Study aim: The aim of the study was to assess blood morphology, electrolyte level as well as indices of kidney function and the activity of selected liver enzymes determining liver function before and after exiting the water in a winter swimmer (“Walrus”) from the “Kaloryfer” (“Radiator”) Krakow Winter Swimming Club during the whole winter bathing season. Materials and methods: The subject of research was a winter swimmer from the “Radiator” Krakow Winter Swimming Club  a 53-year-old male. Blood was collected from the subject: at the beginning of the winter swimming season, during (five times) and at the end of the season (each time before and after getting out of the water); time maintaining in water: 10 minutes. Results: Analysing the average values of the indices before and after exiting the water, statistically significant increases were noted in AST [U/L] by 6.4% and LDH [U/L] by 2.45%, as well as a decrease in Na+ [mmol/l] by 1.14%, Clˉ [mmol/l] by 1.78% and urea [mmol/l] by 3.64%. Conclusions: Regular baths taken by the winter swimmers in cold water did not affect blood morphology indices and did not cause pathological changes in kidney profile. Furthermore, slight fluctuations regarding the concentration of electrolytes in the blood serum and changes in the hepatic profile additionally “externalised” health problems, which appeared prior to winter swimming.

Abstract Background : Two-dimensional speckle tracking (2DST) technique has been validated in numerous animal species, but neither studies of repeatability, nor measurements after exercise or in animals with cardiac disease have been reported in goats. Therefore, the aim of this study was to validate this technique in goats for further clinical and experimental applications in this species. This study was divided into several steps. First, a standardized echocardiographic protocol including several right parasternal short-axis views at papillary muscles level was performed three times at one-day intervals in ten healthy adult unsedated Saanen goats to test repeatability and variability of 2DST measurements. Then, the same measurements were performed immediately before and after a standardized exercise on treadmill in seven of the goats, and at 24h after induction of an experimental ischemic cardiomyopathy in five of the goats, to test the reliability of the technique to assess physiological and pathological changes. Results: Global and regional measurements of radial and circumferential strain and strain rate, radial displacement, rotation and rotation rate were obtained. Comparisons were performed using ANOVA II (p<0.05). Caprine 2DST measurements demonstrated a good repeatability for global measurements except for the late diastolic peak of the circumferential and radial strain rate. Segmental 2DST measurements were also repeatable except for the anteroseptal segment diastolic peaks and several rotation and rotation rate measurements. Overall variability was moderate to high. Segmental and global peak values obtained after exercise and after myocardial ischemia were significantly different than curves obtained at baseline. Conclusions: The results of this study are consistent with those previously described in other animal species and humans. 2DST echocardiography is a valid technique to evaluate physiological and pathological changes in myocardial function in goats, despite the technical limitations observed in this species.

Background: Lung cancer can be treated with surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapy and palliative care. Palliative therapy is applied for inoperable lung cancer as it induces tumour necrosis. PH of tumour tissue is acidic; application of sodium bicarbonate (SB) into lung cancer locally via bronchoscopy can change its core pH, which may lead to tumour destruction. We aimed to study the ultrastructural characteristics of lung cancer and to assess the destructive effects of sodium bicarbonate 8.4% local injection on tumour tissue integrity by light and electron microscopies. Methods: This study was conducted on 21 patients with central bronchial carcinoma diagnosed according to WHO classification 2015. Three bronchoscopic biopsies were taken; two biopsies before and one after injection of sodium bicarbonate 8.4% solution of 20 ml via transbronchial needle. All biopsies were examined by both light and electron microscopes. The first biopsy was examined to diagnose the tumour morphologically with and without immunostaining. Second and third biopsies were taken before and after SB 8.4% injection to compare pathological changes in tumour tissue integrity as well as cellular ultra-structures. Different lung cancer pathological types were included in the study. Results: Tumour tissue integrity and pathological changes were examined in biopsies before and after injection of sodium bicarbonate 8.4%. Extensive necrosis in all cell types of lung cancer was seen after injection of SB; this important finding was delineated by both light and electron microscopies. Conclusion: Preliminary ultrastructural study of small biopsy of lung tumor has a complementary role to both morphological and immunohistochemical studies. Local injection of sodium bicarbonate into lung cancer induces extensive necrosis that may reflect its important therapeutic role in lung cancer.

Purpose. To apply massage therapy accompanied with stretching exercises for treatment of mammary gland hyperplasia, evaluate the clinical outcome in patients, and estimate the therapy as a novel treatment method for mammary hyperplasia.Methods. 28 adult female patients were selected and treated with massage therapy and stretching exercises focusing on skeleton muscles of chest, abdomen, and axilla. The mammary gland oxyhemoglobin (OxyHb) and deoxyhemoglobin (DeoxyHb) levels were detected before and after treatment after 15, 30, and 45 days.Results. In this cohort, pretreatment OxyHb (mean ± SD) is1.32±0.14(medium-high), and DeoxyHb is0.87±0.13(normal). All patients were clinically diagnosed with benign mammary gland hyperplasia and mastitis. The posttreatment OxyHb levels are1.23±0.09(normal-medium, 15-day),1.16±0.08(normal, 30-day), and1.05±0.04(normal, 45-day), and DeoxyHb levels are0.90±0.11(normal, 15-day),0.94±0.18(normal, 30-day), and0.98±0.12(normal, 45-day). Patients were diagnosed with decreased hyperplasia 15 and 30 days after treatment and with no symptom of hyperplasia in mammary gland 45 days after treatment.Conclusion. Mammary gland hyperplasia is closely correlated with pathological changes of skeletal muscles and could be significantly improved by massage therapy and stretching exercises targeting neighboring skeletal muscles.

Objective: To describe the results of asymmetric bilateral medial rectus retroposition in unilateral Duane retraction syndrome-this type I. Method: This is a retrospective study involving 18 patients, mean age 11.2 years (3-37 years) with unilateral Duane retraction syndrome?s type who were operated in 2009 up to 2011 year. The aim was to investigate the existence of ocular torticollis, size deviation before and after surgery and presence of amblyopia, anisometropia, type of refractive errors and lateralization. Results: All 18 patients were surgically treated by asymmetric retroposition of internal rectus (for 1-2mm more on the healthy eye). All patients preoperatively de-monstrated ocular torticollis. Size of mean preoperative deviation was +22.2 pD of primary angle PD and +46 pD of secondary angle. Postoperative finding: deviation of> +10 PD is noted to the presence of mild torticollis in one patient. Intermediate follow-up period was 9.8 months. Unilateral Duane?s syndrome is common among members of women (67%) compared to males (33%). Lateralization of Duane?s syndrome is more common in the left eye compared to the right (83% vs. 17%). Amblyopia was present in two patients and anisometropia (11.1%). As for refractive errors: hyperopia was found in 9 patients (50%), hypermetric astigmatism in 7 cases (39%), myopia and 1 (5.5%) and emmetropia (5.5%). None of the patients had no pathological changes in the fundus and anterior segment. Conclusion: Asymmetric bilateral medial rectus retroposition is extremely effective in the treatment of ocular torticollis and esotropia in patients with unilateral Duane retraction syndrome-this type I.

Introduction: The influence of glucocorticosteroid therapy on fetal lung maturation is evident but little is known about its effects on parameters of fetal venous circulation. Objective. The aim of the study was to assess the influence of direct intramuscular (i.m.) fetal corticosteroid therapy (CST) on parameters of fetal venous circulation which indicates a degree of fetal hypoxia. Method. The prospective study was conducted at the Institute of Gynaecology and Obstetrics during 2001. We evaluated the influence of direct i.m. fetal single dose dexamethasone (2 mg/ kg estimated fetal weight by sonographic examination) on foetal ductus venosus (DV) and vena cava inferior (VCI) velocities in 49 fetuses 24 hours before and after therapy. Results. There is positive correlation with the statistical significance in systolic/diastolic ratio (S/D) in DV before and after the corticotherapy r=0.366; p=0.018. Reverse flow during contraction of the right atrium in DV was found in 55.6% of fetuses after CST. Reverse flow during the contraction of the right atrium in VCI was found in 3 fetuses before CST and in 4 fetuses after CST. We found positive correlation without statistical significance between the vena cava pre-load indices before and after CST (r=0.127; p= 0.428). There is positive correlation with the statistical significance between systolic flow in VCI before and after CST (r=0.478; p=0.002). Conclusion. Corticosteroid therapy influences parameters of fetal venous circulation. Its influence depends on duration of fetal hypoxia. The parameters of fetal venous circulation can be a predictor of the perinatal outcome. .
