Sedimentation in the Reservoir of the Altenwoerth Hydropower Plant

This paper addresses two objectives. The first objective is to describe the sedimentation process in the reservoir of the hydropower scheme Altenwoerth. It is located on the Austrian part of the Danube about 60 km upstream from Vienna. Starting in 1976 the aggradation of the river bed has been monitored annually to estimate the sedimentation rate along a longitudinal section in the reservoir. Further, cores were taken over the whole sediment layer to analyse the grain size distribution, the bulk density, the mineralogic structure of the sediment and the heavy metal concentrations in the layer. It was found that the annual average sedimentation of suspended material amounts to 390 000 m3/a. The grain size of the samples vary from well sorted sands to poorly sorted, clay rich sediments. The heavy metal concentrations refer to the fraction less than 20 µ m. In comparison to the guidelines for sewage sludge disposal the observed heavy metal content of zn and Pb is slightly above the respective limits. The second objective is to demonstrate the application of a one dimensional sedimentation model which describes the accumulation over the operation period from 1976 to 1985. The model is related to the unit stream power concept and is based on the transport capacity equation of Engelund and Hansen. The model yields satisfying results for both the quantity of the sediment and also its gradation.

Kegiatan industri di Perairan Muara Sungai Tiram, Marunda, Jakarta Utara, akan berdampak terhadap konsentrasi logam berat di Perairan. Sedimen merupakan tempat akumulasinya logam tersebut dan pada suatu saat akan dapat menjadi sumber bagi kolom perairan diatasnya. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui konsentrasi logam berat pada sedimen dasar dan mengetahui korelasinya terhadap ukuran butir serta dan bahan organik. Analisa logam berat diawali dengan proses destruksi menggunakan aquaregia dan supernatannya di baca nilai absorbasninya menggunakan Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). Untuk melihat hubungan parameter logam berat terhadap ukuran butir dan bahan organik, menngunakan analisis korelasi Pearson. Berdasarkan penelitian tersebut diperoleh nilai konsentrasi logam berat dengan kisaran 20,19–55,68 ppm. Konsentrasi logam berat memiliki korelasi positif terhadap fraksi silt dan clay.  Distribusi logam berat di lokasi penelitian berasosiasi kuat terhadap fraksi ukuran butir halus dan bahan organik, melalui proses adsorpsi. The waters of the Muara Sungai Tiram, Marunda, North Jakarta, are areas that are surrounded by very dense industrial activities. The existence of these activities has an impact on the concentration of heavy metals in basic sediments in these waters. The purpose of this study was to determine the concentration of heavy metals in basic sediments and determine the correlation between the concentration of heavy metals with grain size on the base sediment in the liquid and the correlation between the concentration of heavy metals with organic matter. Analysis of heavy metal concentrations was carried out using the acid destruction method, then the concentration was read using the Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS), and processed into a heavy metal concentration map using Arcgis 10.3. Based on these studies the value of heavy metal concentrations obtained in the range of 20.19 - 55.681 ppm. Heavy metal concentrations have a positive correlation with the mud and organic matter fractions with r values of 0.68 and 0.10, respectively. The distribution of heavy metals in this study is strongly associated with the fine grain size fraction and organic matter, through the adsorption process

Detailed geochemical analyses were performed on the recent sedimentary cover (0 – 15 cm) of the northern flank of the Gulf of Corinth, in western Greece. Man-made metalliferous deposits have been formed on the sea-bed of the Gulf due to the discharge of red mud tailings on the shelf of the Antikyra Bay. The metalliferous deposits have been incorporated in the sedimentation regime of the area. A large grid of sediment samples collected from surface and subsurface red mud deposits and the surrounding natural sediments were analysed for Ag, Al, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Si, Ti, V, and Zn concentrations, using Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS). Also, Total Organic Carbon and Calcium Carbonateswere determined. Additionally, correlation between heavy metal concentrations and grain-size data was examined. High heavy metal content values were measured on the floor of the Corinth basin, but the highest heavy metal concentrations occur near the discharge site. In subsurface sediments the heavy metal content (Fe, Ni, Cr, Pb, V, Ag, Co, Al, Cd, Ti, Hg) is significantly higher in the red and reddish mud sediments than in the natural mud sediments. The heavy metal content values decrease from top to base within red-mud deposits. Multivariate statistical methods (Cluster and Facto analysis) were applied on the heavy metal composition and grain-size dataset in order to investigate the inter-element relationships as well as the relationships between the geochemical and sedimentological data.
