Ship recycling is gaining attention in Indonesia due to the increase in end-of-life ships and uneconomical nationally flagged ships, and is considered a prospective source of economic development and employment opportunity, and yet conceivably poses a threat to the health and safety of workers and the environment. There are international and national regulations that govern ship-recycling activities to ensure that the hazardous impacts of the industry are minimized. We investigated the disparity between current ship-breaking practices in Indonesia and the requirements of related international and national regulations, with the findings intended for use as a stepping stone to proposing a strategy to establish a green and sustainable ship-recycling industry. A benchmark study of the world’s leading ship-recycling countries was conducted, and a gap analysis was performed by comparing existing international and national regulations with current ship-breaking practices in Indonesia. We identified two types of ship-breaking practices in Indonesia: Conventional environmentally unfriendly ship-breaking method, conducted by most Indonesian ship-breaking yards, and a rather modern, more environmentally friendly method, conducted by ship-repair yards. However, neither of the practices met the requirements of the regulations, and improvements are therefore needed to make the ship-recycling industry more green and sustainable, and to gain international recognition.

Selection of locations for collecting end of life goods is a multi-dimensional problem. In this study, the objective is to propose a hybrid multi-criteria decision model for e-waste collection center location selection problem employing an integrated Pythagorean fuzzy AHP (analytical hierarchy process)-VIKOR (multi-criteria optimization and compromise solution) methodology. A case study from Turkish e-waste recycling industry is conducted in order to verify the success of the proposed methodology. Thirty-nine alternative collection center districts are evaluated and ranked by employing Pythagorean fuzzy VIKOR based on “cost, logistics, environment, socio-culture, and population” and 11 sub-criteria. The study involves 39 e-waste collection location centers, and the model was solved for 50 times for 10 scenarios for each criterion. The results of sensitivity analysis indicate that the evaluation of criteria and determination of their weights have critical effects on the results.

Ship recycling has been considered as a low technology industry. It has been established that there are more than a dozen stake holders in ship recycling having their own interests and roles. Apart from this, most of the ship recycling activities are carried out with poor infrastructure support and without adhering to proper safety and environmental standards. A Knowledge-based support is the need of the hour for improving the status of ship recycling industry. Knowledgebase support in the form of a computer based expert system encompassing entire ship recycling activities is considered as a very useful step in this direction. This paper presents the need for a user friendly expert system for ship recycling process. Two important functions of the expert system have been presented, one for the Administrators, the stake holders at the helm of the ship recycling affairs and second one for the Users, who execute the actual dismantling have been presented.

Ship recycling is labour intensive and takes place largely in developing countries. Worker safety and environmental issues have clearly been focused by international community. In this paper, the hazardous wastes onboard were presented and the impact of these pollutants discharged from ship recycling was analyzed. Then, the current international conventions and standards were introduced. Herein, the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships, 2009 (the Hong Kong Convention), was mentioned in detail, including its background, main content and enforcement. Finally, China’s green ship recycling was investigated and some suggestions were proposed to our government and shipbreaking companies. In summary, ship recycling is facing to great opportunities and challenges. Only through the cooperation of the stakeholders, can ship recycling industry get the sustained development.

The paper deals with the properties of a special mortar using a Waste Paper Sludge Ash (WPSA) from Waste Paper Recycling Industry and Bottom Ash (BA) from Coal Electric Power Stations. Special mortar with some advantages is proposed to give a significant impact for replacing of normal cement mortar. The advantages are approached due to the problem that occurred from collecting raw material such as pollution problems and environmental impact issues. Besides, the raw material sources of cement and sand is limited and this issue engages with the ideas to produce new material in mortar and masonry engineering. A total 72 cubes mortar is cast and determined their properties of chemical and mechanical. The properties of special mortar are compared with other special mortar made of other waste material. The compression strength of special mortar is conducted at the age 3, 7, 28 and 40 days of curing. From the result of chemical properties, it showed that the special mortar created the high compression strength value for all mixes. The compression strength of special mortar is increased by increasing the percentage sand replacement by BA. But, the compression strength is decreased when WPSA is increased. Finally, the special mortar with 100 % BA and 10 % WPSA showed the appropriate proportion for producing special mortar.
