Abstract Graphic organizers are a research based strategy used for facilitating the reading comprehension of expository text. This strategy will be defined and the evolution and supporting evidence for the use of graphic organizers will be discussed. Various types of graphic organizers and resources for SLPs and other educators will also be discussed.

The executed research will permit the creation and design of a handbook with easy-to-read stories that would increase their receptive abilities in a foreign language in the learning process of students with learning disabilities (dyslexia). This academic work has also the aim of analyzing the impact of graphic organizers in the development of reading comprehension accordance  with the level of English of each student. The theoretical foundation is constructed by the contents previously defined in the problem; with specific bibliography for the scientific content. Statistical analyses of information were taken into consideration. These analyses determined the importance of the implementation of a handbook that would include a short and a long text, vocabulary in context, strategies to improve reading skills, and unit assessments to evaluate the knowledge of students in each unit. This will let the students to develop multiple skills with the guidance of the teacher. This innovative material has as a main target to help the learner to decode phonemes and to identify structures of the story through charts and pictures.

This research is carried out to (1) identify whether graphic organizers can improve students’ reading comprehension; and (2) to describe the classroom situation when graphic organizers are employed in instructional process of reading comprehension. The research is adminisitered in two cycles 2014 in the second grade of SMP Muhamadiyah Sekampung, Lampung Timur. The procedure of the research consists of identifying the problem, planning the action, implementing the action, observing the action, and reflecting the result of the research. Qualitative data are collected through interview, observation, questionnaire, and research diary. Quantitative data are collected through test. To analyze qualitative data, the researcher used constant comparative method. It consists of four steps: (1) comparing incidents applicable to each category; (2) Integrating categories and their properties; (3) delimiting the theory; (4) Writing the theory. Meanwhile, to analyze quantitative data, the researcher employed descriptive statistic.    The result of the research shows that using graphic organizers can improve students’ reading comprehension and classroom situation. The improvement on students’ reading comprehension is students are able to find explicit information in a text. The improvement of the classroom situation; (a) students come on time in the class (b) students are more motivated to join the class (c) Students pay more attention in the instructional process. In addition, the improvement also happens to the scores. The mean score increases from 57.56 in the pre-test, 63.34 in the formative test of cycle 1, and 69.56 in the post test of cycle 2

<p>Este estudio pretende responder la pregunta de cómo el uso de diagramas parcialmente completos así como también los resúmenes pueden ayudar a los estudiantes a obtener la idea principal de diferentes textos. El marco teórico hace referencia a los beneficios de usar diagramas y resúmenes para comprender la idea principal de los textos. La información recopilada apoya la premisa de que los diagramas deben ser usados como una estrategia de lectura mientras los resúmenes deben ser usados como una estrategia de post-lectura. Los resúmenes son útiles para los lectores que muestran una comprensión real de los textos así como también para que los docentes evalúen el entendimiento de las ideas principales de diferentes lecturas por parte de sus estudiantes. Además, los resultados muestran que los estudiantes valoran las ventajas de usar ambas estrategias para leer textos en inglés.</p>
