AbstractSilver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) are one of the most common nanomaterials present in nanotechnology-based products. Here, the physical chemical properties of Ag NPs suspensions of 44 nm, 84 nm and 100 nm sizes synthesized in our laboratory were characterized. The NM-300 material (average size of 17 nm), supplied by the Joint Research Centre Nanomaterials Repository was also included in the present study. The Ag NPs potential cytotoxicity was tested on the Balb3T3 cell line by the Colony Forming Efficiency assay, while their potential morphological neoplastic transformation and genotoxicity were tested by the Cell Transformation Assay and the micronucleus test, respectively. After 24 h of exposure, NM-300 showed cytotoxicity with an IC50 of 8 µM (corresponding to 0.88 µg/mL) while for the other nanomaterials tested, values of IC50 were higher than 10 µM (1.10 µg/mL). After 72 h of exposure, Ag NPs showed size-dependent cytotoxic effect with IC50 values of 1.5 µM (1.16 µg/mL) for NM-300, 1.7 µM (1.19 µg/mL) for Ag 44 nm, 1.9 µM (0.21 µg/mL) for Ag 84 nm and 3.2 µM (0.35 µg/mL) for Ag 100 nm. None of the Ag NPs tested was able to induce either morphological neoplastic transformation or micronuclei formation.

The popular use of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) in commercial textile products that inhibit odor- and/or infection-causing bacteria has continuously raised concerns about their washing durability. The poor durability not only deteriorates the antibacterial performance, but also results in unwanted leaching of NPs into washing solutions. In this study, we showed how the incorporation location of Ag NPs—interior vs. exterior of cotton fiber—governs their durability against consecutive simulated home launderings. The superior washing durability of interior NPs was confirmed. The Ag losses after 50 laundering cycles for interior and exterior systems were 16% and 63% in water and 24% and 78% in detergent solution, respectively. The cotton fabric containing interior NPs predominantly released ionic Ag, whereas the fabric containing exterior NPs released particulate Ag.

Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Research Division, Ruakura Agricultural Research Centre, Hamilton, New Zealand (Received 17 April 1978) An increase in the plasma concentration of luteinizing hormone (LH) occurs in response to castration in bull calves aged 1–4 months; this response is of similar magnitude to that seen in cattle castrated as adults (Odell, Hescox & Kiddy, 1970). In bull calves castrated at birth, however, there is no increase in the plasma concentration of LH until after 28 days of age (Bass, Peterson, Payne & Jarnet, 1977). In other species a range of responses to castration has been reported. Gonadectomy of male guinea-pigs 0–35 days after birth produces an increase in the plasma concentration of LH similar to that observed in guineapigs castrated as adults (Donovan, ter Haar, Lockhart, MacKinnon, Mattock & Peddie, 1975). In contrast, the castration of young male macaques does not cause an immediate increase in the

The simple and industrially adjustable process of silver nanoparticles deposition on cotton fabric followed by coating with γ-methacryloxypropyl trimethoxysilane (MPS), as well as the properties of obtained nanocomposite has been investigated. Silver nanoparticles were prepared through the reduction of silver nitrate with sodium borohydrate and deposited on cellulose fabric. In order to stabilize obtained nanostructured material and improve its properties, the fabric was treated by immersion in cross linkable MPS. The morphology of the finished fabrics was characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). It has been determined that process does not impair nanocharacter of silver particles and yield uniform distribution throughout the fabric surface. The concentration of Ag in the fabric samples was determined by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectroscopy (ICP-MS). The average deposited amount of nanoparticles was found to be 63 ppm and 48 ppm for samples without and those with MPS, respectively. The character of obtained polysiloxane coating was examined using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The presence of SiOSi bonds on the cellulose surface pointed out to self-condensation between silanol groups. Differential Thermal and Thermo-Gravimetric Analysis (DTA/TGA) revealed that MPS deposited on fabric provided modification of thermal properties. The change of the surface properties after the modification was ascertained by contact angle measurements. The antimicrobial activity of the antibacterial finish on the cotton fabric, expressed as bacterial reduction efficiency, has been determined. Bacterial reduction of at least 88.5% against both, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, has been obtained.
