Recent Research Trends on Bismuth Compounds in Cancer Chemoand Radiotherapy

Background:Application of coordination chemistry in nanotechnology is a rapidly developing research field in medicine. Bismuth complexes have been widely used in biomedicine with satisfactory therapeutic effects, mostly in Helicobacter pylori eradication, but also as potential antimicrobial and anti-leishmanial agents. Additionally, in recent years, application of bismuth-based compounds as potent anticancer drugs has been studied extensively.Methods:Search for data connected with recent trends on bismuth compounds in cancer chemo- and radiotherapy was carried out using web-based literature searching tools such as ScienceDirect, Springer, Royal Society of Chemistry, American Chemical Society and Wiley. Pertinent literature is covered up to 2016.Results:In this review, based on 213 papers, we highlighted a number of current problems connected with: (i) characterization of bismuth complexes with selected thiosemicarbazone, hydrazone, and dithiocarbamate classes of ligands as potential chemotherapeutics. Literature results derived from 50 papers show that almost all bismuth compounds inhibit growth and proliferation of breast, colon, ovarian, lung, and other tumours; (ii) pioneering research on application of bismuth-based nanoparticles and nanodots for radiosensitization. Results show great promise for improvement in therapeutic efficacy of ionizing radiation in advanced radiotherapy (described in 36 papers); and (iii) research challenges in using bismuth radionuclides in targeted radioimmunotherapy, connected with choice of adequate radionuclide, targeting vector, proper bifunctional ligand and problems with 213Bi recoil daughters toxicity (derived from 92 papers).Conclusion:This review presents recent research trends on bismuth compounds in cancer chemo- and radiotherapy, suggesting directions for future research.

Background: C-H activation has attracted great interests over the past two decades, which resulted in an explosive growth in both quality and quantity of published papers related to this topic. Objective: In this review, a bibliometric analysis was performed to evaluate the publications in this field from 1996 to 2015 based on the Science Citation Index (SCI) Expanded database. This work presented a detailed overview of C-H activation from aspects of types of articles, citations, h-indices, languages, years, journals, institutions, countries and author keywords. Conclusion: The results showed that the USA took the leading position in this research field, followed by P. R. China and German. Chinese Academy of Science had the most publications and the highest h-index, Scripps Research Institute won the first place as far as the highest average citation per paper is concerned. Organometallics, Angewandte Chemie International Edition and Journal of the American Chemical Society were the most productive journals in this field, and Chemistry was the most frequently used subject category. Keywords analysis indicated that most research focused on the Palladium, Rhodium and Copper catalyzed cross-coupling synthetic method development for the heterocycle synthesis. The research about exploring the asymmetric C-H functionalization, mechanism investigation and solving the regioselectivity issue is the development trend in this area.

Purpose Knowledge and its management and, more recently, strategic knowledge management (SKM) represent major challenges for the organisations of the 21st century. Despite the importance of this knowledge field, and the significant quantity of research that has focussed on this theme, there is a dearth of studies in the literature undertaking a systematic SKM review. This study aims to provide a currently complete and systematic SKM review to stimulate and contribute to furthering this academic field and correspondingly set out an agenda for future research. Design/methodology/approach This paper sourced the data from the science citation index expanded (SCI-expanded), the social sciences citation index (SSCI) and the arts and humanities citation index (A&H CI) databases. This research spanned references published in journals belonging to the categories of management, business and economics without any chronological filter. The search returned a total of 99 references with their dates of publication between 1995 (1 reference) and 2018 (7 references). Findings The results included the identification of three core approaches to this study field: SKM models and competitive advantage, SKM implementation and the Systematic SKM approach. Practical implications This current study seeks to undertake the mapping of the scientific publications, the intellectual structure and research trends in the SKM field to: identify the fundamental contributions to the SKM research field; determine the research pathways establishing its intellectual structure and the scientific journals with the greatest impact on the field and identify the SKM research field geographical distribution and its collaborative structure. Originality/value This study defines a roadmap for an informed research agenda that proposes multiple directions: the usage and development of an innovative theory that may open new paths for future research and theoretical construction; a more sophisticated understanding of the concept and its applicability; approaching the shortcomings interrelated with the content across different levels of analysis; and the application of relevant and appropriate methodologies for operationalizing SKM.

Evidence is presented that the polysaccharide rhamnogalacturonan I (RGI) can be biosynthesized in remarkably organized branched configurations and surprisingly long versions and can self-assemble into a plethora of structures. AFM imaging has been applied to study the outer mucilage obtained from wild-type (WT) and mutant (bxl1-3 and cesa5-1) Arabidopsis thaliana seeds. For WT mucilage, ordered, multichain structures of the polysaccharide RGI were observed, with a helical twist visible in favorable circumstances. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations demonstrated the stability of several possible multichain complexes and the possibility of twisted fibril formation. For bxl1-3 seeds, the imaged polymers clearly showed the presence of side chains. These were surprisingly regular and well organized with an average length of ∼100 nm and a spacing of ∼50 nm. The heights of the side chains imaged were suggestive of single polysaccharide chains, while the backbone was on average 4 times this height and showed regular height variations along its length consistent with models of multichain fibrils examined in MD. Finally, in mucilage extracts from cesa5-1 seeds, a minor population of chains in excess of 30 μm long was observed.
