The Coastal Observation and Analysis Branch (COAB) located at the Field Research Facility (FRF) conducts quarterly surveys and post-storm surveys along up to 60 kilometers of coastline within the vicinity of the FRF to assess, evaluate, and provide updated observations of the morphology of the foreshore and dune system. The surveys are conducted using a mobile terrestrial LiDAR scanner coupled with an Inertial Navigation System (INS). Traditionally the surveys coincide with a low tide, exposing the widest swath of visible sediment to the scanner as well as enough wind-sea swell or texture to induce wave breaking upon the interior sandbars. The wave field is measured with X-Band radar which records a spatial time series of wave direction and speed. Data for the survey region was collected using the VZ-2000's mobile, 3D scanning mode where the scanner continuously rotates the line scan 360 degrees as the vehicle progresses forward. Elevation measurements are acquired on all sides of the vehicle except for the topography directly underneath the vehicle. As the vehicle moves forward, the next rotation will capture the previous position's occluded data area. Laser data is acquired in mobile 3D radar mode with a pulse repetition rate of 300kHz, theta resolution of 0.19 degrees and phi resolution of 0.625 degrees. The nearshore wave characteristics and variations in littoral drift (longshore sediment transport; LST) are estimated based on different approaches for four years along the Vengurla coast, with comparable wind-sea and swell energy assessed. The waverider buoy-measured data at 15 m water depth is utilized as the input wave parameters along with the reanalysis model data, and the numerical wave model Delft-3D is used for estimating the nearshore wave parameters. The relative contribution of wind-seas and swells on LST rates are specifically examined. The clear prevalence of west-southwest waves implies the prevalence of south to north longshore sediment transport with net transport varying from 0.19–0.37 × 105 m3/yr. LST is strongly dependent on the breaker angle and a small change in the wave direction substantially alters the LST, and hence reanalysis/model data with coarse resolutions produce large errors (~38%) in the LST estimate. The annual gross LST rate based on integral wave parameters is only 58% considering the wind-seas and swells separately, since the wind-sea energy is comparable to swell energy, and the direction of these two systems differs significantly.

The northern Outer Banks coastal area in North Carolina is well suited to drawing bicycle tourism because of its geography, climate, and attractions. In 2003, the North Carolina Department of Transportation commissioned a study to examine the value of public investment in bicycle facilities that have been constructed in this area over the past 10 years at a cost of approximately $6.7 million. A particular challenge in conducting this study was that tourists visited the Outer Banks for a variety of reasons, not just for cycling. Thus, the collection of information on the amount and nature of bicycling activity and on the spending patterns of bicyclists in the area was critical for the development of an economic impact analysis. Researchers surveyed cyclists using the bicycle facilities (shared-use paths and wide paved shoulders) and obtained data from self-administered surveys of tourists at visitor centers during the primary tourist season. The data collected were then used to determine the economic impact of bicycling visitors to the area. Seventeen percent of tourists to the area reported that they bicycled while there; this translates to 680,000 people annually. The economic impact of bicycling visitors is significant: a conservative annual estimate is $60 million, with 1,407 jobs created or supported per year. This is almost nine times greater than the one-time expenditure required to construct the facilities. Continued investment in bicycle facilities is expected to increase this favorable economic impact and is therefore recommended.
