Typical examples of four different speech disorders—voice, cleft palate, articulation, and stuttering—were ranked for severity by kindergarten, first-grade, second-grade, and third-grade teachers and by public school speech clinicians. Results indicated that classroom teachers, as a group, moderately agreed with speech clinicians regarding the severity of different speech disorders, and classroom teachers displayed significantly more agreement among themselves than did the speech clinicians.

Job interviews are significant barriers for individuals with autism spectrum disorder because these individuals lack good nonverbal communication skills. We developed a job interview training program using an android robot. The job interview training program using an android robot consists the following three stages: (1) tele-operating an android robot and conversing with others through the android robot, (2) a face-to-face mock job interview with the android robot, and (3) feedback based on the mock job interview and nonverbal communication exercises using the android robot. The participants were randomly assigned to the following two groups: one group received a combined intervention with “interview guidance by teachers and job interview training program using an android robot” ( n = 13), and the other group received an intervention with interview guidance by teachers alone ( n = 16). Before and after the intervention, the participants in both groups underwent a mock job interview with a human interviewer, who provided outcome measurements of nonverbal communication, self-confidence, and salivary cortisol. After the training sessions, the participants who received the combined interview guidance by teachers and the job interview training program using an android robot intervention displayed improved nonverbal communication skills and self-confidence and had significantly lower levels of salivary cortisol than the participants who only received interview guidance by teachers. The job interview training program using an android robot improved various measures of job interview skills in individuals with autism spectrum disorder.

Background : Optimal time of  Cleft palate repair is during the 10 to 12  month of age. In this time produce far natural results in terms of speech because it enabled the maturation of scar tissue postoperatively. The soft palate must function properly before the patient starts learning to talk, otherwise speech disorders such as persistent rhinolalia aperta might arise. In pediatric patients, the role of parents is very important on adherence to therapy. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study. The first study group was parents of patients who had surgical repair before two years old and the second group was the parents of patients who had repair after two years old. We compared age, monthly income, education level, number of children, and residential distance from Surabaya of the two groups. Results : The data of this study were obtained from the medical records of patients with cleft lip surgery at CLP Center Surabaya in 2015th – 2017th with total of 358 patients, 172 were female and 186 were male. 52 patients with delayed cleft palate surgery. Patients’ parents in both groups were mostly 31-40 years old, were high school graduated, has one child, earned less than 1.5 million rupiah a month, and lived less than 100 kms from Surabaya. From the statistical results, parent’s income has the strongest correlation with the patient’s age in cleft palate surgery (-2.7). A negative coefficient means that the less parent’s income, the more patient likely had delayed cleft palate surgery. While other factors found weak and very weak correlations. Conclusions: The results form patient's parents' interview, concluded that besides economic factors, the lack of information cleft palate treatment is the key factors that contributed to the delay of cleft palate repair. The education level does not affect the delay in cleft palate surgery, because even in high educated parents, sometimes they don’t understand the stages of cleft lip and palate treatment. This study emphasized the necessity to educate about the stages of surgery by primary care physicians, to minimize delays.

By investigating the influences of 2 types of self-confidence, we tested the assumption that people always prefer a large assortment over a small one when offered a choice of 2 sizes of assortment. Participants were 194 students who were randomly assigned to a high or low specific self-esteem condition, a high or low general self-esteem condition, and a public or private social influence condition group. The results of our experiment demonstrated that people with high specific self-confidence perceived options as distinctive, and preferred a large assortment. However, people with low general self-confidence felt high social anxiety, and preferred a large assortment only when social influence was salient. Under this condition, low general self-confidence also strengthened the effect of specific self-confidence on assortment preference. Implications of our findings are discussed.

This study is a qualitative exploration of the experiences of immigrants who completed a health care aide training program that combined occupational skills and ESL training. The focus was the employment barriers and personal benefits associated with program completion. Data were collected through structured interviews with nine participants, eight of whom were women, which were then transcribed and analyzed for central themes. The interview data were supplemented with document data consisting of information from application forms and intake assessment tests. The findings revealed that participation in the training program had a major impact on the employment, identities, and settlement of program participants. The skills and language training improved the employment prospects of the individuals, although many had to overcome such employment barriers as the need to work on call, conflicts between domestic responsibilities and work outside the home, and transportation limitations. Many participants also spoke of the importance of learning job-search skills and the personal significance of having an occupational identity. Finally, successful completion of the program increased the self-confidence and autonomy of the individuals, which in turn aided their settlement and integration into Canadian society. The article concludes with recommendations for future research in this area, as well as pedagogical interventions to assist participants with their ongoing language learning, job aspirations, and settlement.
