Credit Suisse Group (CSG) is a leading company engaged in global financial services. At the end of 90s IT infrastructure complexity of Credit Suisse has reached a critical situation. The existing IT infrastructure is no longer able to support the required business functionality. This leads to the introduction of an integrated architecture based on Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA). The purpose of this study is to learn how Credit Suisse successfully implements SOA both on a technical and organizational level. Analyses were performed by processing factual and reference data acquired. From the research, the successful implementation is due to clarity of interface, clarity of process, management commitment, and solid technology. Their success does not come easily since they also face obstacles and conflicts on the implementation.

Using a multiple case studies and surveys, this article finds that factors essential to successful Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) implementations include establishing effective SOA governance, establishing SOA registries, starting with a small project, collaboration between business and IT units, strengthening trust among business units, and training. This article also explores business and IT motivations for SOA implementation and the benefits realized from this implementation. The findings from this article can provide a guidance for practitioners on the successful implementation of SOA.

AbstractThe new medical device communication protocol known as IEEE 11073 SDC is well-suited for the integration of (surgical) point-of-care devices, so are the established Health Level Seven (HL7) V2 and Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) standards for the communication of systems in the clinical IT infrastructure (CITI). An integrated operating room (OR) and other integrated clinical environments, however, need interoperability between both domains to fully unfold their potential for improving the quality of care as well as clinical workflows. This work thus presents concepts for the propagation of clinical and administrative data to medical devices, physiologic measurements and device parameters to clinical IT systems, as well as image and multimedia content in both directions. Prototypical implementations of the derived components have proven to integrate well with systems of networked medical devices and with the CITI, effectively connecting these heterogeneous domains. Our qualitative evaluation indicates that the interoperability concepts are suitable to be integrated into clinical workflows and are expected to benefit patients and clinicians alike. The upcoming HL7 Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) communication standard will likely change the domain of clinical IT significantly. A straightforward mapping to its resource model thus ensures the tenability of these concepts despite a foreseeable change in demand and requirements.

Companies’ IT Systems are confronted with constantly changing market conditions, new competitive threats and a growing number of legal regulations. The service-oriented architecture (SOA) paradigm provides a promising way to address these challenges at the level of a company’s IT infrastructure. These challenges, as well as the management of the newly introduced complexity and heterogeneity, are targeted by SOA Governance approaches. In recent years, a number of concrete frameworks for SOA Governance addressing these issues have been proposed. There is no holistic approach considering all proposed elements, consolidating them in order to form a universally applicable model. In this contribution, we motivate SOA Governance, investigate and compare different approaches, identify common concepts, and derive a generic model for governance of Service-oriented Architectures.

A business process displays complexity as a result of multiple interactions of its internal components and interaction between the process and its environment. To manage complexity and foster flexibility of business process management (BPM), we present the DCAR architecture for developing complex BPM systems, which includes decomposition of complex processes (D); coordination of interactive activities (C); awareness of dynamic environments (A); and resource selection and coordination (R). On the other hand, computing technologies, such as object-oriented programming, component-based development, agent-oriented computing, and service-oriented architecture have been applied in modeling and developing complex systems. However, there is considerable ambiguity involved in differentiating between these overlapping technologies and their use in developing BPM systems. No explicit linkage has been established between the requirement of complex BPM and the supporting technologies. In this study, we use the DCAR architecture as the foundation to identify the BPM requirements for employing technologies in developing BPM systems. Based on an examination of the both sides (BPM requirements and supporting technologies), we present a clear picture of business process complexity with a systemic approach for developing complex BPM systems by using appropriate computing technologies.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the main organizational factors that contribute to the successful implementation of business process reengineering (BPR) in the Egyptian banking sector. These factors include management commitment, information technology (IT) infrastructure, people management, change readiness, centralization and formalization. Design/methodology/approach The key organizational enablers were identified through an extensive literature review. Then, statistical analysis was carried out based on data collected, using a questionnaire instrument, from 184 managers employed in 38 banks operating in Egypt. Findings The results of the study indicate that management commitment, IT infrastructure, people management, change readiness and organizational structure with a low degree of formalization are critical enablers for implementing a successful BPR program within the Egyptian banking sector. Practical implications The results may support managers of banks in identifying and assessing the influence of integrating organizational factors that facilitate or hinder the successful implementation of BPR. Originality/value Since 2004, the Egyptian banking system has involved in major reform programs and many BPR efforts. Much research effort is required to investigate the BPR projects within the Egyptian banks in order to develop a concrete base of knowledge and understanding of the nature of BPR and factors that support its successful implementation. Moreover, there is an insufficiency of empirical studies regarding the implementation of BPR within the Egyptian service sector. The current study fills this gap by exploring and examining the main organizational factors affecting BPR implementation in a developing country.

In order to continue to fulfill its mission in the information technology age, the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) has made the decision to develop the Electronic Records Archives (ERA) system. One of the goals is to provide to the archivists a modernized system with automatic workflow that can streamline the digital archive business process. For an archival system, Ingest is one of the core components. As part of the ingest process, this component would allow the record Producer to negotiate submission agreement before transferring digital materials into the system. Within the framework of a service-oriented architecture with business process management, the ERA system uses XML to represent business objects and metadata. In this paper, we will show how the synergetic combination of XForms and Genericode makes the system agile and responsive to business user requirements. Furthermore, the approach fits well with ERA's design principle to use international and industry standards, and facilitates the integration of XML business objects and the electronic records metadata. We believe that the standard-based approach of XForms+Genericode exposed in this paper can be generalized to develop any e-Forms system with a set of control values and vocabularies.

Healthcare is an increasingly collaborative enterprise involving many individuals and organizations that coordinate their efforts toward promoting quality and efficient delivery of healthcare. To these ends, today, more than any other point in time, increased reliance is being placed on interoperability among healthcare information systems (HIS) which have been developed as monolithic, stand-alone systems without significant interfaces between them. Enabling heterogeneous HIS to interact within a Service-oriented architecture (SOA), such as a Web Services architecture, can help healthcare organizations to consistently deliver sustainable business value, with increased agility and cost effectiveness, in line with changing business needs. However, in the context of a SOA approach, issues of semantic interoperability still remain unresolved while new challenges arise regarding web service interoperability. This paper presents a mediation framework which provides a uniform interface to the underlying HIS and is accessible via Android-enabled devices. The proposed framework is based on the agent paradigm for both healthcare process management and management of interactions among the participating systems. The healthcare processes and all interactions involved in each process are described according to the workflow metaphor.

Cloud computing technologies are being used highly successfully in large-scale businesses. Therefore, it is useful for governments to adopt cloud-driven multi-channel, and multiple devices to offer their services such as e-tax, e-vote, e-health, etc. Since these applications require open, flexible, interoperable, collaborative, and integrated architecture, service-oriented architecture approach can be usefully adopted to achieve flexibility and multi-platform and multi-channel integration. However, its adoption needs to be systematic, secure, and privacy-driven. In this context, micro services architecture (MSA), a direct offshoot of SOA, is also a highly attractive mechanism for building and deploying enterprise-scale applications. This chapter proposes a systematic framework for cloud e-government services based on the cloud software engineering approach and suggests a cloud adoption model for e-government, leveraging the benefits of MSA patterns. The proposed model is based on a set of evaluated application characteristics that, in turn, support emerging IT-based technologies.

Business process management (BPM) is considered to be an effective way to improve their business agility for the enterprises. But after analysis, it found that the existing BPM system has been difficult to meet the needs of enterprises development. It analyzed the theory and technology of Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) and BPM, and presented the BPM system solution based on SOA. Finally, it took case with a process improvement, which described the process of implementing a BPM system based on SOA. Practice has proved that the combination of SOA and BPM can greatly improve the business agility.
