Introduction: Today, the appreciation of aesthetic dentistry by society brought to the search for materials and techniques that improve the appearance of smile, which is essential in maintaining physical and mental health of the patient. Objective: This study aimed to report a case of gummy smile involving Periodontics and Restorative Dentistry. Case report: This case, despite other possible alternatives, was solved through periodontal surgery (clinical crown augmentation associated with osteotomy) and indirect restorations with porcelain crowns. Conclusion: In our experience this procedure is safe, predictable, with minimal risks or side effects, and it is a treatment option for these cases.

There is an increase in the number of dentists using orthodontic treatment for anterior tooth alignment. This is either combined with additive bonding or interproximal reduction; knowing “when to” and “how much” requires an understanding of the anterior ratio. This case report explains how to use the anterior ratio to help provide optimal aesthetics and function for the ortho-restorative patient. The anterior ratio is an important diagnostic tool required for both disciplines of orthodontics and restorative dentistry which is often overlooked. The case report demonstrates the use of the Invisalign orthodontic appliance and the corresponding ClinCheck software to help achieve the proposed treatment goals.

Movement is one of the four cornerstones of care (alongside hygiene and skin care, compression therapy and lymphatic massage), but patients often find it difficult to incorporate activity/exercise in their care regimen. Finding activity that the patient is comfortable building into their routine is vital and can have a positive effect on their physical and mental health. If the movement links into a patient's hobby, it does not feel like exercise and the benefits increase further. This article describes a case in which the author, a community lymphoedema therapist, encouraged and helped a man with lymphoedema find ways in which to incorporate exercise in his care regimen. This case was quite complex, and the patient had many comorbidites that limited his mobility. Using clear explanations and small, achievable and fun goals improved compliance and, therefore, patient outcomes.

ABSTRACTBleaching of discolored teeth is one of the most important topics in aesthetic dentistry. A great challenge in this area is obtaining good results in tetracycline-stained teeth. The wavelength and features of KTP laser, which is a type of Nd:YAG laser, seem to be appropriate for bleaching of these teeth. This case report underlines the importance of knowledge about the photochemical bleaching by using the KTP laser and its side effects on soft tissues. (Eur J Dent 2009;3:229-232)

Altered passive eruption/gummy smile is a common challenge in patients requiring aesthetic treatment. A specific surgical protocol was designed and tested in patients with altered passive eruption. Standardized preoperative X-rays were used to assess crown length at baseline and to place submarginal incisions. Osseous respective therapy was performed to achieve biological width. Clinical outcomes were recorded 6 months after surgery. Eleven patients with a total of 58 teeth were treated with flap surgery and osseous resective therapy at upper anterior natural teeth. At the last followup, a significant and stable improvement of crown length was obtained when compared to the baseline (P<0.0001). All patients rated as satisfactory in the final outcomes (final VAS value = 86.6). In conclusion, this study showed that periodontal plastic surgery including osseous resection leads to predictable outcomes in the treatment of altered passive eruption/gummy smile: A careful preoperative planning avoids unpleasant complications and enhances postsurgical stability of the gingival margin.

The novel coronavirus has had an impact on our physical and mental health, as well as enforcing dramatic changes to our daily lives. On top of this, it has become more difficult for people to find outlets to release stress because of limited outdoor and indoor activities. In these circumstances, some people begin to feel depressed and/or anxious. This article reports a case of panic attacks and anxiety caused by the stress experienced due to the pandemic.
