Ethical Leadership Behaviors of School Principals from Teachers’ Perspectives in Hafr Al Batin

This study aimed to analyze the teachers’ expectations related to the school principals’ ethical behaviors and the frequency of the school principals’ performing ethical leadership behaviors based on the teachers’ perceptions. Data were collected through the Teacher Ethical Expectation Scale (ÖEBÖ) and School Principal’s Performing Ethical Leadership Scale (PELBS) which were developed by the researchers for the aim of this research. The sample of the study consisted of 541 participant teachers selected from the population of the teachers working at public schools located in Sakarya, province of Turkey, during the 2018-2019 academic year. According to the teachers’ perceptions, it was found that the teachers’ expectations of the school principals’ ethical behaviors and the frequency of the principals’ performing ethical leadership behaviors were quite high. It was also seen that there was a significant positive relationship at a low level because of the path analysis, which was done to predict the school principals’ performing ethical behaviors through the teachers’ expectations on ethical behaviors. It was concluded that the ethical behaviors from the school principals expected by the teachers as the independent variable were seen to explain 8.6% of the variance in ethical behaviors performed by the school principals as the dependent variable.

This study aimed to reveal whether the ethical leadership behaviors of school principals have an impact on organizational health. The relational survey model, one of the quantitative research methods, was preferred as the research method. There were 402 teachers working in public schools in different districts on the Anatolian Side of Istanbul voluntarily participated in the universe of the research in the 2019-2020 academic year. According to the research findings, a positive relationship was found between organizational health and ethical leadership. As the ethical leadership behaviors of school principals increase, the organizational health of the school increases positively. Therefore, it can be said that the ethical behaviors preferred by the principals in the management process are important for the high level of organizational health in schools.

PurposeThe aim of this research is to examine the public leadership (PL) behaviors of principals working in public schools and its effect on teacher motivation (M) and job satisfaction (JS). Moreover, the mediating role of JS in the relationship between PL and M is also explored.Design/methodology/approachThis research is quantitative and designed in relational survey model conducted with 327 teachers working in Siirt/Turkey in 2020. In the research, Public Leadership Scale, Teacher Motivation Scale and Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire were used. Descriptive analyses were used in data analysis. Moreover, mediating role of job satisfaction between public leadership and teacher motivation was tested.FindingsAccording to the results, the public leadership behaviors of school principals, motivation and job satisfaction of teachers are high according to teacher opinions. Additionally, public leadership behaviors of school principals have an effect on teacher motivation and job satisfaction. On the other hand, this study found a negative effect between public leadership and motivation when the effect of job satisfaction is controlled. The possible reasons for this situation were discussed in term of cultural differences.Practical implicationsThe results of this study imply that the leadership behaviors of school principals have cultural elements. Future research should be careful in measuring the political loyalty dimension of the public leadership and should take cultural element into consideration.Originality/valueAlthough there are many types of leadership, the type of leadership differs depending on the purpose of the organization, environmental conditions and culture. The lifestyle of the society, current developments and the structure of the organization are effective in interpreting the leadership needed in the organization. When looking at the models created about leadership in organizations, the effect of this type of leadership on organizational behavior is generally tried to be explained. This is also the case for motivation or job satisfaction. Therefore, this study also focuses on the effect of public leadership in explaining the job satisfaction and motivation of employees in educational organizations. However, another distinctive aspect of this research is that the cultural structure of the society is emphasized in the model to be created.

Empowering employees is one of the recent administrative trends in human resource development, which is responsible for increasing productivity and improving quality and profitability in organizations. In order to permit the organization to achieve this, it needs to adopt an ethical leadership style that provides the appropriate climate to support the empowerment of workers. The study aimed to investigate the impact of ethical leadership on employees’ empowerment at Al- Azhar University in Assuit. The research problem of the current study was represented in the following inquiry: Does ethical leadership affects employees’ empowerment at Al- Azhar University in Assuit branch? The study relied on the descriptive-analytical approach. The researcher used Pearson correlation to measure the strength of association between the two variables of this study (ethical leadership and employees’ empowerment) and their dimensions and direction of the association. The researcher used simple regression analysis to test the hypotheses and relationships of the independent and dependent variables. The study sample included (317) people from Al- Azhar University where data was collected using a survey list prepared for the purpose of the study and only 255 questionnaires were received, rates about 80%. And the study reached several results; the most important of which is that the degree of exercise for the two study variables came with an average degree for each of them, where the average value for ethical leadership reached (3.57) and for employee empowerment the average was (3.53). Furthermore, it was found that there was a significant effect of ethical leadership behaviors on employees’ empowerment, as the value of (T) was (1.98), which is significant at the level of (0.01). The study recommended the need to support the values ​​of ethical leadership ​​and their basic dimensions through holding training courses and workshops to spread the tenet ​​of ethical leadership in the organization and its values as well. Last but not least, we recommend the organizations to adopt an effective system that permit them to monitor the application of the concept of employees’ empowerment.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between ethical leadership and group-level performance outcomes and show that group value congruence and group trust play pivotal mediating roles in the relationship between ethical leadership and work group performance outcomes. Design/methodology/approach To examine the proposed model, survey data from 116 branches of a baked goods and beverages chain located in Northern Taiwan were analyzed. Findings The results revealed that ethical leadership was positively and significantly related to group in-role performance and group helping behavior; the relationship was fully mediated by group value congruence and group trust after controlling for idealized influence leadership. Research limitations/implications This study features a cross-sectional study design, thus limiting the accuracy of inferences about causality. Practical implications The results of the current study revealed that ethical leadership behaviors enhance group trust. Hence, these leadership behaviors could be among the best and most appropriate practices to be implemented in China and Taiwan. Originality/value The data suggested that ethical leadership was associated with not only individual-level behavior but also group-level performance. Furthermore, this paper also uncovered the mediation mechanism through which ethical leadership enhances group performance.

<p>The purpose of the current study is to determine whether primary and middle school teachers’ perceptions of school principals’ change leadership behaviors are correlated with their organizational commitment. The sample of the study was comprised of 252 teachers working at 56 primary and middle schools in Birecik district of Şanlıurfa province. To collect data, “Change Leadership Scale” and “Organizational Commitment Scale” were used. Research data were analyzed using means, standard deviations, correlation analysis and regression analysis. It was concluded that school principals exhibited change leadership behaviors at moderate level (partly agree), and teachers’ organizational commitment perceptions were at moderate level (partly agree) as well. Regression analysis indicated that school principals’ change leadership behaviors were significant and positive predictors of teachers’ organizational commitment. Based on the findings of the research, it can be recommended that school principals must display democratic management, involve teachers in the decisions made regarding change and provide them with required environment and conditions for their professional development in order to enhance teachers’ organizational commitment.</p><p> </p><p><strong>Özet</strong></p><p>Bu araştırmanın amacı ilkokul ve ortaokullarda görev yapan öğretmenlerin, okul müdürlerinin değişim liderliği davranışlarına ilişkin algılarının, örgütsel bağlılıklarıyla ilişkisi olup olmadığını belirlemektir. Bu araştırmanın örneklemini, Şanlıurfa İli Birecik İlçesi’ ndeki 56 ilköğretim okulunda görev yapan 252 öğretmen oluşturmuştur. Araştırmada veri toplamak amacıyla “Değişim Liderliği Ölçeği” ve “Örgütsel Bağlılık Ölçeği” kullanılmıştır. Araştırma verileri ortalama, standart sapma, korelasyon analizi, regresyon analizi ile çözümlenmiştir. Sonuç olarak; okul müdürlerinin değişim liderliği davranışlarını orta (kısmen katılıyorum düzeyinde) düzeyde sergiledikleri, öğretmenlerin örgütsel bağlılıkları ise orta (katılıyorum düzeyinde) düzeyde olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Regresyon analizleri sonucunda okul müdürlerinin değişim liderliği davranışlarının öğretmenlerin örgütsel bağlılığını anlamlı ve pozitif olarak yordadığı görülmüştür. Araştırma bulgularına dayalı olarak öğretmenlerin örgütsel bağlılıklarını arttırmak için okul yöneticilerinin demokratik bir yönetim sergilemeleri, değişim ile ilgili alınan kararlarda öğretmenlerin katılımlarının sağlanması ve mesleki gelişmelerini sağlamak ve sürdürmek için öğretmenlere gerekli ortam ve olanakların sağlanması önerilebilir.</p>
