Purpose This paper aims to investigate the impact of business process reengineering on organizational performance in the Malaysian electronics manufacturing industry during the coronavirus pandemic. It also studied the moderating effect of strategic thinking on the relationship between these two concepts. Design/methodology/approach Data of 103 samples are obtained from a survey of the electronics manufacturing companies listed in the Federation of Malaysia Manufacturers’ directory. Data is analysed using partial least squares structural equation modelling. Findings The results show that business process reengineering dimensions, i.e. top management commitment, organizational readiness for change, information technology capabilities and people management have significant positive impacts on organizational performance; whereas organizational structure and other abovementioned dimensions were found to have a much stronger impact on organizational performance whilst strategic thinking exists in the organization. Practical implications As the studied firms have been affected by the pandemic, the results will be useful for managers of the firms in the Malaysian electronics manufacturing industry by highlighting the dimensions of business process reengineering that can have a positive and significant impact on the organizational performance and by advising them to incorporate strategic thinking. Originality/value The results extend the literature on business process reengineering dimensions, which impact organizational performance by empirically testing the relationship of those dimensions on the performance, with strategic thinking as a moderating variable in Malaysian electronics manufacturing companies. From the knowledge, studying strategic thinking as a moderator in the relationship between business process reengineering and organizational performance in electronics manufacturing companies in Malaysia is unique, especially during a global crisis, i.e. the pandemic.

With today's highly competitive and rapidly changing world economic marketplace, firms must adopt business process reengineering to sustain their competitive advantages and increase profitability. BPR is one of the most popular ongoing change management theories as a solution for firms to improve their performance significantly, upraise their efficiencies, and gain a competitive advantage in this constantly developing and changing world. BPR usually leads to essential organizational changes in terms of structure and management processes. This paper aims to explore the change management process through BPR implementation in Radiant Optoelectronics Company. At the same time, focusing on six interventions, including Open systems planning, Trans-organizational development (TD), Business process reengineering (BPR), Business Restructuring, Work Redesign, and Socio-technical Systems Approach (STS). Each intervention is accompanied by its definitions, advantages and disadvantages, and comparison and contrast with other interventions. These interventions differ from each other primarily in terms of IT innovation, communication environment, and application in product design and performance. This report recommends BPR as the best intervention for Radiant Company to accomplish its goals because it emphasizes cost reduction, product and service quality, and organizational system speed. Besides, there is evidence that companies that implement BPR enjoy significant benefits in improved customer satisfaction, productivity, and profitability. However, this study suggests that the company must be keen on this strategy since it is time-consuming and may harm people's jobs if proper plans are not done before implementation. Other issues that the company might experience due to poor planning include lack of sustained management commitment and leadership, unrealistic scope and expectations, resistance to change, and higher demands.

Organizational restructuring, or, more fully, organizational redesign, is a commonly proposed solution for major organizational problems. It should only be considered after a thorough analysis of existing conditions and desired outcomes. If, in fact, redesign is an appropriate change technology, it should be approached thoughtfully and comprehensively, with attention to both structure and organizational processes. There are criteria for a good design of an organization and process criteria for a redesign process that could be followed in any redesign effort. This should be a broad, participative process for engaging many of the staff affected through structures such as a steering committee and design teams. Business process reengineering is a redesign strategy that has a very mixed, and probably overall negative, reputation. While some of its techniques can be used positively and ethically, applications of business process reengineering principles should be considered very thoughtfully. Ethical considerations are important when staff layoffs are considered.

There are enormous software applications which are developed for the usage of the software users. The software user may be categorized as public users who use online services through internet, and the private users who use the specific software inside a specific organization only. The private users can be the business organizations, Educational institutions, Health care centers and other government organizations. Each organization has a specific requirement on the base of which the software and the customer relationship management frame work has to be designed. Organization specific software are developed, tested and delivered to the service users by the software development companies and where under maintenance by the development team in the timely manner. At times, when these registered users are in need of alterations and modifications in the software which are used, then the business process reengineering is required to be done. Thus business process reengineering plays a vital role in the maintainability and the sustainability of the software product based on the user requirement. To create an effective Business process Re-engineering Framework, the user (or) the stakeholder requirements are considered as the prerequisite. Based on the requirement the software product would be re-engineering,  the stakeholders requirements has to be initially preprocessed and the stake holders has to be grouped and prioritized with the ranking of the requirement modules that has to be implemented. Finally the risk assessment has to be done to estimate the critical conditions or the changes that would be faced while re- engineering and the requirements will be clustered for effective execution.
