This paper report presents the interdisciplinary science showcased at the Young Scientists Retreat 2019. The retreat was jointly organized by young researchers from Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (Portugal) and Institut Curie (France) and took place in Pedrógão Pequeno, a small village in the central region of Portugal in September 2019. Three keynote speakers were invited to present their work, Alfonso Martinez-Arias, Biola Javierre Martínez, and Sara Magalhães. In addition, accepted talks and posters from young researchers were presented at the retreat. Talks were organized in sessions, which included: epigenetics and evolution, immunology, cell biology and metabolism, biostatistics and public health, biophysics, proliferation and morphogenesis, and cell polarity. A post-retreat survey, complied both by IGC attendees as well as a sample of non-attendees, discovered the existence of barriers that prevented the full participation of some junior scientists, especially female postdocs and postdocs with families. We discuss ways in which future retreats could help address this and additional issues common to young researchers in general.

ABSTRACTPlanar cell polarity (PCP) reflects cellular orientation within the plane of an epithelium. PCP is crucial during many biological patterning processes and for organ function. It is omnipresent, from convergent-extension mechanisms during early development through to terminal organogenesis, and it regulates many aspects of cell positioning and orientation during tissue morphogenesis, organ development and homeostasis. Suzanne Eaton used the power of Drosophila as a model system to study PCP, but her vision of, and impact on, PCP studies in flies translates to all animal models. As I highlight here, Suzanne's incorporation of quantitative biophysical studies of whole tissues, integrated with the detailed cell biology of PCP phenomena, completely changed how the field studies this intriguing feature. Moreover, Suzanne's impact on ongoing and future PCP studies is fundamental, long-lasting and transformative.

AbstractIn October of 2014, a meeting jointly organized by the EU Nanosafety Cluster and the COST Action TD 1204, was held on the beautiful island of Ortygia in Syracuse (Sicily). The meeting was specifically conceived to give the opportunity to young researchers in the field of nanotoxicology to present and discuss the results of their research. Presentations were divided into eight sessions over 2 days, reflecting the eight working groups of the Nanosafety Cluster. This report gives a description of the meeting activities and a summary of the data presented there.
