Abstract The study demonstrates the implementation of Jaya Algorithm (JA) to optimize the Irrigation Pipe Distribution Network (IPDN) for the networks of the Kanhan Branch of Pench project, Maharashtra, India. In the present work, two case studies with their networks of two different sizes are designed using the Critical Path Method (CPM). The pipe diameters thus obtained in CPM are optimized using two optimization techniques, viz. Linear Programming (LP) and recently developed Jaya Algorithm (JA). JA is a relatively new optimization technique requiring minimum input parameters and are selected based on sensitivity analysis. The comparison of the results using LP and JA exhibits significant reduction in cost of IPDN using newly developed JA. The scope of reduction in the total cost using JA increases with increase in the network area.

The conventional power distribution network is being transformed drastically due to high penetration of renewable energy sources (RES) and energy storage. The optimal scheduling and dispatch is important to better harness the energy from intermittent RES. Traditional centralized optimization techniques limit the size of the problem and hence distributed techniques are adopted. The distributed optimization technique partitions the power distribution network into sub-networks which solves the local sub problem and exchanges information with the neighboring sub-networks for the global update. This paper presents an adaptive spectral graph partitioning algorithm based on vertex migration while maintaining computational load balanced for synchronization, active power balance and sub-network resiliency. The parameters that define the resiliency metrics of power distribution networks are discussed and leveraged for better operation of sub-networks in grid connected mode as well as islanded mode. The adaptive partition of the IEEE 123-bus network into resilient sub-networks is demonstrated in this paper.

With the increase of renewable energy in electricity generation and increased engagement from demand sides, distribution network planning and operation face great challenges in the provision of stable, secure and dedicated service under a high level of uncertainty in network behaviors. Distribution network planning and operation, at the same time, also benefit from the changes of current and future distribution networks in terms of the availability of increased resources, diversity, smartness, controllability and flexibility of the distribution networks. This paper reviews the critical optimization problems faced by distribution planning and operation, including how to cope with these changes, how to integrate an optimization process in a problem-solving framework to efficiently search for optimal strategy and how to optimize sources and flexibilities properly in order to achieve cost-effective operation and provide quality of services as required, among other factors. This paper also discusses the approaches to reduce the heavy computation load when solving large-scale network optimization problems, for instance by integrating the prior knowledge of network configuration in optimization search space. A number of optimization techniques have been reviewed and discussed in the paper. This paper also discusses the changes, challenges and opportunities in future distribution networks, analyzes the possible problems that will be faced by future network planning and operations and discusses the potential strategies to solve these optimization problems.

The optimal location of renewable distributed generations (DGs) into a radial distribution system (RDS) has attracted major concerns from power system researchers in the present years. The main target of DG integration is to improve the overall system performance by minimizing power losses and improving the voltage profile. Hence, this paper proposed a hybrid approach between an analytical and metaheuristic optimization technique for the optimal allocation of DG in RDS, considering different types of load. A simple analytical technique was developed in order to determine the sizes of different and multiple DGs, and a new efficient metaheuristic technique known as the Salp Swarm Algorithm (SSA) was suggested in order to choose the best buses in the system, proportionate to the sizes determined by the analytical technique, in order to obtain the minimum losses and the best voltage profile. To verify the power of the proposed hybrid technique on the incorporation of the DGs in RDS, it was applied to different types of static loads; constant power (CP), constant impedance (CZ), and constant current (CI). The performance of the proposed algorithm was validated using two standards RDSs—IEEE 33-bus and IEEE 69-bus systems—and was compared with other optimization techniques.

The objective of the present paper is to study the optimum installation of Non-dispatchable Distributed Generations (NDG) in the distribution network of given sizes under the given scheme. The uncertainty of various random (uncertain) parameters like load, wind and solar operated DG besides uncertainty of fuel prices has been investigated by the three-point estimate method (3-PEM) and Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) based methods. Nearly twenty percent of the total number of buses are selected as candidate buses for NDG placement on the basis of system voltage profile to limit the search space. Weibull probability density function (PDF) is considered to address uncertain characteristics of solar radiation and wind speed under different scenarios. Load uncertainty is described by Standard Normal Distribution Function (SNDF). To investigate the solution of optimal probabilistic load flow (OPLF) three-point PEM-based technique was applied. For optimization, Genetic Algorithm (GA), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and GA-PSO hybrid-based Artificial Intelligent (AI) based optimization techniques are employed to achieve the optimum value of the multi-objectives function. The proposed multi-objective function comprises loss and different costs. The proposed methods have been applied to IEEE 33- bus radial distribution network. Simulation results obtained by these techniques are compared based on loss minimization capability, enhancement of system bus voltage profile and reduction of cost and fitness functions. The major findings of the present study are the PEM-based method which provides almost similar results as MCS based method with less computation time and as far as loss minimization capacity, voltage profile improvement etc. is concerned, the hybrid-based optimization methods are compared with GA and PSO based optimization techniques.

The paper presents use case simulations of fleets of electric buses in two cities in Europe, one with a warm Mediterranean climate and the other with a Northern European (cool temperate) climate, to compare the different climatic effects of the thermal management strategy and charging management strategy. Two bus routes are selected in each city, and the effects of their speed, elevation, and passenger profiles on the energy and thermal management strategy of vehicles are evaluated. A multi-objective optimization technique, the improved Simple Optimization technique, and a “brute-force” Monte Carlo technique were employed to determine the optimal number of chargers and charging power to minimize the total cost of operation of the fleet and the impact on the grid, while ensuring that all the buses in the fleet are able to realize their trips throughout the day and keeping the battery SoC within the constraints designated by the manufacturer. A mix of four different types of buses with different battery capacities and electric motor specifications constitute the bus fleet, and the effects that they have on charging priority are evaluated. Finally, different energy management strategies, including economy (ECO) features, such as ECO-comfort, ECO-driving, and ECO-charging, and their effects on the overall optimization are investigated. The single bus results indicate that 12 m buses have a significant battery capacity, allowing for multiple trips within their designated routes, while 18 m buses only have the battery capacity to allow for one or two trips. The fleet results for Barcelona city indicate an energy requirement of 4.42 GWh per year for a fleet of 36 buses, while for Gothenburg, the energy requirement is 5 GWh per year for a fleet of 20 buses. The higher energy requirement in Gothenburg can be attributed to the higher average velocities of the bus routes in Gothenburg, compared to those of the bus routes in Barcelona city. However, applying ECO-features can reduce the energy consumption by 15% in Barcelona city and by 40% in Gothenburg. The significant reduction in Gothenburg is due to the more effective application of the ECO-driving and ECO-charging strategies. The application of ECO-charging also reduces the average grid load by more than 10%, while shifting the charging towards non-peak hours. Finally, the optimization process results in a reduction of the total fleet energy consumption of up to 30% in Barcelona city, while in Gothenburg, the total cost of ownership of the fleet is reduced by 9%.

The energy storage system (ESS) is developing into a very important element for the stable operation of power systems. An ESS is characterized by rapid control, free charging, and discharging. Because of these characteristics, it can efficiently respond to sudden events that affect the power system and can help to resolve congested lines caused by the excessive output of distributed generators (DGs) using renewable energy sources (RESs). In order to efficiently and economically install new ESSs in the power system, the following two factors must be considered: the optimal installation placements and the optimal sizes of ESSs. Many studies have explored the optimal installation placement and the sizing of ESSs by using analytical approaches, mathematical optimization techniques, and artificial intelligence. This paper presents an algorithm to determine the optimal installation placement and sizing of ESSs for a virtual multi-slack (VMS) operation based on a power sensitivity analysis in a stand-alone microgrid. Through the proposed algorithm, the optimal installation placement can be determined by a simple calculation based on a power sensitivity matrix, and the optimal sizing of the ESS for the determined placement can be obtained at the same time. The algorithm is verified through several case studies in a stand-alone microgrid based on practical power system data. The results of the proposed algorithm show that installing ESSs in the optimal placement could improve the voltage stability of the microgrid. The sizing of the newly installed ESS was also properly determined.

Few non-traditional optimization techniques are applied to the dynamic economic dispatch (DED) of large-scale thermal power units (TPUs), e.g., 1000 TPUs, that consider the effects of valve-point loading with ramp-rate limitations. This is a complicated multiple mode problem. In this investigation, a novel optimization technique, namely, a multi-gradient particle swarm optimization (MG-PSO) algorithm with two stages for exploring and exploiting the search space area, is employed as an optimization tool. The M particles (explorers) in the first stage are used to explore new neighborhoods, whereas the M particles (exploiters) in the second stage are used to exploit the best neighborhood. The M particles’ negative gradient variation in both stages causes the equilibrium between the global and local search space capabilities. This algorithm’s authentication is demonstrated on five medium-scale to very large-scale power systems. The MG-PSO algorithm effectively reduces the difficulty of handling the large-scale DED problem, and simulation results confirm this algorithm’s suitability for such a complicated multi-objective problem at varying fitness performance measures and consistency. This algorithm is also applied to estimate the required generation in 24 h to meet load demand changes. This investigation provides useful technical references for economic dispatch operators to update their power system programs in order to achieve economic benefits.

Object detection models are usually trained and evaluated on highly complicated, challenging academic datasets, which results in deep networks requiring lots of computations. However, a lot of operational use-cases consist of more constrained situations: they have a limited number of classes to be detected, less intra-class variance, less lighting and background variance, constrained or even fixed camera viewpoints, etc. In these cases, we hypothesize that smaller networks could be used without deteriorating the accuracy. However, there are multiple reasons why this does not happen in practice. Firstly, overparameterized networks tend to learn better, and secondly, transfer learning is usually used to reduce the necessary amount of training data. In this paper, we investigate how much we can reduce the computational complexity of a standard object detection network in such constrained object detection problems. As a case study, we focus on a well-known single-shot object detector, YoloV2, and combine three different techniques to reduce the computational complexity of the model without reducing its accuracy on our target dataset. To investigate the influence of the problem complexity, we compare two datasets: a prototypical academic (Pascal VOC) and a real-life operational (LWIR person detection) dataset. The three optimization steps we exploited are: swapping all the convolutions for depth-wise separable convolutions, perform pruning and use weight quantization. The results of our case study indeed substantiate our hypothesis that the more constrained a problem is, the more the network can be optimized. On the constrained operational dataset, combining these optimization techniques allowed us to reduce the computational complexity with a factor of 349, as compared to only a factor 9.8 on the academic dataset. When running a benchmark on an Nvidia Jetson AGX Xavier, our fastest model runs more than 15 times faster than the original YoloV2 model, whilst increasing the accuracy by 5% Average Precision (AP).

In recent years, the integration of distributed generators (DGs) in radial distribution systems (RDS) has received considerable attention in power system research. The major purpose of DG integration is to decrease the power losses and improve the voltage profiles that directly lead to improving the overall efficiency of the power system. Therefore, this paper proposes a hybrid optimization technique based on analytical and metaheuristic algorithms for optimal DG allocation in RDS. In the proposed technique, the loss sensitivity factor (LSF) is utilized to reduce the search space of the DG locations, while the analytical technique is used to calculate initial DG sizes based on a mathematical formulation. Then, a metaheuristic sine cosine algorithm (SCA) is applied to identify the optimal DG allocation based on the LSF and analytical techniques instead of using random initialization. To prove the superiority and high performance of the proposed hybrid technique, two standard RDSs, IEEE 33-bus and 69-bus, are considered. Additionally, a comparison between the proposed techniques, standard SCA, and other existing optimization techniques is carried out. The main findings confirmed the enhancement in the convergence of the proposed technique compared with the standard SCA and the ability to allocate multiple DGs in RDS.
