat Kota Manado. Jenis penelitian ialah observasional deskrip-tif dengan desain potong lintang. Sampel berjumlah 100 kendaraan pada jalur Teling-Pusat Kota Manado. Pengukuran kebisingan dilakukan menggunakan alat Sound Level Meter. Data diolah dengan Microsoft Office Excel. Hasil penelitian mendapatkan 56 kendaraan yang menggunakan sistem audio dan 44 kendaraan tidak menggunakan sistem audio. Pada 56 kendaraan yang menggunakan sistem audio terdapat 47 kendaraan dengan tingkat kebisingan di atas nilai ambang batas kebisingan yaitu 86,05-114,15 dB dengan waktu terpapar selama 8-16 jam sedangkan pada 44 kendaraan yang tidak menggunakan sistem audio terdapat 2 kendaraan yang memiliki tingkat kebisingan di atas nilai ambang batas kebisingan yaitu 88,05-91,8 dB dengan waktu terpapar selama 10-12 jam. PURPOSE: The aim of this systematic review is to outline the main methodologies used for measuring noise in classrooms and if the noise levels found are suitable standards. METHODS: A survey of articles published in the last ten years, using six different databases. Were verified 1.088 publications and only eight studies met the inclusion criteria: (a) articles published in the last ten years, (b) articles available in full, (c) studies that have measured the noise in the classrooms of regular schools. Data analysis: descriptive analysis was performed of selected publications. RESULTS: Five studies conducted to measure the noise using a sound level meter. One measurement performed using a dosimeter and two studies used a laptop with audio recording software. In all classrooms, the noise level was higher than allowed. CONCLUSION: Classrooms are noisy environment and there is no standardization regarding the methodology that should be used to measure the noise in these places. Therefore, schools need to be guided constantly about the importance of acoustic adaptation in the classroom.

Undesirable sound for human hearing is called as noise. It was measured at the selected locations of silent, residential and commercial zones of Siddharthanagar Municipality by using Dick Smith Digital Sound Level Meter Q 1362 for ‘A’ weighting in day time at 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM in the month of November and December 2012. The result shows that at each location the Leq noise levels are above than the noise level standard prescribed by Government of Nepal and WHO. Maximum Leq of 81.9 dB(A) was observed at the Bus park of commercial area and minimum 54.5 dB(A) was observed at Medical College area of silent zone. In other places, the Leq lie in the range 56.2 dB(A) to 81.9 dB(A). The study showed that the places lying along highways have high level of noise which is due to bad condition of roads, vehicles and unnecessary use of horns  The Himalayan Physics Vol. 5, No. 5, Nov. 2014 Page: 69-74

Noise can occur anywhere, including at educational institutions. Noise research at educational institutions began to be studied a lot because of the negative impact on the teaching and learning process and disrupt the performance of teachers and students. Some studies show that schools or universities located on the edge of the road, show noise levels that exceed quality standards. This research was conducted at educational institutions located along the east Frontage Road Jl A.Yani Road, Surabaya, by measuring noise levels at 3 locations, in daylighting measurements with 4 measurement times (L1-L4). Data collection and processing was carried out by referring to the quality standard of KEPMENLH No. 48 of 1996. Data was measured using a sound level meter for 10 minutes for each measurement, with a reading every 5 seconds to obtain 120 data. Data processing results are compared with the standard noise level. The noise value at SD Margorejo I / 403 is 82.2 dB, UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya is 79.76 dB, and SMK 3 Surabaya is 80.06 dB. The noise level value has exceeded the established quality standard, which has maximum of 55 dB for the educational intitutions area. The source of noise comes from the activities of motorized vehicles in and around educational institution that is quite crowded. Another cause of the high noise value is the train activities along the east frontage road Jl A.yani Surabaya, as well as the distance of the noise source with research location that relatively close. Regulation (EC) No. 1099/2009 on the protection of animals at the time of killing establishes an obligation to spare animals any avoidable suffering or stress prior to their slaughter. Although it has been pointed out that stressors also include noise, which can cause suffering and affect the quality of the meat, current legislation does not set a limit for environmental noise in slaughterhouses. This study was conducted in three slaughterhouses in central Italy to assess the environmental acoustic level using a smartphone app. The selected, medium-sized slaughterhouses for pigs and cattle were subjected to measurements using a sound-level meter (Noise Meter for iOS) during working hours at the unloading area and lairage, along the chute to the restraining pen, at the time of stunning and at the slaughter hall. For the bovine lines the average values expressed in dB ranged from 76.33 (SD 2.08) to 93.00 (SD 2.14) for abattoir 1, from 75.00 (SD 1.87) to 92.33 (SD 4.89) for abattoir 2 and from 75.67 (SD 7.09) to 88.83 (SD 4.79) for abattoir 3. For the pig lines the average values expressed in dB ranged from 77.50 (SD 3.11) to 100.33 (SD 1.53) for abattoir 1, from 83.00 (SD 2.00) to 99.75 (SD 2.63) for abattoir 2 and from 71.20 (SD 6.49) to 99.50 (SD 1.31) for abattoir 3. Data show that the pig slaughter line was always noisier than the cattle line and the slaughter hall always showed the highest values (i.e. 100 dB), when compared to the unloading area (i.e. 79 dB).

The study was carried out to ascertain the level of noise pollution at five different hatbazars (periodic markets) of Butwal Sub-Metropolitan city by using Dick Smith Digital Sound Level Meter Q 1362 in the specific time from 4:00 PM to 5:00PM in the month of June 2016 on a hatbazar day and a usual day. The result shows that the heighest Leq of 79.8 dB(A) was observed on hatbazar day at Butwal hatbazar. However, on non hatbazar day the highest Leq of 71.9 dB(A) was observed at Purano bus park hatbazar. The lowest Leq of 64.9 dB(A) and 54.6 dB(A) were respectively observed on hatbazar day and non hatbazar day at Majhagaun hatbazar. The study shows that the noise level was found to be higher on hatbazar day as compared to non hatbazar day in all sampling sites. The commercial activities, crowd of people, unnecessary advertisement of goods, blasting of horns increase noise levels in hatbazars.The Himalayan Physics Vol. 6 & 7, April 2017 (61-64)
